Title: Nintendo offers downloadable games for GBA and DS
Post by: Bloodworth on February 21, 2005, 10:59:00 AM
"Garage Games" available to download for new Play Yan media player.

Nintendo's new Play Yan media player, which allows you to play music and movies on your GBA or DS, launched in Japan today.  Alongside it, Nintendo unveiled a new section of the Play Yan site, featuring downloadable "Garage Games" for the device, which communicates with your PC via Panasonic SD cards.  The first game available is Insect, and a new game will be unveiled each week, for a total of twelve games.  A thirteenth game is available to Japanese Club Nintendo members.

DId anyone else download and run it? It's an asf file.  If you let it install the codec it just shows the intro screen and plays some funny music.  I have a feeling an emulator will hit the net shortly.  Of course, they are only good in case this device doesn't make it to the states.

Cute.  Now how about some GBA game demos?

Demos were actually the first thing that came to mind when I heard about this. It'd be a great idea, but I'm not sure if it'll happen that way.

Would be nice.  Demos on discs are common (at least with PlayStations and PCs) since we all know that discs are cheaper than cartridges.  If they ever did make GBA game demos, this would be the way to do it, eliminating production costs of cartridges altogether.

Or they could have things similar to the downloadable thingies that the GCN-GBA cable have done, if the Play-Yan becomes more popular, it would likely be more successful.

The first thing that came to my mind was that Nintendo would give people the tools to make their own "Garage games" and post them online...

Knowing Nintendo ... not gonna happen.  We all know Nintendo likes to control everything.  If they let anyone create games they'd wind up with Mario beating up hookers or Link and Zelda getting it on.

Oh man I can't wait to play DOUBLE THE FIST on this! Nintendo should advertise it as the Double the Fist viewer.
