Just Dance 4 Impressions

Be the master of puppets while your friends are just dancing.

My only Just Dance experience has been the first game. My takeaway from it then was that it was a silly dancing game that was fun even though the recognition of your moves seemed wonky. Just Dance 4, coming to Wii U at the system's launch, continues that tradition of somewhat-wonky dance move recognition with fun, while adding the new Puppet Master mode.

The Puppet Master mode allows one player to select dance moves for the others to perform by using the Wii U GamePad's touch screen. It is simple, but it's entertaining, especially since the name and animation for the moves are humorous, featuring zombies, a person with a TV on their head, and more. Occasionally, you have the option to select a pose for the players to hold, and then you judge who did the best job at holding the pose. You can be somewhat diabolical and make everyone hold a pose that requires good balance.

The Wii U GamePad can also be used to select songs, so it makes for an easier way to select songs from the game's soundtrack, which includes songs like "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, and "Wild Wild West" by Will Smith.

With Just Dance games, I find it helpful to think of them as rhythm games.  As long as you move your hand in sync with the music, similar to games where you hit buttons on a guitar, you will get some points.  As you get better at actually replicating the correct range of motions, your score will hit the max.  Just Dance 3 actually did well, though you can always "cheat" by not moving your legs.  The Kinect version allows tracking only upper body as well, I think.

The puppet mode sounds pretty fun.  A good way for someone who is not physically capable of dancing to really participate.  Also good for the person who needs to cool down for a while.  If you are not used to dancing, it will make you feel like you are going to die after a couple songs.

Is there anything new other than the soundtrack that really warrants this game to be purchased?  I mean any online play?  Is there any single player campaign.  I know it is a dance game that is geared to being goofy and silly but it feels as if they are catering to putting out this series just put in decent songs... (I actually dislike the soundtrack compared to last games) all just to sell out.  Granted all games sell to make money but this to me screams sell out.  Doesn't anyone think that this series is now in it only for the money?

Were there any major changes between any of the Just Dance games?

Honestly Neal No.  In my honest opinion it seems like the dance genre is just staying the same with emphasis on new moves and songs but no true improvement in terms of actual improvements like a single player experience, where the hell is my online multiplayer, where the hell is my j-pop songs, and sadly people will just buy it because it has music they like.  In short Just Dance 4 is the new madden series.
