Some lucky indie titles will get temporarily raised above the rubble of the eShop tomorrow.
Nintendo will air the year's first Indie World tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET (7 a.m. PT, 1600 CET). It will run for about 20 minutes.
The last Indie World Presentation aired in November.

Things we missed last week: Previously Japan-only Famicom game Super Xevious: Gamp no Nazo (Mystery of Gump) was the Archives game, apparently eligible due to being a Nintendo Vs arcade series machine.
The biggest game of the week is Microsoft's Grounded crossing the aisle to come to Switch, as featured in the opening of the last Partner Showcase. After that, though? It gets WILD, largely due to the Western release of "the slapping game", the Rose and Camellia collection which includes among its games a LA MULANA crossover. Dana White can't even. As revealed last week with a demo, we also have the Picross Logiart Grimoire (a darker take on the franchise, as featured in Steam Early Access).
Other titles of note: A new version of Ikki that even the eShop description admits nobody really wanted, Hydlide II finishes the... story? from the EggConsole line, and a technological take on Reigns from Devolver. Also from Disclaimer Corner: Sokobond Express is a title from Draknek and Friends, which includes frequent NWR contributor Syrenne McNulty as a producer.

A seemingly quiet week awaits on the eShop, though there are a few entries in the chill genre headlined by former Indie World spotlight game Botany Manor - it may not have a price in North America yet for some reason, but you can probably estimate to within a few cents in the US based on European pricing. Also providing some stress relief in various fashions are Moonglow Bay and Slave Zero X - that last one certainly isn't cozy, no sir or ma'am - while the Eggconsole strikes again with Dragon Slayer IV or as we probably know it, Legacy of the Wizard.
Later tonight, we bid farewell to the online play for 3DS and Wii U - be sure to grab your last SpotPass downloads before they go down.

Things posted late last week: Taito's Volfied (a Qix successor?) was in the Archives, Cricket 24 was all out for 60 somehow though picked up ten extra runs in Europe, and in North America only a girl's game jam project called "What They Don't Sea" dropped on Friday. (If you were wondering why they had a trailer on Nintendo's YouTube, that's why.)
The quarter opens not with a bang - though Pokemon Go's April Fool's Joke is the first one in years that is actually remotely useful and I will spend most of Monday grinding it - but a whimper. We'll give game of the week honors in celebration of Sonic's 30th anniversary as the sequel to one of the better indie takes on "furry things go fast" in Freedom Planet drops a sequel on Thursday, though I'm more apt to jump on Tengoku Struggle -Strayside- thanks to the whole "written by the team behind Olympia Soiree" in the game's eShop description.
Smaller things of note: A licensed game based on the Girl Genius graphic novel, a game that does "Papers, Please" with a pawn shop and no apparent Lucas Pope in "No Umbrellas Allowed", and... in what I thought might have been an AFD joke if I wasn't checking it on Sunday, a game called "Cats Organized Neatly" which I can tell is the ultimate fantasy game because there is no way cats would let you move them into an organized fashion.

A beleaguered Kickstarter project originally slated to release this week is getting another three months in the oven.
Following an announcement last fall of a March 28, 2024 launch date for Hatch Tales, developer Atooi confirmed to backers today that the remake of Chicken Wiggle was now slated to launch on June 21.
In addition to the delay announcement, stated as due to a desire to "deliver an unparalleled gaming experience that exceeds expectations", a new trailer was released:

There will be one more update to a Switch Online Expansion Pack library this week before the calendar tips over to April.
Nintendo have confirmed the launch of Game Boy Advance launch title F-Zero: Maximum Velocity will occur this week for subscribers to the Expansion Pack tier of Nintendo Switch Online. It previously was a 3DS Ambassador title and an early title for the Wii U's Virtual Console GBA service.
I'm for the revival of DS franchises on Switch, just... not by those guys.

Things we missed last week: Konami's Surprise Attack was the Archives game, and 505 Games-published survival game Unturned also surprise-dropped.
If it's possible for a quarter to simultaneously go out with a bang and a whisper, this one does. The quantity is certainly there - 40+ in both NA and Europe - but the QUALITY? Not so much. Last month's Partner Showcase has probably the two biggest games of the week in drilling platformer Pepper Grinder (demo available) and South Park: Snow Day, or you can head down to the farm for a kid-friendly version of Farming Simulator. Smaller titles of note: A pair of Hudson titles based on Felix the Cat are being released on Switch by Konami in one package - which depending on your stance on NES and Game Boy games may be a bit on the high side of the price bar - while Annapurna has a new adventure in Open Roads and the oft-delayed colonial sequel to UK-based adventure title Not Tonight is finally landing. There's also a new version of Ufouria under its prior name of Hebereke.
But there's one big, pricey elephant in the room. The entire Touch Detective series - including the previously unlocalized third game - is coming out in a collection this week after hitting in Japan a couple of years ago. Normally I'd recommend it, but for now I have to recommend avoiding it due to its publisher, noted heels Nicalis. If it's any consolation, it might come out under a different publisher or the original devs soon.

