@Adrock.  Nintendo has $11.6B in cash and $2.0B in debt.  That would be good for just over 38 years of $250M annual loss, but no $6B additional loss.  That's why I laugh when people think Nintendo can't compete with Sony/Microsoft.  It's even sillier because in the technology industry, high quality/new tech typically drives the market.  I.E. make a good quality product the market will pay the price(within reason).  Not make the cheapest thing possible and hope to not lose money.  You've already lost in the market if you feel you can't match basic technology that is industry standard.

But the more important thing is we are the few Nintendo fans left (based on sales).  If Nintendo continues their current trajectory, will anybody care what they are doing with video games in 10 years (even if they are still around)?

Sengoku Basara 4 takes the top spot putting Kirby Triple Deluxe and Pazudora Z in to second and third, respectively. Oddly, the Attack On Titan 3DS game is back in the top 10 at the eighth position; probably due to some discount, promotion, new shipment, or new content.

I don't think any console or handheld will reach Wii or DS numbers ever again.
I don't think anyone thought any system would outsell the PS2 at 150 million, and then the DS did. The Wii is lower at just barely over 100 million, I think that will be reached by some future systems.

It won't be the Wii U though, that's for sure. PS4 is probably the only one right now with that kind of potential on the console front. I expect the 3DS to surpass 100 million when all is said and done.

Wow. You lot are generous on the PS4/XB1 totals. I don't think either will even get moderately close to those totals. This industry is in a crux state-of-mind - difficult situations being created because of the fallout of third parties. An industry run only by EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and Take Two definitely will not create that many consoles sold over their respective lifetimes.

With that said, I'd say Sony gets very lucky and hits 35 to 40 million sold, and Microsoft will net anywhere between 20 to 30. Nintendo, as long as their marketing can get their act together, could sell about 20 million when it's all said and done.

We're not living in the days of a vast amount of third parties producing killer content everywhere one looks. Those days are long over...thanks to the four big boys. :/

I think the Wii and DS numbers benefit from the timing where this big wave of mainstream/casual gamers was finding an interest in videogames but did not yet have technology that interested them that could play games besides dedicated game systems.  Now they have smartphones and tablets and that's enough to scratch their gaming itch.  The console/handheld videogame market won't ever attract an audience like that again because that audience doesn't really want to own a videogame system, they just didn't really have a choice in 2006.

I think the dedicated videogame system market will become more and more of an enthusiast market, for those that don't find the shallow distractions of smartphone games to be sufficient to their gaming needs.  But that audience is too small to provide Wii/DS style numbers or support the huge budgets we're seeing now.  Everything will shrink.

The Nintendo 3DS crosses the 15 million mark this week as dueling mecha and demon hunters take the top two spots. It is likely this will be the last we will see of Super Mario 3D World in the top 20.

It's still about a 30% attach rate...which is technically good.

Actually Nintendo's own official numbers had 3D World at 590k at the end of December for Japan.  You have to remember these charts don't include digital sales which Nintendo does when it combines sales in their reports.

It's selling well on a console no one is buying.  It's the sort of game the people would buy if they already owned the system but it isn't enough to convince them to buy the system.

Which is a shame, because I think it's the best Mario game ever made (maybe besides Super Mario 64).

Well the advantage to Mario games is they have long legs.  So if Nintendo does find a way to vastly improve Wii U sales in the future with different software, 3D World will still benefit from these later sales as well because people will buy it once they eventually get a Wii U, even if right now 3D World alone isn't enough for many to make a purchase.

I wouldn't be surprised if in May when Mario Kart gives the system a sales bump, 3D World will get a nice bump in the sales chart as well.

Followed by that SSB bump as well, it must be nice to have ever green software.

Now if only Nintendo could make more games and less of them related to Mario to fill in those gaps.

3DS not really doing spectacularly compared to past weeks/months, but then again it's January.

As of today, the only upcoming retail release from a third party publisher on Wii U in japan is Hyrule Warriors. That's kind of insane, even for a Nintendo console.
