Title: Nintendo Press Conference Tidbits From Jonny
Post by: NWR_Lindy on May 17, 2005, 09:56:42 AM
Our own man at the scene, Jonny Metts, relayed some thoughts on the Nintendo Press Conference via cell phone.

For those of you that haven't had a chance to watch the direct-feed of Nintendo's E3 Press Conference, our own Jonny Metts was there to pass along these thoughts:

Revolution

- No controller was shown.
 - The early trailer of Metroid Prime 3 looked like it was thrown together quickly, more as a quick teaser as opposed to an indication of what the game will actually look like  on the new hardware.
 - No game footage (beyond Metroid Prime 3) was shown.
 - There's a door on the top of the console (when vertical) that opens to reveal ports for GameCube controllers and Memory Cards.

Game Boy Micro

- Jonny said that it was VERY tiny, even smaller than an iPod Mini.

Zelda

- When Link transforms into a wolf, a female character (the Twilight Princess?) hops on his back.  You then control them both.  The female character apparently looks like she's right out of Wind Waker, with a sort of "super-deformed" art style used for her character design.
 - Similar to Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, there are certain parts of the game where backgrounds turn to black and white while foreground characters remain in color, likely for dramatic effect.

Fantastic!  That's one of my concerns cleared up.

Yeah, i watched the conference and missed that.  That's pretty sweet.... and if it supports GCN controllers it definately points to a serious SERIOUS shake up as far as their controller is concerned.

Thinking about this, after Nintendo saw Sony's fugly controller maybe that caused them NOT to show more info.  Knowing that Sony obvious had some work to do there, why would they want to help that process?  I don't think we will see it until Sony has their's set in stone, and not even Nintendo knows when that will be.

Actually I saw it more as being user-friendly than as an excuse to completely wang their controllers.  There's a lot of focus on that download stuff and they can't expect people to require Cube controllers for that and have it take off.

I'm with Pale on this one. To navigate a menu, all you need is either a joystick or d-pad, and at least one button. But, to play ALL Nintendo consoles on one controller, you're going to need a whole lot more than that. Combine the buttons of every Nintendo controller gen and what do you get? A d-pad (every gen), a start button (every gen) a select button (NES, SNES), two shoulder buttons (SNES, N64, GC), an analog stick (N64, GC), a Z trigger (N64, GC), SIX face buttons (N64) and a C-Stick (GC). That's effing MASSIVE. And no you can't always map the c-buttons to the c-stick, or else how would you play KI Gold?

To possibly cut down on this I'm guessing MAYBE the Rev controller won't have something that GC does, but I have no idea what they could remove since all it's buttons are pretty integral. Either that or the Rev controller will be very uncomfortable to play GC games with, or else why would they include GC ports at all?

I'm totally prepared for something INSANE.

I was reading through the IGN transcript thingie, and I couldn't believe Reggie said something straight out of Ian's mouth!

"Nintendo is not an 'or' company. Nintendo is an 'and' company."

You better be happy now

Sounds like a pretty sweet controller to me.  Look at the Cube controller.  Move the start button a little to the left and add a select button.  Now add a round button over the B button and one over the X button.  It doesn't seem too cramped to me and now you've got something that could work for all previous Nintendo games.

Hey that wasn't a complaint, just an observation. I've always been in the six face buttons fan club, and I'd love for them to go back. Thinking about it though, sans the select and Z trigger, This is pretty much a Xbox controller.

A shuffle?  I've never seen one of those close up, but I'm pretty sure those are the same sizes as flash (USB) drives.  I don't think it's that small.  The dimensions are 4in X 2in.
