Title: GBA SP display flaw??
Post by: pek on February 14, 2003, 04:33:51 PM
I got my SP yesterday, and there seems to a display flaw. I hope it's just my machine.
I get a ghost image effect going about 4 pixels upwards. It is especially visible when there's light images on a dark/black background, eg, the map screen on Castlevania Circle of the moon.
Anybody else get this too?

interesting. The screen is the same as the one in the GBA. Adding lights to the front wouldn't cause a ghost image.

My machine isn't defective, I had a look at others, they're the same. Ming, yes the screen is the same but there's an extra reflective layer to reflect the light.

Other than the display flaw, is Circle of the Moon easy to see on the GBA SP. I know it was sometimes difficult to play the game because most of the game was dark on the original GBA. I wonder how much the front light will improve the visibility of this game.

yeah, it's possible to play the game whenever now!
Anyone else got the SP yet? Have anyone else seen the ghosting/reflection shadowing?

I've heard no mention of this in any impressions. I really hope you're insane and hallucinating, Pek.
Okay, I don't hope you're insane, but perhaps every unit you've seen has been defective.
Okay, that's not bloody likely either. Drat.

It's probably just a reflection from the internal lighting bouncing off the screen, into the light guide, and back down again.

I see it also. I saw it at 1st time i started my gba SP i was very unhappy i changed it in the store but get anotherone with the same problem. I also seen other SPs ant there was the same problem. I just try to forget about it when i am playing.
another thing : its also visible without the light on , its very dark then but visible so the light is not responsible for it. its just a problem everybody have to work out ^^. Let us all send a e-mail to the nintendo support and collect our answers here PLZ. Its interessant what they will say.

This is simply a problem with the the reflective screen. I would be willing to bet what it happeneing is that the light is reflecting off the screen, and in turn reflectin off the protecive screen cover. If you were to remove the screen cover, I would venture a guess that the problem would go away....
But in all honestly, it is not a big deal. As you say, it is only noticable with light images on a dark background, and even then it is minor. Most of the ime the screen looks very nice, especially in the dark.

Yes the screen loocks very nice. And i just notice it , hardly, when a text screen is coming. The text is a little blurred because of it. But it isn't a reason to become a rabie wolf.
I have some questions to all :
Is this ghosting problem on all GBA SP(and i mean all)?? Is it visible on a GBA modified with a LIGHT?? Is there a new GB planed??
PLZ answer ^^ thx.

I noticed this, and I have been posting topics all over then net, to see that I am not the only one with this "problem".
Well the issue in it selv didn't bother me, it bothered me to think that not everyone had this.
After many posts on different forums, it seem there are two opinions on this matter. They who see it, and they who don't bother to look that closely, and just through out their anwser: YOUR GBA IS FAULTY- GO GET A NEW ONE, MINE IS PERFECTLY FINE!!!!

The GBA SP (black) I got for my birthday had a dead line of pixels at the top (ser# XEF102xxxxx) . Not wanting this I called Nintendo and later send it to them. I received a new one a couple of days later (ser# XEH113xxxxx).
This screen looked OK, so I was very pleased. I didn't notice anything during the entire day but when I played in the evening I immediately noticed the ghosting effect! I called Nintendo again. The had never heard of the problem but I was allowed to send my SP back again and they'd take a look at it. I got a call from them during the day that they didn't see it. I instructed them to look at it in a dark room and a couple of minutes later they noticed it too! They told me they would send me one without ghosting. Minutes later I received another call. All the other SP's they tested all had the same problem so there was nothing they could do about it. They did however send me yet another one (ser# XEH113xxxxx). Regretably this one is ever worse!!
I'm really fed up with it. I'm not playing on the SP anymore. I constantly see the ghosting effect. A friend of mine also has an SP (blue) and although if you look really hard you can see some ghosting it's not nearly as bad as mine!
Wish I'd kept the first one. This is much worse than the dead pixel line..

I've never noticed it, so I just had to try on Castlevania map, and I DO see it. Doesn't really bother me at all though, during the game I don't see any ghosts image.
Great game anyway, I am having a blast, I can't imagine playing it without a light. I'm definitely picking up the new Castlevania after I'm done with this game.