Aspyr Media has become embroiled in another controversy involving a Star Wars re-release and modding, this time allegedly including mods without credit.
A mod maker for the PC version of Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) has indicated that the Switch version of the port released last week contains combat techniques added in their mod without permission or credit. The claim - with video and pictorial proof - was posted on Twitter:

Aspyr has not commented publicly on the situation. Previously, the company was blasted for announcing "Restored Content" DLC for 2022's Knights of the Old Republic II re-release before cancelling it a year later with no explanation. As well, the attack in question appeared in the original Nintendo Direct trailer where the collection was announced, with Aspyr stating it would not be in the final game.

It looks like the stupidity of the end of the quarter will be headed our way NEXT week, because at least looking at it on Monday morning it's a short week that's also very top heavy. The reason for this is primarily twofold: Princess Peach: Showtime! at the end of the week, with MLB The Show 24 kicking it off right around the time 22's cover athlete plays a regular season game for a National League team for the first time. One has a preload already on, the other technically has a digital deluxe version which could allow you to call Play Ball early, so take your shot. If you prefer the other form of role-playing, the second best JRPG to feature a frog as a party member - The Legend of Legacy - gets a remaster this week.
The indie titles tend to hue more toward jokes, in that I have to point out that Power of Ten is NOT the Drew Carey-helmed game show that got him the hosting gig on The Price is Right. Meanwhile, *I* want to speak to a manager at Nintendo to figure out why we're getting a scrolling shooter game based on shooting literal Karens. (And can I rename them? There's a few people I'm forced to work with on a daily basis that would qualify.)

Things we missed last week: Ubisoft stealth-dropped a sequel to 2014 UbiArt adventure game Valiant Hearts: The Great War (Valiant Hearts: Coming Home), Battle City precursor Tank Battalion from Namco is your Arcade Archives game of the week, and one developer made the list for dropping no less than FIFTEEN games in a six day span starting on Wednesday and carrying into today.
This is a surprisingly busy week even BEFORE we consider the digital deluxe edition of MLB The Show launching on Friday. There's Kingdom Come: Deliverance for the heavy low-fantasy RPG, a Star War (two, actually, with extra Kit Fisto for some reason), a second attempt at a Contra revival, and even a rescue from Stadia (Gylt). Though I'm going to go with Digital Eclipse's Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, providing more than the recommend dose of both vector-based shooters and gratuitous dromedaries.
Smaller titles include strategy RPG / Vita rescue Rainbow Moon (in the same vein as Rainbow Skies), a game that'll get banned in Europe probably in Death Trick: Double Blind, and action platformer Highwater.

The continued flailing at Warner Brothers has claimed an early brand with some Switch history.
An entry on Delisted Games has found that within 60 days all Adult Swim Games titles will be removed from digital sale. Although some of the games previously published by ASG have already moved to other publishers, some developers have also confirmed that Warner has not and apparently will not take steps to move their games.

One of Japan's most prominent artists in both the manga and gaming realms has died.
The official social media for the Dragon Ball franchise confirmed tonight that Akira Toriyama, the original artist behind the series, passed away on March 1, a little more than a month before his 69th birthday. The cause of death was an acute subdural hematoma (blood on the brain).
Toriyama gained prominence in Japan in the late 1970s with his work on the Dr. Slump manga, before creating Dragon Ball - his most famous work internationally - in 1984. In the video game realm, Toriyama was the main character designer for the Dragon Quest franchise, which dovetailed into also doing character design for the seminal 1995 RPG Chrono Trigger and later the Blue Dragon games.

Nintendo's third retail release in 2024 has joined the first two in getting a demo.
A demo has gone live on the eShop for Princess Peach: Showtime ahead of the March 22 launch. The demo contains stages with Peach's Swordfighter and Patissiere costumes.

