Title: New thumbstraps?
Post by: clevelandst124 on March 27, 2005, 09:52:01 AM
Are any companies coming out with new thumbstraps.  I lost mine and I wanted to pick one up to play metroid and FPS with.

I tried Hunters with my actual thumb and it was a disaster.  It had poor detection since the ds only picks up one point of contact and my thumb takes up half the screen.  It was also hard to slide my thumb which made play impossible.

A nintendo thumbstrap would work, however, I'd prefer something different.  I don't want to put the strap onto my system as I would never use it for that purpose.  I remember IGN seemed to think 3rd parties would make better ones but I haven't seen anything but additional crappy styluses.  Any info?

I'd recommend the stylus for that game since using your entire hand/arm is much more accurate for absolute controls (mouse-style). The thumbstrap is nice for analog stick emulation but you wouldn't want to play an FPS with that, especially a competitive one.
Of course, replacing your thumbstrap is something you should do anyway, who knows when you might need it again?

Why does Nintendo make it so hard to get accessories that a lot of people want?  I wound up buying a 3rd party headphone adapter for my GBA because Nintendo's store won't (or at least wouldn't) ship to Canada.  I'm sure there's a huge market for those things, you practically need to own one.  This is pretty much the same thing.

I think that's because in this case the accessory shipped with the system.

I think it has to do with retailer complaints.

Every time Nintendo puts out some little product, and 90% of it sells, the retailer is stuck with the other 10%. Then the retailers start bitching at Nintendo, because it's obviously Nintendo's fault.

So if Nintendo puts out something like the Broadband Adaptor, or the GameCube Component Cable, or odd little knick-knacks like replacement thumbstraps, and retail looks at them kinda funny, saying "Oh, I don't know. Are you sure that they're going to sell?" Nintendo is more and more saying "Fine. Screw you. We're not forcing you to sell it. We'll just take it to our website. Give us a call when you want to be selling our products."
