I did.  I was a big fan of the first movie, and Viva Rock Vegas took that joy and obliterated it.      I'm curious to see if I like the movie any better now, as I haven't seen the first movie in many years.

he has a girlfriend that he wants to be with

she resembles the great late Michael Jackson, or does he resemble her?

Johnny is good at sports

but has low grades

he wants to join the Military

mainly because his girlfriend wants to join

but his parents don't approve

but he's going to join anyway, because its his choice

the other reason he wants to join is because
he gets to fly in ships

despite being perfect for the job he has some set backs
his girlfriend dumps him as soon as he joins..they are in different branches anyhow


he gets a man killed, and as a result he gets his ass whipped like Kunta Kente.


but despite this he finds purpose

the bugs kill his parents and many people he knows, and destroy his hometown


now this sounds like the plotline for some fascist military recruitment movie?







some critics panned this movie as nothing more then a mindless summer blockbuster
about shooting bugs

but it is actually quite an intelligent satire, about facism and militarism. The acting is masterfully hammy and cliché. The movie doesnt act like its a 1997 movie about the future, it acts like a 2357 movie aimed to propagandize a generation into a contemporary fascist state.
The movie is made by Paul Verhoeven who geniusly lampooned corporations in Robocop. The movie is designed entirely to mimic a propaganda film of the 1940s, it might as well be about this guy. Squint your Eyes.

Chill out.  I'm probably going to be joining the fray within a day or so (though don't expect mountains of images and pithy little internet jokes.  That's not my thing), as I just need to acquire the movie.  I haven't seen Starship Troopers in ages, so that could be fun.  I actually have kind of fond memories of that CG animated series that came after it, though they're soured by the fact that the show was canceled before it ever got a conclusion.

Casper Van Dien hasn't gone far because he's not a great actor, he was probably picked because he was such a ham bastard who is more good looking than talented. Some **** is so hammy it must be satirical, like the end scene when they pull out the huge Vagina Brain and Dougie Houser gives his big speech about how it wasn't all their big technology that got the Brain it was a drill sergeant who did the move that was a turning point in the war. Its the type of movie made by the Nazis to get the average German soldier to join the party. However, American WWII propaganda was just as bad.

the nuking the planet thing I thought about too...you see thats the best way to do it, but the Federation is raising dumb people and sending them to war so they can combat overpopulation. Why not use tanks, and air raids? Why are they fighting WWI style? Also, nuking the planet makes in uninhabitable. They might be wanting to colonize it.

I also never noticed how bad the CG was for that missing arm from the teacher.


I would do pics again, but this laptop is on it's last week(s) and streaming video from Hulu is choppy to say the least. Rewinding also leads to commercials breaks so that makes getting the perfect pic also a little hard.

But Rico's girl could pilot my ship anytime. and I mean anytime.

I know it's been mentioned but are we really supposed to believe that thy are High School students? Is that what they are supposed to be? because Rico looks to be pushing 30 (mid to late 20's easy) and the jealous chick looks to be slightly older than that.

after a quick IMDB search...
(Both of them were actually born 3 days apart back in Dec. of 1968.... This movie was made in 1997. that makes them both almost 30 when this came out.)

Wow, I just realized that every time I've watched this movie, it's been when it aired on TV (I think).

That first shot of the schools dance reminded me a little bit of Rain in Las Vegas.
Has anyone been there before? I think it's in the Palms Hotel.

Break up over pre-recorded message infront of the whole room & ended it with the "lets be friends" line. That is cold.
You'd think that in whatever year they are in right now, they would have some real-time video conferencing in a way that was more private than that. Considering that everyone today has a personal cell phone that for the most part is technically capable of doing that today, I would expect it from the people of the future as a standard.
