Title: The DS as a controller?
Post by: The Omen on September 28, 2004, 07:58:38 AM
I was just thinking(or not thinking) that maybe the Revolution will be able to use the DS as a controller. It would be cool to already own a controller , then buy the REV and have and have it packed with one analog. That is all.

How could you use it as a controller when it has no analog sticks? I imagine the Revolution controller is going to have analog sticks. I'll bet the DS will connect with the Rev in some way but it won't be a controller replacement. I remember when people talked about how cool it would be to use the GBA for a Cube controller. Why? It has less buttons and would work for virtually no games. This is the same thing. Is having to buy one less controller in exchange for a gimped controller that doesn't work with every game worth it? If Nintendo is going to go to the trouble to support that then they might as well go all the way and let us use NES, SNES, N64 and Cube controllers too.

There is a stylus, you know. They could draw an analog stick on there if they wanted.
But I agree... I don't want the DS to be a controller, I'd much rather they made the Revolution controller all it's cracked up to be.

Oh no, it's connectivity! Actually, DS connectivity would be interesting since it would allow you to use the stylus. The GBA doesn't really offer anything the GameCube controllers can't already do, except a private screen...some developers came up with neat applications for it, but a DS could be very handy for a wide variety of applications...namely using menus and drawing stuff. I doubt this is an idea Nintendo could use to sell ten million Revolutions (or DS-es), but it would be a nice feature to have for some games.

My thinking of DS/Revolution involves Mario Paint...The DS could be used as a tablet, which would then connect wirelessly to the Revolution(which would then appear on the TV screen), and then you could save your projects onto a memory card/hard drive...

I was thinking of the stylus being used as a mock analog stick...and was NOT thinking of the DS as the main controller, just a nice little bonus when buying the Revolution. Plus, some games still use the D-pad. Some fighting games for one.

Bill: Uh... Bah, a tablet without pressure sensitivity... That would suck, I tell ya!

A tablet without pressure sensitivity would suck, but it's better than trying to draw with analog sticks, by far! I think a Mario Paint type app could be very cool paired with a suitably large storage device...Nintendo put forth the idea with the 64DD that you would be able to create graffiti, faces, and other texture graphics for compatible 64DD games using Mario Artist. I loved that idea, but I always felt it would be incredibly awkward using a controller. (Edit: and then Nintendo never really delivered on it anyway, of course.)
Still, with a mouse (or stylus) I would have created dozens of patterns for Animal Crossing by now, but it's too frustrating to do with the analog stick; I think I've made about three patterns.
