Quote Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device will also be able to stand upright or on it’s side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off. The 360°s dashboard will also be customizable, making each console a thing totally unique to its owner.
Some of the inner workings of the 360° have also been confirmed. The device will feature high definition audio and video and wireless controllers, and will come in two flavors—one with a hard drive and one without. The biggest shock is that while Microsoft wants to make their 360° backwards compatible, they haven’t yet been able to pull it off.
“They’re working on it,” said our source.
No pictures included, but a mock up is provided if you go to the link.

Ring of light is the stupidest name for anything ever. And the customizable dashboard was MY idea. I thought of that in a "what should Nintendo next console be like" thread years ago. Those stealing bastards!!
I don't know if the Xbox Next (I'm not calling it 360 until it announced as such) has truly been revealed here but everything mentioned, except for the case design, has been "revealed" in previous rumours before. You don't need an inside source to speculate that the Xbox Next will have wireless controllers and multiple versions with or without a hard drive. Those have been rumoured enough times that in order to create a successful Xbox Next rumour they have to be included.
The backwards compatibility thing is interesting. If the hard drive is optional then it can't be backwards compatible or at least "model 1" can't be.

I remember that thread

If they do get the backwards compatablilty working they could used as added incentive to buy the harddrive upgrade.
I also remember hearing a rumour that Halo 2.5 would be released as a pack-in on the HD-addon, and then Halo 3 would be released the following Christmas to combat the PS3, but that has been discussed elswhere in these boards B4 so I'll leave it at that

It's time we got the Nintendo Triforce, a golden triangular piece of consumer hardware that doesn't fit ANYWHERE.

The Triforce is arcade hardware silly.

Quote One, that the Xbox 360 is definitely going to come with wireless controllers; and two, that it’s going to have an optional hard drive that attaches to the top of Xbox 360 “in a really slick way, almost like the hood scoop on a muscle car.” Better still, “You’ll be able to add the hard drive afterwards without having to take the box apart if you didn’t buy the hard drive version of the Xbox 360.”

Better still?
That would be extremely stupid. Say hello to market segmentation and hidden costs.

Im surprised the "ring of light" wasn't called "halo"(as the thing not the game) .

Well, that'd make it a sacred XBox and you know that MS execs turn to ashes when exposed to holy objects.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't want this sitting in my entertainment center (assuming its real) its a neat concept but I wouldn't know where to put it

mAN, I don't mean to disrespect whatever the final product is, but if something like this is the case (for each maker), we're all in for wild ride when the next systems come out.
WHOO!
People used to say the Dreamcast was "thinking," now we've got "IT'S WATCHING ME..." Sure it's an eyeball, but next time think about a DOAX special edition Boob Console.

Bill's right, it is like that robot thing.
Now, I'm about to expose my ignorance of computers and such, but all those cylindrical things in that see-through mockup, I've seen them on circuit boards before, but it seems to me that you don't see nearly that many of them. Which leads me to believe this is fake...or at least a really embellished mockup if it's real.
I think it looks rather cool, but it's totally impractical. If it's a fake, the artist is very talented.

couchmonkey: CG artists have no clue about circuit boards, they feed a few transistors and stuff into their plugin and let it generate a board.
Considering how insane some earlier XBox concepts were I wouldn't be surprised if MS really had this idea (of course it won't be the final layout). What would we call it, a GameSphere? Or XSphere?

How about Xbox 360?
EDIT: I just noticed this from the forums below the pic.
Quote Title: Xbox 360 Name: Rune Larsen Country: Norway Software: 3ds max
When I first saw the name of the new xbox (Xbox 360) I got a design stuck on my mind, and this is it.
The person who created the pic is flatout saying this is something he came up with. He is in no way claiming it's real. Another rumor bites the dust.

hahaha GAMESPHERE! ahahahahahha
that name is used in one of the funniest south park episodes....hahaha with towelly. Haha "OKAMMA GAMESPHERE!"
*Whew* haha good laugh. Anyways, maybe the title does provide some sort of clue as to the design. Either that or it is the stupidest name ever. Probably both.

I don't think Microsoft would use an idea like this. I'm sure they want to go the way of something that almost blends in to your entertainment system.
