Title: the name game
Post by: Pikkcuber on September 28, 2004, 03:45:09 PM
Okay this has been buggin me for a long time. When did bowser drop his king koopa name? Ive always been partial to the name koopa. And when did the princess start being called peach?

He's still called Koopa exclusively in Japan, though the two names have been pretty much interchangable in the U.S....Toadstool was first called Peach in Super Mario 64...

Yeah if I remember correctly (which I do) they started calling her "Peach" to sync up her name with the Japaneese versions where they had been calling her that already.

It's been generally assumed that Bowser's full name is King Bowser Koopa. Same thing with Peach, Princess Peach Toadstool.

Now we'd need Pauline and Daisy's last names... I mean, it isn't Pauline Kong yet, is it? Mario is called Mario Mario, IIRC, Luigi was therefore Luigi Mario, right? Oh man, this stuff is confusing...

I can remember playing Mario 64 for the first game and Peach syaing her name was Peach. I had pretty much adopted Daisy as her first name based on the movie and Super Mario Land.
And the Oringal Donkey Kong Jr is now Donkey Kong right? And the old Donkey Kong is Cranky Kong?

"Mario is called Mario Mario, IIRC, Luigi was therefore Luigi Mario, right? Oh man, this stuff is confusing..."
That always bugged me huge. The first time I read it was in Gamepro. Someone sent a letter asking asking why they were the Mario Bros since Mario isn't their last name. Gamepro asked Nintendo and a rep said that Mario was their last name which is f*cking retarded. I'm pretty sure that rep just made it up on the spot without asking NCL or Miyamoto. Much like NOA's ridiculously inconsistent Zelda history they posted on their site I just don't except it as canon until I see it in a game.

It's in M&L, Ian...

It is? Damn.

I've come to accept that Nintendo makes games and not novels. Don't go looking for plot consistency across games unless you want a headache! Argh, Mario and Baby Mario in the same game! The universe is imploding!

"Argh, Mario and Baby Mario in the same game!"
Or Baby Bowser and Bowser in the same game. Mario and Baby Mario in Mario Tennis is sort of acceptable since it's a spinoff game and Camelot made it so we can assume they didn't know better. But Super Mario Sunshine is made by EAD, the same guys who made Yoshi's Island and thus should know that Baby Bowser and Bowser are the same being. I don't know how Miyamoto can miss that kind of thing when he CREATED Mario. You figure he should care more about it than the fans.
Edit: I just thought of another oddity. All Yoshis are supposedly named Yoshi. Yet in Super Mario RPG there's a blue Yoshi named Boshi. So is Boshi the only Yoshi who isn't name Yoshi? That's just weird.

"Or Baby Bowser and Bowser in the same game."
Don't confuse Baby Bowser(who is a young Bowser) with Bowser Jr(his "son")...Ninty never really explained Jr's appearance, but I keep hoping it's not a way to get rid of the Koopa Kids...
And I don't think Ninty really wanted to give each Yoshi their own individual name... ^_^

"Don't confuse Baby Bowser(who is a young Bowser) with Bowser Jr(his 'son')...Ninty never really explained Jr's appearance"
You're right. The identical appearance made me think it was Baby Bowser in Super Mario Sunshine. It's still weird as hell to make a new character that looks exactly like another character and then not explain who he is in any way. In Super Mario Sunshine they acted like Bowser Jr always existed and that we already knew who he was.
Which one is in Mario Kart: DD? Baby Bowser or Bowser Jr? Hey that's an EAD game with Baby Mario and Mario co-existing so Miyamoto has made the screw up himself.

Time and space don't exist in Mario's world...
(It was Bowser Jr. in Double Dash)

It is funny that you mention plot weakness. Yamuchi reportedly wants to make movies. About poems though so maybe it will be okay.

Hee hee, weird! I'll pay a dollar to see Yamauchi's movie. Bowser Jr. and Baby Bowser have some subtle differences - I think Baby Bowser has a bigger head and larger eyes (that practically pop right out of his head) but I definitely agree about the similarities. I'm afraid Nintendo is going to "merge" the two characters in the future somehow.

