Title: Is 'Toys "R" Us' Phasing Out GameCube?
Post by: Rhoq on April 23, 2005, 07:15:24 PM
Tonight a friend and I stopped into a local Toys "R" Us (Franklin Mills Mall - Philadelphia, PA) to look at the new Star Wars toys (Yeah, we're in out late 20s- so what, LOL)

Anyways - I made my over to the video game section. The very first thing I saw was a display of "Player's Choice" and other budget priced GameCube titles for $14.99 - It appeared that any GameCube game currently retailing for $19.99 was on sale for $14.99. To be fair, I also noticed a few PS2 "Greatest Hits" and XBox "Platinum Hits" mixed in for the same $14.99 price - BUT the selection of titles definitely focused on the 'Cube. At first I thought that was great - until I hit the GameCube isle.

I would estimate that a good 75% of the 40 or so different GameCube titles they had available were severely marked down. I'm talking clearance prices. Recent releases which currently retail for $39.99 and $49.99 were marked down to $19.99, the "Player's Choice" and budget titles were marked down to $14.99 and $9.99. Only 7 or 8 of the games were selling at their full $49.99 price tag. Unfortunately, I either already owned the games or wasn't interested in what was available (a lot of kid's stuff).

I ended up buying Viewtiful Joe 2 for $19.99, but it looks like it was recently reduced to $19.99 by Capcom since GameStop appears to be selling it at that price now, too.

Wow, bargains! Australia is like that, with shops phasing out the GameCube, except they don't cut the price of the games, so we REALLY get screwed.

*goes and buys the one copy of Viewtiful Joe 2 in the country for $100*

It's not the bargains that worry me. It's the fact that most of their GameCube inventory is marked down that has me disturbed.

Well T R U always marks down older games fast and games that are lagging in sales. Ironically in my TRU theres more PS2 14.99 ers than gamecube and Xbox. I guess their just trying to get rid of old invatory. And in my TRU they showcase Nintendo hardware than sony or microsoft's (like on a seperate table with a marquee of "hot titles".) I guess it varries store by store.

The stores just need to burn off all the excess of older games before they can stock up on newer ones. Toy 'R' Us and Circuit City do that down here in the rather large and slightly difficult (I'm not calling it the 'Big Easy'). All the little magazine things that come with the Sunday papers just say PSP games! Buy a DS! 2 for 1 on all Player's choice and etc. titles!
Sometimes I get coupons for buy 2 get one free on all videogame titles and $50 off $200 purchases. Those are good days. Except for when I don't have any money. . .

Great now I need to go buy a boat load of mediocre games so if I trade in my Cube for a Rev I can keep my favorite games.

(bastard, I paid 10 Euros for Rez at an electronics store going bust, not even worth that much)

All I know is that last time I was at Toys'r'us they had all games at 59.99, even the most ancient stuff (Eternal Darkness?!?).

KDR yeah we get that in the US as well Eternal Darkness at TRU is usually 30 - 40 USD at TRU. Also CDworld charges 49.99 for eternal darkness. Some stores have weird pricing policies.

EDIT: My TRU has awesome offers  Sonic Aventure DX and 2 for 30 dollars.   Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 for 30 dollars. Its like a quasi double pack (both game boxes are in 1 plastic anti-theft device box)

I picked up SMB 1 and 2 with this deal (about three months ago).  It was a GREAT pickup.  I loved SMB1 and I liked SMB2 (except for the minigames which I loved).
