TalkBack / Re: More Spin-Off Titles Coming to Wii U in 2015, Says Miyamoto
« on: November 04, 2014, 05:48:48 PM »
"I also feel that Nintendo now makes the mistaken assumption that the IP is the selling point instead of the gameplay."

Ian, you then list Nintendo Land as a launch title that tries to sell itself on its IP...  but the whole point of Land was that the gameplay was all new, made specifically w/ GamePad in mind. Sure the clothes looked like recognizable characters, but the meat of the game was all about mechanics and control. Maybe they could have sold it better, yeah. But they still realize their strength is in compelling experiences unavailable anywhere else.

Interesting that this will be hitting the Wii U VC. But you know I'm always down for some more SMB2. Some amazing BOSS FIGHTs in there. (Okay, they're not the best part, but the fact that the original took place inside a BOOK...  pretty neat.) #subliminal

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a large part of the reason Nintendo couldn't implement gay relationships/marriage is because gay marriage isn't even legal in all 50 fifty states, not to mention certain other countries? Although the social issue is unavoidable, it seems to me this was always more of a legal issue.

TalkBack / Re: February Club Nintendo Rewards Revealed

Oh man, might have to grab PictoBits. My wife already has it on her DSi, where I played most of it, but would love to have on my own system, if only for the music. So worth it if you haven't played it before.

For now I'm still really enjoying last month's DSiWare offering, Spin Six. Lots of hidden puzzle gems on that store. BTW: Did you know that eye crust is made of hardened proteins?

TalkBack / Re: Swapnote, Flipnote 3D Discontinued
« on: November 01, 2013, 10:58:34 AM »
Where does it say anything about Flipnote 3D? The message I read mentions only Swapnote. This is regrettable, as SN was a cool little service, but honestly I hadn't opened it in months so I'm not too bummed.

Flipnote 3D, on the other hand.... I really hope that still comes out.

Wii Party U is fun, y'all. If you have the capacity for game-gatherings, give it a go. There's less Solo content, it seems, but even then it's fairly amusing.

TalkBack / Re: KnapNok Games Working On Game With Nifflas
« on: August 03, 2013, 02:03:04 PM »
Am I the only one super-psyched for this? No? Ooh I'd love to see what Nifflas could do on Wii U. NightSky was a fave experience on 3DS last year. Would love to see a similarly atmospheric game that had you plug in headphones to the GamePad for some weird audio immersion experiment... or something.

I so want this game. Just played a bit o' Park Patrol to rekindle the Chibi flames. They still burn...

If you were at all interested in this game before the review, I implore you to still check it out. Mileage may vary, but so far I'm loving the humor and differing styles of play. Read some other reviews, too....  this is definitely on the low end of the spectrum, with others getting a kick out of it.

Wow, y'all are cold. I can't wait for this game. Don't care for the oddly-toned ad campaign, but there's something about the WarioWare bunch that keeps me coming back. And that measuring game, aka Chris Kohler's E3 Game of 2011, is in here!! Come on, people!

« on: May 01, 2013, 03:45:31 PM »
People complain about too much Mario, but when the range and quality of experience is as great as what's found in 3D Land (I'm with J.P. on this one...   fantastic game, under-appreciated) and NSMB2 (my most-played 3DS game: Coin Rush + StreetPassin' had me getting 1,000,000 coins and still going), then I'm okay with Mr. Video having his face on as many games as they want.

TalkBack / Re: Paper Mario: Sticker Star - Review Revisit
« on: April 30, 2013, 05:03:02 PM »
Man, I disagree with the general sentiment here. I found Sticker Star a delight... each environment held something new to see, the papercraft aspect of the world and battles was well done and creative, and it really popped on the 3DS screen. And the Things! They're funny! I guess some of the bosses were obtuse, but finding a new weird mundane object and seeing what it did in battle was a highlight. Most importantly: the special stickers shimmered when you tilted the system around. It's like a magic show in my hands.

(Also: I'm with MagicCow64 on this one.... SPM is far under-rated.)

One day people will look back, see how Nintendo Land was relatively ignored and dismissed by early adopters, and weep great tears of shame on behalf of their ancestors.

Was I the only one who, without even thinking about it, read the whole thing in his voice?

Nope. Did the same thing. And I wish to do it more... make it so, Mr. Leahy!

Though I can see how this wouldn't be everybody's cuppa tea, I'm really enjoying it. The sense of speed and depth is really accentuated by the 3D, and some of the extra rocks/balls change up the experience a lot in my opinion. (That Nesting Doll is tough -- haven't landed her at the bottom once yet.) At $3 it's an easy recommendation from me.

What Retro Dockades said.

But otherwise, I'm still really enjoying it. Don't care too much about the leaderboard issues, as dealing with the levels on their own terms is challenging/stimulating enough for me.

TalkBack / Re: Puddle Review
« on: February 09, 2013, 05:18:08 PM »
To echo Neal, this was just like NightSky for me, too....  I fully expected to be disappointed due to mediocre reviews, but was wow'ed by its style and fun, innovative, unexpected challenge. I'm a huge Fluidity fan, but I really really liked Puddle too. Totally different experiences.

Iwata-era Nintendo's attitude is that you give them some very specific feature and say "this is what you innovate with".  It didn't work on the DS or the Wii and isn't working yet on the 3DS or Wii U.

I guess "didn't work" is a subjective term. For me, the Wii and DS re-energized my interest in gaming. For the 100+ million people that bought each system, I imagine a fair ratio of them thought it was okay. While I'm not blind to the possibility of Wii U faltering in the market, I'm fine with being patient and seeing how inventive devs see fit to use the tools given.

Anyway, the touchscreen aspect is way less interesting to me than the integrated gyro, making possible the kind of 360 degree game-world as seen flying Samus' ship in Metroid Blast and the scanner in ZombiU. Maybe once the panorama view thing gets out there, people will understand the utility of viewing a game environment beyond the confines of the TV screen.

For some reason I've heard good things about Revenge of the Gator...  even though the pinball "physics" are a bit loosey-goosey, I'd gladly add this to my virtual table collection.

Ditto Dr. Metts. Discounted retail downloads are so key. Or at least Sale Periods where retail downloads are marked-down to reinvigorate older games. I'm no fan of the de-valuing of games a la iOS marketplace (if that's even a thing or more a myth) but I feel like differentiating eShop retail games by price has to happen.

TalkBack / Re: Fluidity: Spin Cycle Review
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:10:27 AM »
I agree with StrawHatChopper and accc. I loved Fluidity on WiiWare but, as neat as the exploration was, I found it frustrating at times and got tired of progressing over the same early landscapes over and over. I really like the tighter design here, and it allows a kind of score-attack that wasn't in the WiiWare game. And the visuals are more detailed and interesting, with more moving parts and cute nods to classic fairytales and other familiar themes. Really hooked into this one right now.
