Title: Mario Sports?
Post by: raptorspike on July 04, 2005, 10:10:02 AM
Does anyone else have any ideas for future sports that mario and his crew can play. We already have:
Golf
Tennis
Baseball
Soccer

I would personally like to see:
Basketball (NBA Street V3 doesn't count, something like 'Mario Super Hoops'),
Hockey (Mario Ice Battle),
Wresting (Mario Power Slam) Bowser doing a moonsault sounds like a riot.

So what you think?

I have said it before, these Mario games are great, and I love them because they are fun. However, I don't like the fact that Mario is featured in them. I know that it is this that gets sales, but at what cost? They could easily make the games with different characters, and they would be just as good. So no, I don't want to see Mario in another sport for a while.

I love the Mario sports games, but no. They need to slow down, there shouldn't be more than one Mario Sports game being released in a given year, ever.

They should start looking for other ways to make sports games, although nothing too out there (Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, should never even be considered). A Earthbound Baseball title wouldn't have been too bad IMO, but Mario already has that one anyway.

Are there enough characters in Earthbound to do that?

I remember a Warioware FAQ where they commented Curling with "believe it or not, that's an actual olympic sport".

Yeah, but it's still entertaining.

And thinking about it, I'd really like to see Mario suplex Wario off the turnbuckle.

And we could finally settle the eternal question: Mario or Luigi?

I'm a big wrestling fan but I fear that Mario Wrestling would compromise too much for the setting.  It's like how Def Jam Vendetta had good gameplay but as a wrestling game sucked balls because of stupid restrictions as a result of the licence.  Ditto Ultimate Muscle.  Since I haven't had a good 3D wrestling game since the N64 I would rather Nintendo spend the effort on something more traditional.  I'd rather have an amazing wrestling game with made up characters and a robust engine and create-a-wrestler mode than a gimmicky, pretty good Mario wrestling game that has to compromise on wrestling elements (ie: blood, CAW, anything signifcantly violent) to fit the franchise.

Other than that I think volleyball and hockey could be fun.

But I'm REALLY sick of Mario spinoffs.  Mario just isn't special anymore.  Nintendo announces new Mario games and my response is "so what".  It's just played out and Mario needs to take a break so that next time they make a new platformer or kart game it's a big deal and not just the fourth Mario game release that year.

I think Nintendo should dedicate the effort they put towards Mario sports to regular sports games.  Nintendo has a bad reputation for rehashing and have traditionally been weak regarding sports.  By making sports games without Mario they kill two birds with one stone.  They have a sports lineup and Mario isn't as overexposed.  I'm not saying they should make sports sims.  The resulting games could still be very arcadey.  But by not having Mario they can freshen these games up a fair bit.  Plus they could get a new franchise out of it which could connect with gamers who are not into Mario.  Anyone who didn't buy a Cube for Mario will NOT buy a Rev for Mario but those same people could buy a Rev for a brand new sports lineup.

I agree on overdoing Mario spin-offs.

One idea I have is for Nintendo to expand the Wave Race / 1080 series into an entire sports series.  It would give the games a little bit of instant recognition, and like Ian was suggesting, it could offset Nintendo's poor reputation in the sports arena.

But if Nintendo is going to make more Mario sports anyway, I just want to see Hockey!  It's just about the only sport I care about.

Well, it'll be interesting to see how Pennant Chase turns out, since it'll be the first Nintendo sports sim in a while.  Of course they'll be putting in their own special charm, so we'll have to wait and see if Nintendo will be able to create more sports games like that.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean.  I figured you meant 1080-esque, but I got confused around the "instant recognition" stuff.  You can't really take the name and apply it to other sports, and the characters aren't really well known either.  I'm confused.

Besides, you can't expand 1080-esque games into other genres because in most other sports you're playing as a team.  Those are both games where you play as a single character- same with kart racing, tennis, and golf.  Mario Baseball and Strikers will also be interesting to observe- the team aspect is much harder to pull off.  It's kind of hard to explain, but it'd be tough to take that same unique charm 1080 and WR have and expand it into a team sport.  It wouldn't have the same feel. Think about it, it'd be weird >_>

Personally, I'm not sick of Mario spinoffs yet because they've all been very fun, but I think that they should stop now.  I'm looking forward to Mario Baseball and especially Strikers with a tremendous (and unusual) amount of anticipation.  In my opinion, Mario Kart, Tennis, and Golf are the best games of those sports, ever, because they manage to make boring sports games FUN.  I doubt Baseball and Strikers will disappoint, but I think it should stop after that.  The only place it could go after that is hockey, which I think would be pretty bad (how much variation can you have when every arena has to be on ice?)

If nintendo wanna win next gen in australia they need a online mario cricket!

I like the mario sports games, tennis and golf are awsome games.
Im not that interested in baseball since its pretty much only popular in USA and japan, and I dont live in one of those countrys.
I wouldnt mind if nintendo started a sports range and made bi-years updates....

Wave Race was too basic for its own good, Its a great game but you can play it for 20mins and you feel like you have done everything the game has offered.

Let's see, Nintendo has tried every major North American sport save hockey and football. And I agree with the majority of you, I enjoyed them more than the sims. This is mainly because I watch those sports, but I don't really care for them. Foootball, basketball, baseball? Nah, I just don't really love those sports. So the Mario series were more enjoyable for me.

However, I love hockey, and I wish  Nintendo would try a hockey game, either sim or arcade. I don't think it would turn out well at all though, since they don't have prior experience.

I'm intrigued to see how Strikers will turn out, since soccer is something I'm interested in as well. Something that I would really like to see is a Nintendo cricket or squash game.  This will almost certainly not happen, but I can dream, right? The cricket games are reserved for the cricket markets i.e New Zealand, Australia, England, so I haven't played a console one, but I have played the PC Brian Lara series. And I don't think a squash game has ever been made, so I'm not holding my breath.

I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you, but Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball delayed indefinitely.

I knew about that, but it was mentioned in a Reggie interview so.....perhaps the interview wasn't recent, or perhaps they were talking about it despite the fact that it may not even come out on the Gamecube.  It did allude to the fact that it was delayed, I guess I misunderstood.  Whatever, I'm excited about Mario Baseball

its a sport because each person has to have athletic ability to do any of their moves.  and ya its fake so what, it still doesn't take away from what the men/women are able to do day in and day out.

seeing that most soccer games can be played with 2 buttons (pass, shoot) i cant see how you could suck at them

I seriously hope some of Miyamoto's new franchises for Rev turn into Mario-type successes...not that I want them in random spin-off games like Mario, just I'm sick of seeing the guy.  Note how in the past 9 years, we've gotten 2 real platforming Mario games (console), but some 25-30 Mario games.  7 of which are random party-games which should have been stopped after the second. -_-

Though I must admit, after seeing Gamespot's Mario Baseball demo, Namco has made one hell of a baseball game.

EDIT: Someone imagine Pikmin Wrestling for a second.  Just not when you're deep in conversation with someone, they'll find you odd when you're laughing to yourself in the middle of a conversation.

The purples would pwn the others, like the DS and the PSP.
