Title: Ubisoft Unveils 2005 - 2006 Games

Lots of sequels coming to all current platforms and next-gen.

Ubisoft released a list of most of the big titles planned for the next year, including sequels to the Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia lines as well as a few surprises such as a new Lunar game for Nintendo DS.  Here is the full list.

When Marvelous announced "Ru Na" (bad Japanese equivalent of "Lunar") for the DS, many people were confused, wondering if they were infringing on the "Lunar" series made by GameArts.

Well, it turns out that GameArts has farmed out (bad pun) the development of this game to the makers of Harvest Moon.

It's really nice to see that it has a confirmed English release before anyone even really knew what this game was.

By the looks of the name it might be a prequel, but it could also be a sequel, side-story, or remake. GameArts seems to usually only farm out remakes, saving the new stories for themselves, but Lunar 1 (the "genesis" of the series) has been milked to death lately. And Lunar Legend is even playable on the DS.


Edit: Hmmm... maybe "Lunar Genesis" is Lunar 2, like how "Lunar Legend" was Lunar 1. Except that nothing in Lunar 2 seems to shout out "genesis".

Oh boy!  Tom Clancy 2006!  Prince of the Formerly classy Persia 3!  Everyone's worried about EA taking over Ubisoft, but I'm starting to worry about Ubisoft turning INTO EA.

Ubisoft, if you have any brains GET GAMELOFT TO DO THE DS GAMES!!  Hey wait, wasn't SC Chaos Theory supposed to be  coming to the DS?  I know there's an N-Gage version in development but what about DS?

Funny how a few days ago we were talking about games getting more expensive next gen due to rising costs and here is a perfect example of why.  This is an INSANE amount of games.  Now granted a lot of them are mulitplatform releases but still.  I count 28 unique games.  More than 2 per month.  It's overkill to release that many games in one year.  Most casual gamers, which these titles target the most, probably won't even buy 28 games in total over a console's life.  Hell I don't think I even have 28 games from this generation.

There's no reason to release f*cking King Kong on 9 platforms.  There's no reason to release a Splinter Cell or PoP title EVERY YEAR.  There's no reason to release so many damn Tom Clancy games.  This is overkill and this contributes to the rising costs of games.

Becoming EA?  Ubisoft releases decent but uninspired generic games with an overemphasis on realism on as many platforms as possible.  That sounds pretty close to EA to me.  All they have to do is start releasing annual sports games, buy an exclusive sports licence, and buy popular developers only to milk their franchises to death and disband the company.

I'm going to laugh when all 3 next gen consoles have backwards compatibility and Ubisoft feels stupid for wasting time making next gen versions (which probably won't look any better than current gen versions, otherwise they'd have 3 games to make - handheld, current, next gen).
And why DS, GBA, and PSP versions? I guessing, as usual, the GBA version will be a completely different (and worthless) game, while the DS and PSP versions will be watered down versions of the console ones. Or worse, watered up versions of the GBA one...

And I don't want another PoP game... jeez, save it for later.

The only problem with that reasoning Ian Sane is that the cross-development is cheaper in a lot of ways and ensures that they hit their full market potential.  All the current gen systems are going to be virtually the same, and the next gen version may practically be too, with simply better graphics. More than likely, the handheld versions will all be similar as well. Plus all of the games share the same conceptual design, characters, story, marketing, and perhaps even shipping costs.  

The real trouble is that the handheld and console games will be significantly different, and chances are that the handheld versions will be significantly hampered by trying to live up to their counterparts, instead of being built from the ground-up for the platform.

And the sequel dependency is just maddening.

Ugh!

Crap, crap, and more crap. I still can't figure out how Splinter Cell ended up becoming such a hit series. It's slow, plodding trial and error gameplay. Wow! You get to replay the same segment over and over 20 times in a row until you play the game EXACTLY the way the developers intended the level to be beaten. Game of the Year!

Then there's Prince of Persia. Now, I don't hate this game like Paladin does, but it was by no means GOTY. Not even frigging close. And it was buggy as hell, but none of the reviewers happened to notice that. I suspect Warrior Within must've been nigh unplayable with its bugs, since the reviewers actually mentioned them in their reviews, and actually gave this sequel something other than a perfect score.

Beyond Good & Evil was the only Ubi game that actually warranted a sequel, and it looks like there's no chance of that happening. Looking at the way Ubisoft is becoming, I'm not sure I would want them to make a sequel to it now. They'd probably pull a Warrior Within. Just imagine, Jade's career in photo-journalism isn't working out, so she has to become a stripper. It would sell 5 million copies.

Actually I remember sometime ago there was an interview with the guy who made that game(BG&E) and he said that he wanted to make a sequel, and would hopefully get to do it someday despite the less than stellar game sales.

I think that BG&E should have won underrated GOTY (is there such a category? there should be one from now on)

You mean like hire a retired game designer/animater/film director (lets call him Mordan Jechner) and make one steller sequel to his dead licence (for lols we'll refer to this hypothetical series as Princess of Iran) then ditch him and rape the franchise by ruining the atmosphere and refusing to acknowledge the previous titles in the series before you bought the rights (we'll say that there is already a third game in the series.)

UbiSoft were the rage in 02/03 because sequels is what they didn't do. Don't they relise that?

I help hope against hope I would see BG&E 2 on that list...alas, it was not to be.

And the only game on that list that intrigues me is Myst V.  But, they might have gone PoP on that franchise as well.  

And...maybe Lunar Genesis, because it shows lovin' on my DS, and is an RPG.
