Title: Disturbing conversation overhead at a Game Stop...
Post by: Rhoq on November 12, 2004, 01:50:34 PM
Alright, I was on my way home from work this evening and decided to stop into the Game Stop a few blocks away from my house. I was really looking for a DS kiosk - which they did'nt have. Anyways. I was browsing through the GameCube software contemplating a purchase of Mario Power Tennis when the I overheard the following conversation between 2 of the store's 3 employees (all appeard to "kids" - under 18, by-the-way):

Game Stop employee #1 - What good games are out for the GameCube?
Game Stop employee #2 - GameCube? (laughs) - Man, the GameCube sucks.
Game Stop employee #1 - Oh, well I just bought one for Resident Evil 4. If Nintendo didn't have Resident Evil, I probably wouldn'y have bought a GameCube.
Game Stop employee #2 - You wasted your money. Resident Evil 4 is coming out for the PS2, too.
Game Stop employee #1 - Yeah, I know - but it will be so much better on the GameCube.
Game Stop employee #2 - (laughs some more) Dude - PS2 will have in 6 months to a year after the GameCube gets it. It will be the same game - plus it will have on-line. Nintendo has disappointed me. The GameCube could have been great but they let it fall apart.

At that point I was disgusted enough by what I had just heard, that I left the store without buying anything. I can only image what they would if someone stopped in there looking to buy a GameCube.

Yes, I know these are Game Stop employees I'm talking about here, but still - certain conversations should be had away from customers.

I have yet to see the point of console bashing.  I have owned all three systems at one time or another and there was a time where I owned all three at the same time.  I just don't understand how gamers can put down the gamecube.  After my xbox broke, which they all seem to do, and I sold my PS2, I relly fell in love with this system, it has everything I need to satisfy my gaming appitite.  I traded my broken xbox and all my games for more cube games, no regrets here.  If I were you, I would have walked up with that copy of Mario Tennis with a big smile from ear to ear and plopped down the cash and asked what they thought of this game

I just came from Meijers tonight and bought 3 games: Mario Kart DD; Zelda; and Metroid Prime. However, I had played those games before and traded them in for other games. I did miss playing them and regretted trading them in, so I did the right thing.

I got a medium sized chips (fries for those playing at home) today. I've had them before, but I ate them. Now I'm glad I have more. So do GameStop employees actually play video games?

*Customer strolls in*
"MY GOOD MAN, WHAT GOOD GAMES ARE THERE ON THE GAMECUBE?"
"Dunno lol we got Halo 2 in the other day and there's a whole stack of N-Gage sitting around"
"I DISLIKE YOUR BRAIN"

The Gamestop I have is cool.  Really awesome guy works there and they have Smash Bros. tournaments and stuff.

I love going into game stores and having arguments about the cube.  Gamestop and EB will actually fire employees for hindering customer enjoyment or something like that.  If you mention gamecube and they say anything negative they can be gone.

The only conversations regarding consoles I overheard so far were employees explaining to customers how to mod XBoxes and rip games to the harddrive...

I'm quite pleased by the guys at my local EB.  They tend to be pretty open minded regarding the console wars and they seem to actually have a legitimate interest in games.  Of course they still bug me about strategy guides and pre-orders and all that crap but you can't win them all.

I have never heard any of them say something sucks.  Not even N-Gage or that Aquaman game.  And that makes sense.  A stores' employees should act like everything they sell is amazing.

Heh, back in early-ish '97 I went into High-Tech World (craptastic local game shop) with a mate who wanted to buy a Saturn. We asked the guys how much they were selling them for, they told him to get a PlayStation instead. "But I don't want a PlayStation, you can't get Panzer Dragoon and  Burning Rangers on that" "Yeah but we've got this awesome pack that includes a PlayStation with Time Crisis! Nobody likes Saturn, the thing's dying! Only PlayStation's getting Tomb Radier 2!"

He told them off, we went into Kmart and he got his Saturn. LOSE SALES EVERYDAY.

OH I'M DOWN! *buys ten*

I actually know a few guys that work in EB these days - guys that I used to go to school with, one guy that I used to work with, and I'm on first name basis with the manager of one store ^___^ And none of them are ignorant clowns

The best way to show your dissaproval is with your feet - by shopping elsewhere.

Indeed. Use that "dollar vote" they were always ranting about in Economics class!

It's sad that certain stores employ such tards but hey I won't condem the entire franchise for it. My local GameSop and EB are both very Nintendo friendly.

Yeah, I work at GameCube and everybody is a Xbox advocate. I find it sad that you can only get 30 bucks trade-in for a used GameCube. Although, I laugh the day the prices soar up in anticipation for The Legend of Zelda. The console's trump card.

Do you think Game Stop or any other electronics retailer in the world actually hire people that are
unbiased, intelligent and objective?
No, they take stupid people that dont find other jobs.

I don't think they are searching out those attributes and the majority of people are dumb so in conclusion any unfiltered mass must have a dumb majority.

It really depends on the store you walk into.  Actually, maybe it depends on who manages the stores in your town...the EBs near me have actually shared employees, so obviously they're interdependent.  Anyway, I'm quite happy with the ones near me.  The mployees actually ask customers questions about the games they're buying or trading in and I've never heard negative things about any particular console or game.

I actually had the opposite problem.  The guys at the local EB were rather biased, but the guys at Gamestop were pretty open, and Nintendo friendly.

That, and they remember my name.  How cool is that?  I have my DS pre-ordered at the Gamestop, but I've actually changed my mind about some of the guys at EB.  One snuck me the cool "Fatal Fury" hat you'd normally get with the new KOF game, after I asked him if it was for sale.

And, I was just in my Gamestop, and the DS was not only getting alot of attention (they had the kisosks there, and I played a little Hunters), but the clerks were genuinely trying to sell it.  I was impressed.

I buy stuff from Game Crazy because they talk at our language instead of being a salesman about it.

GStop is always like telekmarketing to me.  They get me to buy other things other than what I buy.  A lot of times they don't even know what I'm talking about and its usually something obvious.  If I say Halo the number one thought that should come to their head is that it belongs on the xbox instead of "What system?"  If they're wrong then you correct them.  Its just the way they say, "What system?", that kind of makes it sound like they don't know what they're talking about.  I know they can hire anybody but it sure sucks when they advertise that the employees play their game at work.

GCrazy well like earlier talk at the language thats really comfortable to me.  Its like talking to people at a forum.  They only tried to sell you the discount card but even that is attractive since you guys buy games all the time that paying for that is a drop in the bucket.  The people that work there most of the time are usually always excited because they get to talk to you about games.  They apply not because its just a place to get money because they can surround themselves with more games and play them.

Draygaia: When you ask for Halo in a store the clerk HAS to ask for the system since alo isn't XBox exclusive. Now if you said Halo 2 then I'd aree that this guy knows less about games than Joe Sixpack.

Noone ever tried to sell me anything when buying games. Okay, there was this one time a local retailer gave me the VJ T-Shirt with the game although I didn't preorder for 5 cent extra but even EB didn't ask (but they told me LoZ was "in original packaging" even though a retarded monkey with cabbage for eyes would have noticed it was rewrapped, nothing to say about forgetting to erase their saves).