Ian, did you ever see the Mario Brothers movie? That came out years ago, and that is where their last name first came up. M&L kinda played off of the same gag, hoping to bring _some_ consistancy into the Mario universe.
Oh, and Peach refers to herlsef at the begining of Mario64 as Princess Toadstool, Peach.

There was some horrible injustice in that Mario movie. The chick was named "Daisy Toadstool".

Which probably stemmed from the assumption that the princess in SML and SMB were the same person. I think the only really explainable change would be Birdo (got his operation).
Ian: The MKDD manual also complains that having the baby Bros. and the Bros. in one game makes no sense, but who cares when it means "chain chomp time"?
RAB: Then DK must've aged pretty fast, Mario didn't get any older between DK and SMB (well, okay, he changed lovers and his profession). nless it's some Peter Pan style wonderland Mario should've aged as well. Well, if anyone gave a damn about consistency in Mario games. As Miyamoto said, "We make a game, when we're done with the game itself we make up a story that somehow fits with the game" (or was it Aonuma? Either way, it was in regards to Wind Waker, after admitting they've scrapped a much more elaborate story on Miyamoto's order because they feared it would be too compex).

I'm not sure where the "Mario Mario, Luigi Mario" thing came from. But I'm pretty sure it wasn't the movie.
I can remember sitting in the theater watching the movie and being really happy that they explained their names correctly so I must have known about the "Mario" last name before that.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was a game where I thought "whoa, talk about lame" when I read that Mario Mario bit. Bill mentioned M&L, but there might have been one before that.

Maybe game age has to do with how active you are in current titles. If you're still in the public eye you remain timeless. Mario has consistently made games since his debut so he doesn't age. Donkey Kong however was MIA since Donkey Kong 3 and didn't return for ten years. Ten years is two generations in videogame years. Thus DK aged two generations (say about 40 years) and thus is an old geezer while Mario remained active during this time and thus didn't age.
Or maybe gorillas just age quicker than humans do.

That's what it has to do with most likely...Gorillas only live like a max of 40ish years in the wild...(Aha, explaining Nintendo with Biology :thumbsup

40 years is still a lot. Even if he just aged ten years Mario should have shown some signs of aging, too. But then again Mushroom Kingdom is just a hallucination induced by too many mushrooms, right?

Yes and Dream World was induced from bad pasta.

Which reminds me, when did Birdo become "real"?

Why don't you ask the same about Shy Guys?
(All dreams are based on knowledge already stored in your brain, so apparently Mario had seen those creatures before)
But to answer your question, I believe Super Mario RPG was her first "real" appearance...
Title: RE: the name game

I thought the name Mario Mario was first brought up in an old Nintendo Power. I forget who came up with it, it may have been some writer there, but I think it may even have been Miyamoto himself.
If I may... you can visit www.mariomonsters.com to learn what games Mario enemies appear in. It's definitely not my own site. To be more specific, though, here are Super Mario Bros. 2 enemies' first appearances in the Mushroom World: Super Mario Bros 3: Bob-omb Super Mario World: Pokey and Ninji SMW2: Yoshi's Island: Shy Guy and Snifit SMRPG: Beezo (listed as Shy Away) and Birdo
Also, Wart had a cameo as "Mamu" in TLOZ: Link's Awakening.

Link's Awakening was a dream too... ='D

So, there must be some common childhood experience between Link and Mario? Perhaps Link was the third Mario Bros. and when the other two got sucked through the sewers of Brooklyn into Mushroom Kingdom, a fairy teleported Link to Hyrule (which would even explain his different appearances through history). I mean, we KNOW that Hyrule is in another dimension but the Mushroom Kingdom is somewhere beneath the planet's surface, right?
Title: RE: the name game

Well both worlds are in a different dimension...It's just that the Mushroom Kingdom is/was somewhat linked to our planet...

Super Mario Bros 2 is REAL. It's in a little grey cartridge.

There is nothing "little" about an NES cartridge.
