Title: Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball
Post by: MaleficentOgre on April 08, 2005, 10:22:37 PM
I didn't see any threads for this game so I thought I'd start one up.IGN's preview
there's IGN's most recent preview of the new quick game play.  sounds rockin'.  The best news out of this is that Billy has mad baseball skills and apparently kicked matt's ass pretty well in it.

Support the game.  We gotta show our "kick matt's ass" support.

I personally like the idea that Nintendo are themselves having a go at sports games, they should expand on this.

I think we now need a "Nintendo Pro Evolution Soccer" to play in Europe - Baseball isn't all that popular here

Well, they tried that whole "NBA Courtside" thing, and I know they've made other sports games in the past.

For better preview, and a video interview with a developer, go to Gamespot's page on the game.

NBA Courtside, imo, was phenominal.  Too bad EA and their little NBA Live came and brainwashed the entire game-playing public.

Anyway.  Definitely looking forward to this.  Baseball games have sucked so far, but this looks interesting.

On another topic, did Mario Baseball turn into this or is this another game entirely?

Whoa... Are you kidding me?
The N64 versions were pretty good, but aside from graphics and C-Stick passing, how did the Cube version even hold a candle to Sega's NBA 2K series?

And you do know that EA's NBA Live pre-dates Courtside by 3 years, right?

Nintendo has a history with MLB too... the Ken Griffe Jr series.

"Nintendo has a history with MLB too... the Ken Griffe Jr series."

I liked the first game of that series on the SNES... no other game to date has captured that spirit of play IMO.  An entire 9 innings played out in roughly 15 min.  Oh and the batting/pitching model was perfect, as was the effect of stats on players in the field (and field control).  Being able to throw out people from left field at first base.... priceless

hey liked nba courtside on n64, i thought the gcn version would be awesome, i just remembered how a lot of players had there own cross over dribble animations and other signature moves, i thought that was brilliant.  But the Gcn version sucked ass, it didn't keep all the signature moves and stuff and it was just way to generic, the game needed much more development.  So what even happend to Left Field Productions did the dev just die after they split with Nintendo?

DAmn the first Griffie game rocked my world... who wouldn't love a game where the catcher was the fastest player on the field?

I'm seriously looking forward to this game--I normally enjoy sports games except for how boaring they get when the games drag on and on, and baseball isn't known to be a fast paced game.  So yeah I'm scoring this one because of the fast-play feature, create a park, sweet graphics and the fact that my girlfriend's little brothers are over here a lot and are absolely obsessed with baseball, and the poor lads don't have anything newer than the N64 thier mother normally puts up in the closet (she's a bitch)

I'm also looking forward to this.  Ken Griffey Jr baseball on the SNES was the funnest baseball game ever, like the Tecmo Super Bowl of baseball games.  If this "fast mode" captures that same feel, which is probably what ninty is going for, awesome.  One thing that's important for Nintendo to do right now is to make games that FEEL different than the MS and Sony offerings.  It's not that hard as most Sony games feel like empty calories.  All flash and little if any substance behind them.  "Fun" is not really a word that applies to many games that people think are really good right now.  Sure "cool" and "amazing" and "funny" might apply but genuinely fun, not usually.  Ken Griffey Jr. baseball for the SNES was FUN.  Funner than any other baseball game released since.

I mean the Mom.  And she is, she takes the 64 away because they're "not doing good in school" getting Bs and a couple As isn't doing good to them, they're Korean

Yea - Koreans do put a lot of emphasis on grades - in Korea they put quite a bit of pressure on students to perform. In fact, one of my Korean friends here told me about a week ago that his friend from Korea committed suicide because he was so stressed/pressured. Ouch..

Anyway, you should really cut her some slack

I have no doubt this'll be a fun game, but any idea if the thing has a "franchise" mode, or is it just a single season?

IMO, Courtside for the Cube was the most fun basketball game to play... the lack of a franchise mode really hurt though.

Also, what's up with David Ortiz for the cover? I mean, I'm a Red Sox fan and all, but seeing as this is a Nintendo game, and Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners, wouldn't Ichiro or Adrian Beltre have been a more logical choice?

Think this'll even see the light of day this year? I've got my doubts. After a couple of delays Nintendo's now completely removed it from the "upcoming" titles on their site. Maybe the delays were bringing it too close to Mario Baseball's launch?

Maybe its better if they just polish the hell out of it for another 10 months and drop it on us Opening Day of 2006. We'll definately need it then, since I doubt we're going to see the 2k series come back for the system's final year.

Any word on this game in 2006?  I'm not a lover of 2k's baseball games (hitting is always so annoying in them) but can't find any firm info on this.  Some places list in for a March 2006 release, others list it as cancelled.

Last I heard, Nintendo put it on indefinite hold, which means it's probably cancelled.  I guess there's a chance that they delayed it for this year due to Mario Baseball, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

One other possibility is that they decided to prepare it for Revolution.  The GameCube already has no reputation for sports games (outside of the Mario sports) so this game would have a much bigger impact on a new system than on the current one.  Still, I wouldn't hold my breath.

As Couch already said, current rumors are that it has been moved to a Revolution launch title.  However, it's just a rumor, so who's to say if it really is.

Earlier in this thread I had referenced Pennant Chase Baseball as playing similar to Ken Griffey Jr. (original) for the SNES.  Now that Mario Baseball does just that (playing identical, although probably at an overall slower pace) will Pennant Chase Baseball really follow in that kind of style?
