Title: God of War
Post by: Shecky on March 23, 2005, 04:48:32 PM
So what's the deal with God of War?  Anyone play it?

At first glance I though of Eternal Darkness, but I get the impression that it's not at all similar.

Its more like Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry than Eternal Darkness... ED is more of a Surivol Horror/ than action

Well, ED is more like hack&slay without stats.

Even more ancient bump! Mwah-haha.

Played it for the first time today. Pretty game, couldn't stand the time button presses of the game.

Its like a dumbed down version of Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry.

I played thought the first game when it came out, its a very simple game, story is pretty weak. Its like a popcorn flick of the video game world. Check your brain in at the door and have fun. (if you call it fun). I've seriously never understood why its such a popular game... scratch that I know why its popular its because its ultra violent and gory and has a sex mini game in the first 15min of it.

No way!

God of War was awesome. It wasn't perfect: weak bosses, short length, and Kratos' angst rivals Anakin Skywalker. It was a pretty well-rounded and enjoyable game. The sex and nudity was forced and almost laughable though.

To each his own, I guess.

If you compare God of War to Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry based solely on the action/combat aspects of those respective games, GoW will lose every time. However, God of War is more of an adventure game then those two and that is where it succeeds. It has clever puzzles and the epic scope of everything you do is rather exhilarating, and throw in the fun-despite-being-repetitive combat all with good pacing and you have a game more then worth the time.

God of War II was alot better than the first, the first one had some camera issues and that hades level was so lame and so uninspired.

I love this series.

To quote my brother, "I don't even have the urge to play it. Watching you play it is entertaining enough!"

I just picked this game up myself, and I find it to be rewarding. It becomes clear the further you get how the game got so much praise - the continuous world adds cohesion to the simple gameplay. The puzzles are never hard hard, but sometimes they're dumb hard, which I hate, but whatever. Beautiful vistas, fun to combo, epic in scope. Really great.

I personally think the game is way overrated, while it's a good game I don't think its worth a purchase due to how short both games are I beat the games in one rental period which is usually a week from blockbuster (14 days if you stretch it with their no late fees policy). While the gameplay is pretty good Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden are way superior in every category even in the game play category.

What are dumb hard puzzles? Is that like when you can't get the gate to open and the reason why is you can only see the platform with the switch if you did the double jump on the bridge but you didn't so you wander around for half an hour until you just happen to get the right camera angle to see it? If so, I hate those puzzles too.

Evan is easily impressive.

Neither God of War nor its sequel are $50 purchases (got GoW2 for $33), but they're worth owning. Really, if either game was much longer, it'd get old so I felt the pacing was pretty good in both games.

This is true. I remember reading somewhere that God Of War actually DID NOT break the 1 million mark until they had dropped the price to $20. I think it had moved about 800k by that point... but I can't recalle the source.

Not to say that's a bad thing. Third parties would KILL for a game that sells 800k units, and many Nintendo published titles actually don't reach that number (Eternal Darkness comes to mind, I think).