Additionally, although not confirmed by Nintendo, datamining has found evidence that Showtime was developed by Good Feel Co. This would be the developer's first Nintendo-published project since 2019's Yoshi's Crafted World, though they have self-published the eShop game Monkey Barrels and a Japan-exclusive (thus far) spiritual successor to the Konami published Goemon games in the interim.

The creators of a popular emulator of Switch software are folding their tent.
Tropic Haze LLC, creators of the popular Yuzu emulator, have settled a lawsuit filed last week by Nintendo alleging mass copyright infringement and violations of the United States's Digital Millenium Copyright Act. This follows statements that more than a million people were playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom prior to its release using Yuzu.
As part of the settlement, Tropic Haze will pay $2.4m in damages to Nintendo and will cease distribution of the emulator and its source code. They must also turn over website domains and other technical information related to the emulator to Nintendo and may not create other software that "circumvents Nintendo's technical protections" (as the same firm also contributed to the development of a popular 3DS emulator).
UPDATE 2:55pm EST: Verified developers have confirmed the deal and will be discontinuing Yuzu and their support of the 3DS emulator Citra immediately.
We should be celebrating Unicorn Overlord this week, instead we get the absolute nadir of Switch shovelware.

A couple of the more obscure games of the week are the Top Racer Collection - "Top Racer" being the Japanese name of Top Gear, which was localized by current maker of fee-to-pay RPGs Kemco - as well as a game inspired by r/wallstreetbets and proof that Games Workshop will license Warhammer 40,000 to anyone with a pulse because there's a RedDeer published one this week. Meanwhile, Japan gets to box for fitness with *checks* Hatsune Miku.

The long arm of PEGI may have whacked one of the year's biggest eShop success stories.
Reports emerged on our Discord server this morning of a UK-based chatter attempting to purchase Balatro at 1130 GMT, even going so far as to reach the point of funds being added to their eShop balance. Before the purchase completed, the game was removed.
There has been no updates from the game's developers regarding the apparent ban. Although not confirmed, it is likely that the game's content (using cards to make poker hands in a roguelike) may have run afoul of the mandatory PEGI 18+ rating for gambling in games.
UPDATE 1:00pm EST: Developer PlayStack has issued a comment on their social media (here) reiterating that they don't have an expected time of return, but the removal was apparently caused by a unilateral rating change: originally the game was assigned an 18+ rating, but following discussions with the authority (not named but presumably PEGI) were able to confirm a 3+ rating.
The patch will be out tomorrow, and not needed until 2028.

If you're hoping to get your Breaking Free or One Winged Angel on in Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line today, you'll need to do some clock fixing first.
An error first spotted by Vooks and confirmed with both the Switch and PlayStation versions of last February's rhythm release has it going to either a blank or loading screen when booted. The only fix for this is to change the date in Settings to anything but February 29.
The issue has also been observed with some EA Sports titles (including EA Sports WRC) on other consoles.

