Title: Tony Hawk: Sk8land
Post by: joeposh on November 07, 2005, 09:17:23 PM
I can't believe there isn't a topic for this yet... I've been interested in this game ever since I heard that they were trying to go in a different direction for the DS version. To me this indicated a genuine interest in the DS and dedication on the part of the development team to make this game stand out. The GBA incarnations were always of the highest quality, so I had no reason to expect less from the DS incarnation. The new art style, smooth frame rate and full 3-D engine had me pretty much sold, and then they came along and threw in Wi-Fi support to absolutely seal the deal.

In my eyes the online features of this game may easily top Mario Kart. Customizable boards, uploadable replays, "skate crews", custom icons, and perhaps the coolest feature of all downloadable content such as new level objectives and missions that Vicarious Visions claims will be released regularly and free of charge. All of this in addition to standard 2 player online competition and an already lush variety of options in the offline game (skate park editor on a handheld? Sweet...). Looks like a great game and it definately deserves to get more hype around here.

After seeing the American Sk8land presentation, all I can say is that I'm floored.  I've played Tony Hawk games a little bit beforehand and while I do have respect for the series I've never really got into it.  However, right now the near future ain't looking like a bad time to give it another chance.  I will agree with you on this, I'm surprised I haven't seen any real discussion on this at all, especially given that this is the first third party DS Wi-Fi Connection game.

I'm picking this up with Mario Kart.  I love Tony Hawk games, I can't stop playing them once I start until I beat them.  I'm picking this up and I'm not going to get American Wasteland (the GCN game) until it drops in price.  My patience will save my wallet pain this time.

I highly recommend American Wasteland. I think it's leaps and bounds above THUG and THUG2. I'd go as far as to say it's the best game in the series...because it is.

That's a pretty ringing endorsement... but I can't bring myself to pay 50 bucks for a game that honestly doesn't look all that different from the past few incarnations and which I know will be 30-20  bucks within 6 months just like every other Tony Hawk game this gen. The DS incarnation differs in that regard because I can tell it actually has something substantially different to offer and it's online component has me wanting to play it from day 1.

I agree with joeposh on those accounts.  I will definately get American Wasteland, but I'm holding off until it's at least 30 bucks.  I'm fairly confident Sk8land won't be dropping in price for a while though and it's already going to be cheaper because it's a DS game.

i know.. i feel bad for activision (only because we need third party online games to excel on the DS; we can't just live off of online Nintendo titles)

-coming from a man who hasnt played MK on DS

I kind of expect the sales of this title to pick up significantly in january.  DS owners have to get over the hype of both MK and AC first.

I picked it up yesterday... thus far I've  enjoyed it immensely. The controls are smooth and responsive and the amount of modes and features are overwhelming. The online system is easy and more expansive than Mario Kart. You can actually download new objectives off wi-fi, which I think is a bad ass feature that adds a ton of replay value to the game. You can upload your stats and replays, or download others to compete against. I did one 1 on 1 high score battle and got rocked, but it was still fun. Haven't added any friends yet so I can't speak to how that works. I'll post again in more detail once I get more into the game, but if you have any questions let me know.

How are the controls? Also, how does it store new objectives that are downloaded? You'd think that they'd only be able to do so much adding to the game.

I haven't spent all that much time with the online objectives just yet but I don't believe it actually downloads them to your card. You can only play them when connected to the wi-fi network, so I think they're just saved in your ram and deleted when you disconnect. That way they can constantly add new objectives without eating up save space on the card.

No, you are 100% wrong on this.  ONE downloaded mission is stored at a time on the card.  Not just in RAM.  You can play said downloaded mission offline, on the plane, whatever. When you reconnect, it syncs up and reports to the server if you completed it, score, etc.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. I hadn't found a way to access those missions offline so I was assuming that's how it operated, hence the phrases "I think" and "I don't believe". How do you access them? Because it doesn't appear to show up in the normal story mode objectives.

Hey gang, just wanted to let you know that I have created a skate crew for PGC readers and staff on the Sk8Land website.  It's called "PGC Pietriots".  Please join if you have the game!

Hm, it's out here now, before Mario Kart. So the first online game Europeans can get for the DS is THASL...

Only problem, it's too expensive. Apparently the MSRP is 50 Euros. Fifty freaking Euros!
