Title: Making WW has future benefits
Post by: ThePerm on June 19, 2005, 09:30:04 PM
Alot of people were shocked by the switch from the realistic style to the cartoon style with Windwaker...however...it was the largest scale cell shaded game ever created...and chances are there is going to be some badass anime looking game coming out for revolution

The games I want to see in cel shading are Fzero, Castlevania if it is made full 3d (if its 2d then I want uber real prerendered cinematic backgrounds), Zelda (looking more like Princess Mononoke than WW), Mario Bros, Kid Iccarus, Megaman, and Street Fighter.

I could handle Metroid in cel shading, but it would need a style more like Ghost in the Shell the movie.  Maybe they could blur the line between what is cel shading and what isn't with the next Metroid.  I think though that Metroid of all games will stay realistic because of the visor (and they want to compete with Halo and PD0).

Basically I love cel shading because it is more like painting and defines objects with light and color more than texture.

Not necessarily. However, it had a direct effect on the GC and anyone who claims ToS isn't epic is plain out stupid.

Megaman is cel shaded/sucky, metroid will never be cel shaded because that not how metroid games are, and sunshine is cel shded already. Well part are.

I'd like to see 3D Castlevania cel-shaded. That'd be awesome. It'd have to have lots of blood thought, just to give it that anime feel.

Watch Castlevania fans complain about Konami turning Cv into a generic anime style...

I'd like to see Nintendo use this in the Mario series and shock me as much as it did when it showed of the Wind Waker.  I think it could be done.

Having said that, I'm all for cel-shading, but I don't want it to become overused any more than I want all games to look grey and realistic.

They could just replace the lighting shape (I think it's an envmap but not too sure) in SMs with a two-tone thing and they'd have cel shading immediately. SMs already used a custom lighting model.

While I'm not going to and "CEL SHADED IS TEH DED!!1" on you. It IS suffering from image damge. I think we need to see a cool down for a period of a couple years and then maybe some high quality cel shaded games could do the form justice. Like WW did.