Well, that was surprising and in a way, not surprising. I believe I might have referred to a new mainline Pokemon game on Switch being announced in the Pokemon Presents as “the free space on the bingo card”, and it came to pass pretty much as expected. We do have a new Pokemon game coming to Switch, but it’s still leaving a lot of questions. Specifically, I have five.
1) If even POKEMON is punting on 2024, how completely fucked is this industry?
Right before the Pokemon Presents began, word came down from Jim Ryan (he of the rapidly approaching golden parachute) at Sony that they were laying off 8% of their gaming workforce or 900 people. Including a majority of their PSVR2 development, which goes to show: Sony will cut bait on the second attempt way faster than is sane. (See also: Vita, PlayStation). Before I finished work on Pokemon Day, current Life is Strange developer Deck Nine announced they were laying off 20% of their workforce. And then due to a corporate move, Cloud Imperium Games, makers of alleged grand space combat game/ship seller/possible Ponzi scheme Star Citizen, announced they were cutting staff. This is a company that, mind you, somehow pulled in US$140,000 THAT DAY ALONE via crowdfunding.
This year has been looking real bad for the game industry, as the pace of layoffs only seems to be accelerating as we approach the end of most fiscal years. If - Snorlax-sized if - the Switch’s successor was delayed in order to flesh out the lineup even more in 2025, that pushed back a lot of things from third party publishers with it. But a Pokemon at the end of the year plus an assumed return to form from Call of Duty seemed like a good financial note to go out on - but now the former is in 2025 and it’s still an open question what Microsoft will do or put up with for Call of Duty given it’s a not-insignificant part of why they bought ActBlizzKing in the first place.
Pokemon skipping THIS year is a warning shot. But if Call of Duty skips as well, it’s going to take a lot of the more casual money out of the market at a time when most Western or Western-exposed developers (Sony) are already afraid to hire, the rest of this year is going to be painful.
2) Was Kalos the planned site for the generation capper all along?
Although some of them (species of Pokemon) have the dreaded X-Pac Heat (poor Simisear, literally the least popular Pokemon in existence) there’s also some quite popular lines and a frickin’ Smash Bros character who aren’t available unless you use the 3DS to bring them in. - The Collector's Hopes For Scarlet and Violet, May 17, 2022
The Smash Bros. character in question is Greninja, one of the starters of Pokemon X and Y who debuted in Smash 3DS/Wii U. And it’s true: at the time of that article, none of the starter families from X/Y were available on Switch. They slowly trickled into Scarlet and Violet via limited events, then when the Indigo Disk went and gave the Smash Ultimate memorial “Everyone is here!” treatment to the starters, all three became permanently available. It sure seems like that particular group of three got held back for a reason.
Add in Scarlet and Violet clearly taking a lot of influence from the Iberian Peninsula immediately to the southwest of France, and you have a national link between S/V and Z-A. Common (although never officially confirmed) theories about Paldea include the Great Crater being created by a particularly large shot from “the ultimate weapon” that drives so much of the plot of X and Y, so this is a good chance to either prove or disprove that theory.
3) What will Z-A do for people who want to fill the Pokedex with just Switch games?
One of the things I mentioned last week when I hoped for a Legends set in Unova was that it would provide an easy excuse to include nine common species that still haven’t been playable on the Switch to this point. Eight of them were Unovan common spawns, and the ninth (a French poodle) would have an excuse to show up in a historical version of the United States.
It turns out that Kalos would be another option for those particular Pokemon to make their hybrid console debuts. Obviously Furfrou the poodle would be a native to the region, and the elemental monkeys are common spawns in the second area of X and Y you can catch Pokemon in, while Watchog shows up in areas immediately following the 6th badge and would presumably bring Patrat along for the ride. So that part of it should be covered.
As for other playable Pokemon, X and Y still have the largest regional Pokedex of any game in the series, north of 450 Pokemon. So there’s plenty of options to choose from. And that’s not accounting for them having to possibly bring in starters from other regions in order to accommodate the return of Mega Evolution. Maybe a starter trio of Treecko (which has a Mega Evolution as Sceptile), Froakie (Greninja’s old “Ash-Greninja” form being retconned into a Mega) and… why is “My World” playing?
A major benefit of Legends: Arceus allowed for all of the Sinnoh-era mythical Pokemon to be capturable in the course of normal play. A side quest gives Manaphy and Phione, save data unlocks postgame capture of Darkrai and Shaymin, and Arceus is the literal final thing you get. If that precedent holds in Z-A, we’ll get permanent access to three mythical Pokemon - DIancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion - that haven’t been distributed in ages. Diancie could fill the Manaphy role since it could be tied to the Kalos-native Carbink, Volcanion could be a S/V save bonus given its Fire/Water typing, and Hoopa… well, it could be the driver of the plot if we’re going to do a second season of “So I’m A Joltik, So What” and have the player character get isekai’d again.
4) Does the focus on Lumiose City mean we’ll see a similar gameplay structure to Arceus?
The “building a city” portion of Legends: Z-A was made quite explicit in the original trailer, and also harkens back to the 19th century Renovation of Paris. A similar concept wasn’t as explicit in the prerelease hype for Arceus, but part of the story of the game involved building up the late 19th century version of Jubilife City into a thriving city that supported the growth of Pokemon as well. So it won’t be Sim City in the way we’re thinking.
But Lumiose City in X and Y has five exits, each splitting off to very different areas. One goes out to the starting areas, one to a swamp, one to a volcanic badlands, one to coastal waters, and one to an area of ice. Coincidentally, those areas in a fashion are the same five zones we explored in Arceus - the Fieldlands, Mirelands, Coastlands, Highlands, and Icelands. With each one being accessible out of Lumiose, it sure feels like it’d be easy to implement a five environment structure here as well - as opposed to Castelia City in Unova which only has two known exits. (Which is a shame, as I hear in Castelia you can be a new man.)
It’s not obvious if we’ll see the same focus on catching Pokemon to fill out an early Pokedex, or if it’ll be more focused on battling than the original. But I do hope they maintain the most badass trainer class in franchise history: “Pokemon Wielder”.
5) How far into 2025 will it be before Z-A lands, and do we get anything in between?
Pokemon Legends: Arceus shipped 14.6m copies with a launch date of January 28, 2022. If we assume a similar launch timing for Z-A, that would put it to January 31, 2025. Given Game Freak’s usual three year cycles as of late, that seems to be the morning line favorite, especially since it was unveiled on Pokemon Day and every game unveiled on Pokemon Day has been out by the next February 27. This is a small sample size (Sun and Moon, Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet and Violet, and the expansion pass) but much like their partner Nintendo liked to have all the E3 games out by the next one when possible, they probably want to go more into detail on ZA in August and then talk about something new next year around this time if there is anything.
The question is though, has the door really been closed? In our Slack after the presentation, as we tried to figure out why they skipped Unova, John raised the possibility of something Black and White related this year. As of now, I’m doubting it: they have announced multiple games a year before (2021 with BD/SP and Arceus) and they both hit within the next 12 months.
However, a quick turnaround from Z-A to something else for holiday 2025? Not off the table now. I still think it would be an effective gap year (January/February 2025 to holiday ‘26), but the longer we go without a successor the question does need to be asked.
Will this age as badly as my predictions from last week, or is Game Freak and Pokemon Company predictable in their unpredictability? Keep it locked to Nintendo World Report for all the updates.

Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the maker of a popular Switch emulator that could have impacts far beyond just a single program.
The lawsuit, filed yesterday and discovered by Axios games writer Stephen Totilo, is against Tropic Haze LLC, the legal entity whose products include the popular Yuzu Switch emulator (as well as the popular 3DS emulator Citra). Nintendo's suit alleges the following:
Nintendo cites three different cases as precedent for the shutdown, and is seeking a jury trial. If granted and if the ruling is in Nintendo's favor, penalties are requested to include the shutdown of Yuzu, damages equal to $2500 per user + $150,000 per pirated game, and a blanket ban of the principals from Discord.

In addition to the announcement of Pokemon Legends: AZ, the Pokemon Presents provided updates and a new software announcement for the franchise.
The new announcement was Pokemon TCG Pocket, a mobile version of the Pokemon Trading Card Game that will feature a simplified version of the TCG gameplay as well as the ability to open two packs of cards per day for free. Certain packs will include "immersive" cards which feature brief nature cutscenes with the Pokemon. It will launch on mobile (iOS/Android) in 2024, and is produced in cooperation with Creatures and frequent Nintendo partner/Pokemon Masters dev DeNA.

The next main Pokemon game appears to be waiting a full three years from its predecessor.
The "one more announcement" of the Pokemon Presents was a new Pokemon Legends title. Subtitled "Z-A", the title will be developed by Game Freak and will launch simultaneously worldwide in 2025.
Z-A will be focused on the Kalos region of Pokemon X and Y, as the trailer focuses heavily on a "Lumiose City Redevelopment Plan" (with Lumiose being the hub city of Kalos). Mega Evolution, introduced in this region, will be returning in some form.
By the next time I can use that date in one of these, my legs and feet will have calmed down from this weekend's IRL grind session.

Things we missed last week: Aside from the items in the Direct that were either "out right now" or "out tomorrow" (respectively: Penny's Big Breakaway, Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!, and Pentiment + NSO updates of wildly varying quality depending on the region), Konami's Jungler was the Archives game of the week.
After 11 hours of chasing down shinies this weekend which could have gone to 16 had Mother Nature cooperated, my legs are killing me so I have to make this quick. Retail wise we have the new Shiren the Wanderer game (which Neal reviewed) and office otome Sympathy Kiss (which I did). The digital space has Star Wars: Dark Forces which we can reasonably assume will ship complete since Aspyr is NOT involved, Sunsoft and boutique publisher Red Art have teamed up for a sequel to Ufouria: The Saga called naturally Ufouria 2, and Devolver is taking us through the ages of cricket for some reason.
Lastly regarding Picross S+: It is a Switch port of the Picross e series from the 3DS, and the main thing you are buying on the eShop if you preload is the equivalent of the original Picross e. E2 - 9 (the last one, IIRC, never being released outside Japan) are the same price as listed but in the DLC section.

The game industry's mass of layoffs has led to a major update for a popular fighting game releasing in a completely broken state.
A new paid DLC for Them's Fightin' Herds added two new characters, one of whom has the ability to cause infinite unbreakable combos.
Publisher Modus Games reportedly fired the quality assurance team for TFH in December while the patch for the DLC was being prepared, according to a QA team member who was also the administrator of the game's Discord server.
