Title: DS Case
Post by: vudu on December 30, 2004, 08:36:19 AM
Anyone found a good hard case for the DS yet?
I really dislike soft cases--I need something I can throw in my suitcase without fear of it getting crushed. I have the Mad Catz ArmorCASE SP for my GBA SP and it works very well. I'm hoping to find something similar for the DS.
The Mad Catz MicroKIT DS looks promising, but I haven't see one in person, so I don't know how great it is.
Any one have one of these, or a different case worth mentioning?

Did Madcatz sent u or something? That MicroKIT looks exactly the same as this one:
It looks protective but I like the soft cases cuz they always seem to have a place for at least one game. Yeah a game would probably fit it there too but I don't want it to move. And besides, Madcatz sucks and u know it! Well that's what I've heard anyway...

Well DS games are so small you could fit them in your pocket. I could put quite a few in mine and would be cool with that.

Nah. Honestly, I'm not a very big fan of Mad Catz. I would never buy one of their controllers or memory cards. However, I am fond of their GBA cases.

I've got the case pictured, or something very similar. It works fine, nothing spectacular, but it keeps the stuff in order. It was a part of my gift, though, and I wouldn't personally spend too much on it.

Cases only ellude to the fact that something which is weak is contained within. Earn fist and just never stop using your DS.

DemonFox, meet our running gag. Well, one of our running gags. Come to think of it, this forum has way too many running gags.

Sorry to revive an old, crusty thread.
I'm going on a trip in a few weeks and I need a case to keep my DS in so it doesn't die in my suit case.
The only two hard cases I've been able to find are the Mad Catz MicroKIT DS and the Intec Safe Case Nintendo DS. I've read a few reviews on both and half say they both suck, and half say they're both decent but nothing great. Does anyone have a fabulous third option that I'm unaware of? Has anyone used either of the two mentioned cases?

I have the Intec Safe Case. I don't know what the standards for game cases usually are (I don't own any, this was given to me with the DS), but mine has served me well. It's fairly durable (as in it hasn't fallen apart) and has room for stuff. I have an extra pen, a screen cleaning cloth, and two games. I'm not sure how many games it'll hold at a time (it only has two places for them, but more than one game might fit in each slot), but you'll get at least three. It works, but if you want something that'll last you a decade you might want to look elsewhere.

The DS can take a beating, I'm not using a case at all and it isn't even scratched.

Along the same lines, does anyone know a company that makes screen protectors that are sold without a bunch of other crud? All I've seen is a "DS Starter Kit", which has a bunch of stuff I don't need.

I use the same madcatz case for my DS. Works great, holds the system and 3 GBA games... I used a separate soft pouch to hold any GBC games, power adapters, and headphones.
I use the official Nintendo DS case (smaller of the two version available). It's the same size of the unit and holds the unit, 8 games, and has a pouch for things like the power adapter and headphones.
As for screen protectors, I found BoxWave Crystal Clear Touch to be *very* nice. I use them on my digital camera and DS. When there on, you can't even tell (when comparing the 2 screens they look identical)

Shecky - What official Nintendo DS case are you referring to? I haven't seen any available.
EDIT: Nevermind. I think you're referring to this one. It seems nice enough, but I'd really prefer a hard case.

If you want a hardcase you can always try the Intec one I saw these frequently in EB. The only draw back is that it only holds the DS (well thats obvious since its a hardcase). Intec Case
EDIT: Opps looks like you mentioned it up there sorry.

Actually that's not it. The only link to a picture that I could find real fast is this one. That's a bit expensive at that site though... I paid $10 USD when the DS launched and Circuit City had it on sale for $5 USD a few weeks ago (probably b/c they may have been selling out their stock....). There's a larger version that's about double the size. They're both quasi rigid, but not a hard case. I'll find out how well it does in a few days when I take it on my first real trip.
What your specifically asking for is datapoints on the 2 hardcases you listed, but I figured I just throw in my datapoint as well in addition to the screen protector info.

Pros: -The case is very sturdy. I imagine I could stand on it and maybe even bounce up and down for a while and it wouldn't break. -There is are a few mesh pouches on the inside of the lid that will hold 3 or 4 games.
Cons: -The hinge seems fairly weak. It could probably snap off fairly easily. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except it only opens 90 degrees. If you're not careful, you could open it too much and it would snap right off. -There's no place meant to keep the strap/thumb nub. -The spot for the DS is slightly too large, and the DS will tend to wiggle around a bit.
Luckily, the last two cons cancel each other out, as you can fold the strap in half and use it to wedge the DS against one of the sides.
