Title: Revolution and Bluetooth
Post by: Plugabugz on September 17, 2005, 04:29:53 AM
It's been confirmed that the Revolution controller will be using Bluetooth Technology to communicate. With that in mind it'll be at least 10 metres, which should be more than enough for most people.
By using Bluetooth it allows for cross-platform communication. That said, Bluetooth don't have TCP/IP built in, so this isn't the basis of "USB Wifi Device" for PC/Rev connectivity.
PC's and Laptops are being kitted out with bluetooth built in, imagine the possibilities involved?

bluetooth is dodgy technology... well thats what my view is basied on bluetooth used in mobile phones
"PC's and Laptops are being kitted out with bluetooth built in, imagine the possibilities involved?" ummm no? There pushing wifi alot in australia now Most laptops buyers are being pushed into buying a wifi card at the same time (due to these new wifi dvd set's, that allow wifi streaming video) My view is bluetooth is more of a gimmick for laptops, much like those old sim card readers, If there a Business man, they would proberly use a PDA with usb anyway.

It says bluetooth just for the positioning devices.
I always wondered why some folks were gung-ho for add-ons to use USB, bluetooth, firewire, etc. Without software and driver support made for Revolution, those accessories don't mean much regardless of the port.
Edit: It is possible he omitted details, though.

I wouldn't say Bluetooth is a gimmick for laptops - I transfer a lot of stuff from my PC to my phone, and while USB cables is more stable, it's ultimately more of a pain to receive a phone call (for example) while the PC is sending data.
Wireless is being pushed quite heavily here in London, so much to the point where they are springing up all over the place (often for free), and Bluetooth is being used as an advertising platform on the Underground network. Even though, as Jim says, it's just for the positioning devices, if Bluetooth was enabled for broader use, it could (for example) form the basis of a "Nintendo Hunt" where clues are left in games and at the location specified data is sent via Bluetooth to your phone/device and then possibly sent "back" to the game to unlock things.
That is an incredibly exaggerated idea, and I'd expect either Bill or Ian to shoot it down, but Bluetooth IMO can allow Nintendo to take the game from beyond the TV screen, and potentially give for more devices for the Rev to interact with.

I didn't get the Bluetooth connectivity part from the TGS coverage. If what your saying is true...could this mean a Bluetooth headset to interact with other gamers while on-line...or is that just too much technology for Nintendo to allow their new console. As history would illustrate with the cartridge format of the N64 vs. CD and the GCN optical discs vs. DVD, Nintendo doesn't want to go the extra mile only to implement in their next generation what the competition offers in the existing generation. Therefore, is a bluetooth headset too much for Nintendo?...or am I completely off topic?
By the way, don't be afraid of Ian to shoot down your enthusiasm...this forum needs his view to keep us from getting our hopes up...even if it means we hate Adam West from now until the end of time.

As was mentioned in the linked interview, bluetooth is only for the controller positioning device... At least as far as we know. Now that I think about it, it's possible that he deliberately omitted more details.
If bluetooth is already incorporated, then additional accessories wouldn't be difficult, expensive, or out of the question.
But I think it'd make more sense to connect everything to the remote controller rather than have a bunch of independent bluetooth devices. The system might only be able to detect 4 different channels. So using the controller as the bridge seems to be the logical (cheaper) thing to do.

hang on.. my buddy owns a local console gaming center (7 60'' HDTVs, 7 32" HDTVs;T1 connection; futon for every gamer on the main Tvs; etc) ... do you think this next gen of wireless controllers are going to interfere with other sets? as in.. if you are doing a lan party at your house, do you think these REVote Controllers are going to interfere with teh other consoles (there are only 4 leds on the controller, and I couldn't see a frequency thing anywhere.
I was hoping for some wicked 16+ player deathmatches within the gaming center, but I fear that using tooo many remotes is out of the picture

I can garuantee you that 16 player LAN will be possible.
Nintendo knows the REV is very portable. They also know that people will likely take their REV to another house if needed. Having your LAN party fail due to the fact that Nintendo forgot to think through their wireless controller idea is, well.....ridiculous.
It's like asking if there will be only one or so REV consoles to play with at E3 06 because the controllers interfere with one anothers signals.

"I can garuantee you that 16 player LAN will be possible" the control has 4 channels, check the bottom of it (4 little led's, with only one being lit up) how can you play 16players without the signals being mixed up?

Bluetooth on a console. Think of the possibilities!! We could use BT headsets for an Xbox-live-esque gaming experience. Be able to talk to each other over a network!

The console can connect to 4 controllers (as far as we know). That doesn't mean it has only 4 channels to operate on. Check your WaveBird.

Okay, who said each light is a channel? Maybe it's just a representation of player number and the channel switching goes on behind the scenes.
I mean, I don't see any buttons to change channel.

Yeah the wavebird had a ton of channels. I don't think this will be a problem.

Frankly, I doubt that it uses Bluetooth. People - Even major executives - tend to mix up the terms RF, Wifi, and Bluetooth. I think it would make more sense if Revolution used, perhaps, some type of RFID mechanism...

I think the light is battery power or some hidden revolutionary idea nintendo dosen't want to be copy.
