Title: Classic Multiplayer Games + Downloads + Online = Fun
Post by: UncleBob on May 21, 2005, 04:10:14 PM
I know this is probably asking for too much, but wouldn't it be great if the classic NES/SNES/N64 games multiplayer modes could be played against/with others online? Oh yeah...

In theory that should be feasible, the NES and SNES didn't exactly have huge RAMs so you could even keep the RAM states somewhat synced (just syncing controller input leads to desyncs). Should work well enough.

They'd have to modify all the games in order to do that, and somehow I really don't think they're going to.

No, you wouldn't have to, really. Remember Xband? No modifications to game software needed. All you would need to do is replace the controller inputs that normally come in through the second (or third or fourth) controller with the ones that come in from the internet.
In fact, this is how a lot of head-to-head Xbox Live games work. The console is "tricked" into thinking the controller inputs from the one you're playing are coming from another controller port on your Xbox. Desyncing occurs when the controller inputs aren't matched fast enough, and then the two different games on each system aren't doing the same thing.
I really would like to see at least some of the older games available to play online. Would make the purchase of individual games more worth it, I think.

I think that a remake of an old game would be more likely to have online.

You really can.
Have you ever used a NES or SNES emulator? It works exactly the same way.
You might argue that they can only play LAN, but still.....broadband would have no trouble.

Zsnes (emu) supports online play and it uses online technology from 10years ago It will be easy for nintendo to make online play only problem would be finding out people and such but I could see them getting around it, since there use to be Zbattle, a program that use to find other people playing zsnes and challenge them to a game

Windyman: As I said, you could sync the RAM (with some good logic determining what is variable even multiple times a second) in addition to controller inputs.

The real issue is making online play trouble-free for these games. Nintendo would have to have the online match-making built into the console's emulation infrastructure. This is certainly possible, but Nintendo may be afraid of mixed results and resulting customer frustration.
