Title: Nintendo Wi-Fi connections... in Wal-Mart?
Post by: UncleBob on October 05, 2005, 07:01:37 PM
I have a theory that I cannot wait to try out...
Every Wal-Mart (including the one I work at) that has a 1-Hour Photo Center has a high speed internet connection in them. I do not have a high speed internet connection at home.
So... I'm wondering... I know that the computers at work are locked down pretty tight as far as accessing off-network things - but I also know that they can access the internet (with some effort). I can't wait for the Wi-Fi Adapter to come out, I want to see if I pop this puppy in if I'll be able to get it to work...
These things cost, what, $20-$30 each? Could you imangine every Wal-Mart in the US having access to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection? Wouldn't that be sweet?

That would also make sense. Isn't Walmart NIntendo's biggest seller of hardware/software?

Could be cool (though playing in walmart might be a little annoying). Personally, I'd like to see them team up with some fast food restaurants like Taco Bell.

Well, yesterdays reports mention £30 which is roughly $53 US and ¥3500 which is about $31 US.
I'm guessing NOA would price it around $39.99

Not if every Walmart has a "Nintendo Zone" area.

Does the computer you are planning on using to do this have open free internet access... from my wal-mart working experience several years ago, that isn't the case. And if that isn't the case, it won't work.

A.) If you know what you're doing, yeah, you can get on the internet from the computers. B.) It seems to me that it'd be pretty easy for Home Office to tweak the restrictions for *every* Wal-Mart... Think about it, bring the kids in, leave them at the Snack Bar or the McDonald's (or Subway, or whatever your Wal-Mart has) and shop without your kids screaming and yelling the entire time...
>Could be cool (though playing in walmart might be a little annoying). Personally, I'd like to see them team up with some fast food restaurants like Taco Bell.
Taco Bell (or McDonald's or whomever) doesn't already have high speed Internet in the majority of their stores - which is why I picked Wal-Mart (plus I work there...)
>I'm guessing NOA would price it around $39.99 Still less than the price of, say, a GCN Demo unit or DS Demo unit... I don't think it'd be an unreasonable cost...

Actually, don't all McDonald's have free wireless internet? I was under the impression that they did...

I don't know (I hate McDonalds and never go there.) Schlotsky's does, though!

I actually just noticed that the one near me did today... I had never heard of that before, but it is a brand new McDonalds so that may have something to do with it.

All McDonalds and Schlotzky's restaurants, most airports and hotels, and several coffee shops have free WiFi, but I think for it to truly influence Nintendo, they should be advertised as DS Hotspots rather than generic WiFi hotspots.
EDIT: I know they're the same thing.

Correction: Not all McDonald's have WiFi, let alone *free* Wi-Fi. I've did some digging on this...
First: To find if a McD's near you has WiFi, check out http://www.mcdonalds.com/usa/rest_locator.html Type in your ZIP Code and Find all McDonald's near you - and look in the column to see if they support wireless.
Second: According to McD's website, only select stores have "free" Wi-Fi (either as a promotional thing or for stores in states affected by Katrina/Rita). Others, you have to pay (typically only $3/ 2 Hours)

Well actually we do have it, apparently every McD around my house has it. I should be happy, right? well actually I don't care.

If you have to pay for it, I assume that means you can't go on using the DS.

that wi-fi thing won't cost more than $25. I'm guessing it'll cost around $20.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to go to Walmart to play Mario Kart.
They're much better off with restaurants. I just hope they have the common sense to use more than one restaurant chain, because there isn't I am a tremendous clownboat. at McDonald's that a vegetarian can eat.

there was a mcdonalds where i used to live that had a game cube station set up and tehy advertised that you could play the latest games, but latter they took the ads down but I thinkn the sation is still there, so it could work for mcdonalds, truck stops tend to have free wi-fi also so that is a big help I honestly think nintenod has picked a real winner this time

It's funny that the articles that stevey reads are filled with blantant grammatical errors.

I think you mean 'flagrant.' Me wins.
Title: RE: Nintendo Wi-Fi connections... in Wal-Mart?
Post by: KDR_11k on October 11, 2005, 10:10:35 PM
Blatant emphasizes the failure to conceal the act. Flagrant, on the other hand, emphasizes the serious wrongdoing inherent in the offense. --http://www.answers.com/blatant

Blatant is sometimes used to mean simply “obvious,” as in the blatant danger of such an approach, but this use has not been established and is widely considered an error.
Exactly, KDR. Thanks for backing me up. :¬]

You all may continue arguing the differences between the words "flagrant" and "blatant," but the fact remains that he said "blantant." And that, my friends, is the coolest word ever.
Title: RE: Nintendo Wi-Fi connections... in Wal-Mart?

Renny: Interestingly, WordNet ® 2.0 defines it as "obvious". That's the 2003 version so apparently the meaning of the word has changed since 2000.
EDIT: That URL syntax isn't just illogical, it makes some things impossible.

I can't keep up with English anymore. Anyone know of a more stagnant language? I was thinking Inuit but that might require moving within the Arctic Circle.

you could try...... esperanto.
Quote Blatant is sometimes used to mean simply “obvious,” as in the blatant danger of such an approach, but this use has not been established and is widely considered an error.
eh....word meanings are dictated by how the tyranical majority uses them, and not by what scholars consider acceptable or erroneous.

Such erroneous language is unacceptable on these forums even by the most scholastic of its members.

From KKD's Link...
"IGN: Why will the Wi-Fi USB adapter only be available through Nintendo.com and not retailers?
Beth Llewlyn:The feeling initially was that a lot of people were either going to have a wireless router at home or would have the ability to go to a McDonald's and have access in a number of ways, so we decided to make it initially available on Nintendo.com and just see how it goes. "
Is this new? Did I miss something?

I... don't like it.
<Ian Rant Mode> Nintendo claims that they want to make it *easy* to go on-line with the DS and then they make us jump through hoops to get the USB adapter by ordering from their website? It'll probably turn into something like the GCN's Component Cables... No one will know how to get the USB adapter, so no one will order it, so Nintendo will just assume that no one wants on-line play and cancel all plans for the Revolution to be online... </Ian>

There goes that 90% number.
Title: RE: Nintendo Wi-Fi connections... in Wal-Mart?
Post by: UncleBob on October 17, 2005, 07:46:32 PM
Well, on the bright side, I figure a lot of DS owners will go to a McDonald's just to *try* the on-line set-up. Heck, even if/when I get high-speed internet and the USB adapter, I'll probably still go to a McDonald's - just to try the setup out....

"Beth Llewlyn: We'll certainly be promoting Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection very, very heavily, with the launch of Mario Kart DS coming up here on November 14. You're going to hearing about this everywhere, whether it's TV, print -- we'll be everywhere we can to promote the fact." Good.
"IGN: How would you play DS online at other establishments with hotspots, such as Starbucks?
Beth Llewlyn: Well, you can still use the DS anywhere there's a Wi-Fi connection. You just would have to set it up through a laptop and use the USB port adapter." Bad.
"Beth Llewlyn:The feeling initially was that a lot of people were either going to have a wireless router at home or would have the ability to go to a McDonald's and have access in a number of ways, so we decided to make it initially available on Nintendo.com and just see how it goes." Ugly.

wait, why would you need a laptop? that doesn't make sense with the other article, which said you could set it all up on the DS....
ah, except, some hot spots require a password via a website (not just a login type password) and that would be an issue.
but those places suck anyway.
