ya, they may not require developers to make HD games, but I'm convinced there will be support. Statements in a NYtimes article with no source don't mean much.

I thought this was already confirmed!? You'd have a to be an absolute moron to not have HD support, especially considering some games already have progressive scan on the Cube...
If this is true they'd have to be the stupidest company ever.

Well, here is the link...LINK...that nintendojo is refering to since nobody posted it yet.
It doesn't exactly say much though.

Doesn't the Cube support HD (or at least did before they removed the port to cut costs)? Why would they go backwards like that? This thing is supposed to hook up to PC monitors out of the box. I'm sure it will be HD capable.
wandering_nintendo_fan has the right idea in that at worst they're probably not forcing all Rev games to be HD like MS is.

how about we believe Kaplan's words that mention "a new type of HD games" ?

The Rev can connect to PC Monitors
Why would that be if HD games arent possible?
HD arent Forced like 360 games... but i doubt they will elimiante it completely.

Having no HD wouldn't be total suicide, but it would hardly facilitate any kind of "revolution." Not forcing HD is a good idea, though. 40 HD games for 360 launch? I'll believe it when I see it...

Component output isn't HD. That feature is available even on some standard definition TVs too.

Sources like Forbes and the Times are unreliable when it comes to gaming information as they don't take it seriously it's more of a back page rumor mill for them, the Revolution will almsot certainly support High Definition formats.

Mine has it That just means I can have progressive scan.

to simplify the whole component thing. using the component output on a standard definition t.v. will give the best picture, meaning better color and picture because the three colors are isolated better from interferance and get a better connection etc. using the same component output on a edtv or hdtv (enhanced and high definition) will result in a progressive scan. and all the progressive scan signal is is a 480 progressive signal. to be hd it has to be 720p or 1080i or 1080p. so what 480p does is draw all 480 lines of resolution at one time instead of one pass of odds and one pass of evens like analog tv's do. resulting in a sharper more detailed picture but not of hd resolution.* whew*

Just because a game is running in HD doesn't mean it's good, or even looks good, it just means it will have a really sharp picture.

They said last year that the Rev will connect to computer monitors. Presumably then, it will have a VGA or DVI output. Is that enough of a confirmation?

No.

i'm not sure. i know that a computer monitor can be higher res than HD... but i don't know if that correlates to HD output (which i am sure is different in some screwed up technical way)

It's possible it'll still be 640/704x480p, but why would they incur the expense of a monitor output to run at a res they've already achieved with the GameCube?

I've been thinking about that myself. The day that all of the news media ran their stories about the next gen consoles - she had been interviewed and was quoted as saying as it would use DVD-sized media and offer a new type of HD gaming.
...But then again this wouldn't be the first time that she's quoted as saying one thing and then a few weeks later gets contradicted by Nintendo of Japan. It's happened to Reggie, too.
While I do not currently own an HD compatible set, it would be nice for the Revolution to have that feature available should I upgrade to a new HDTV. Honestly, I believe this will seriously hurt Nintendo’s sales. It's bad enough that the Revolution is being regarded as the weakest of the new next gen consoles, even though no specs have been disclosed to the public. If it can't match Sony & Microsoft of features, Nintendo can't rely on their marketing of the console as being a "revolution in way people play games" to generate sales. If the average consumer asks questions about graphical power and performance I can almost guarantee that the GameStop employee recommends either Xbox360 or PS3 while bashing the Revolution for lacking HD output (and possible other features) and being underpowered. At this point I couldn't care less about the damned controller.
With almost no (confirmed) 3rd party support, literally only a handful of games announced, and the popular consensus being that developers have not yet received developer kits - I can't say that things are looking all that good for the Revolution. I don't care about being able to download classic Nintendo games and play current GCN titles on the Revolution. Sure it's a nice feature - but it's definitely not going to be the system seller for me and I find it hard to believe that others feel much differently about it.
I can't honestly say that my next console purchase will be the Revolution. Since I am a one console type of guy, Nintendo had better impress the hell out of me with their new hardware otherwise I will opt for a PS3 or XBox360. If I do that, Nintendo's chance that I would purchase a Revolution as a "second console" are probably less than 5%. I'm sorry to say it - but I'm tired of being faithful to Nintendo while each generation the selection of 3rd party titles gets smaller and smaller. Yeah - I know most of those games are crap anyways, but I would still like to be able to play those few titles that rise above the BS and will be no where to found on Nintendo's console.
C’mon Nintendo…Impress me with the Revolution, I dare you.
