TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition Unboxing
« on: February 11, 2016, 04:48:06 PM »
Thanks Kimberly, for doing an unboxing video.  I wasn't clear from the video but it looks like the images, that this does come with a physical copy of the game and both versions are on one 3DS cart, is that correct?

Also, I have to reiterate the previous two people's comments.  I'm incredibly frustrated with Nintendo for making this version impossible to pre-order/purchase.  I've been trying to pre-order it for 2 months (or longer) and it's been completely sold out and never once came back in stock.  Should we expect them to have any released to the general public?  Or are we all SOL if we weren't lucky enough to pre-order it back in October/November?

Sonic in Smash .... just AWESOME!  He looked very fun to play, I can't wait to try him out.  If the game is delayed, hopefully it's not more than a couple of weeks.

Yeah your "nephew" ... sure .......  I know how that is.  I feel like if I were to go to this, I'd be one of the oldest people there (and I'm only 23).  But I wouldn't be surprised to see some older players.  I mean, it's not like the majority of people that would get online and find out about this event would be 5 year old kids.

I might try to go to one of these if there is a TRU close by that's promoting this event.  If not, it's not that big of a deal, I should be able to get a Manaphy if I ever decide to play through Pokemon Ranger :P

I'm surprised more people didn't comment on this and frankly it is something that people should be concerned about.  Honestly a lot of people didn't even know Madden 08 came out for the regular Xbox and yet it OUTSOLD the Wii version.  On a system that is the hottest thing out there and already has a user base in America of around 4 million.

This troubles me, because sports is a huge draw for many consumers and especially casual gamers.  And Nintendo has struggled with sports titles and that definitely factors into struggling with 3rd party support.

If EA can't even sell Madden (the biggest sports franchise) to the biggest user base of new consoles (the Wii), then what makes any other 3rd party feel like they would be successful with any of their sports franchises?  The lack of 3rd party support is still a concern for Nintendo and this doesn't help at all.

This news is rather troublesome...

TalkBack / RE:No NWR Metroid Review Today or Soon
« on: August 29, 2007, 02:16:42 PM »
I can understand the staff at NWR being frustrated that they weren't able to get an early copy of Metroid Prime 3.  But the people talking about Nintendo being cocky or jerks for not sending out early reviewable copies of the game are being ridiculous.

And since it appears that NWR was not the ONLY site that missed out on getting an early copy of the game, I don't think it's anything personal to NWR and they shouldn't be offended or feel slighted.

There may be a possibility that the marketing relocation had something to do with this.  I'm not sure who NWR works with when talking to Nintendo and getting early copies of games.  But if it has anything to do with the marketing department / PR department than this definitely could have played a factor.

Overall, I hope that NWR doesn't take this incident and reflect on it while writing up their review.  Although it's unfortunate, NWR should know that their audience won't be angry at them or stop going to this site just because they didn't have a MP3 review on day one.

Metroid Prime 3 is a great game, take your time and enjoy it.  Then get that review to us when you've been able to soak it all up and enjoy the game.

« on: August 28, 2007, 02:10:06 PM »
I'm trying to determine if this game will be worth buying if I already own GNT 3 & 4 on GameCube.  I know it's not a port of GNT 3 or of Shippuden Ex.  I guess it depends on how many characters are available, how many different modes / features the game has, and how the controls / gameplay shape up.

I know there will be less characters than GNT 4, but if there's less playable characters than say Clash of the Ninja 2, I'd be pretty dissappointed.

It'll be interesting to see more impressions / reviews of this game when it comes out.

Even though I much prefer the Japanese voices, the English voices wouldn't be enough to stop me from buying a GOOD game (if it's worth getting).

I can't wait to pick up Super Metroid when it hits the VC in the next couple of weeks!  It's the most obvious VC purchase for me since Punch-Out came out a couple months ago.  I never owned Super Metroid but I have played through it before.  The game is unbelievably good!

With Metroid Prime 3: Corruption coming out on MONDAY August 27th.  And VC titles being released every Monday.  If I were a betting man, I think I'd put my money on Super Metroid coming out on Monday, August 27th.

I also second (or third) the GBA / DS remake of Metroid 2.  Metroid 2 is actually the first Metroid game I beat and it really added a lot of awesome stuff to the series.  The Spider-ball, space jump, etc.  Along with the creepy Metroid evolutions.

I would almost take a remake of Metroid 2 over a new 2-D Metroid title (Metroid Dread anyone?).  Either one I'd buy immediately.

Hahaha ..... no.

For some reason, every once in awhile when I go to reply to a topic, I hit reply and it doesn't bring up the text box.  And instead just posts a blank message for me.  I don't know if it's a rare issue with the site, the web browser (Fire Fox) or what?  But it has happened a few times before.

Anyways, I was in the middle of editing my post, when I got an important phone call and was away from the computer for almost an hour.

My thoughts are above ^

« on: May 09, 2007, 01:42:19 PM »
Wow I didn't really see this coming, although I probably should have.  As Square-Enix definitely likes to cash in on their previous success.  I think it's inevitable that Final Fantasy 5 and 6 will now also be remade in 3-D in the next year or two and released on the DS.

I don't see that as a bad thing either.  I mean, I was really excited when they released FF 4 - 6 on the GBA and bought them all.  And I also picked up FF 3 on the DS.  They're all great games and they're all worth the money.  Hopefully Square will be adding more than just the upgraded visuals to really persuade people who already picked up the GBA versions to go back and buy the upgraded DS versions.

This also leads to the inevitable question.... After they remake 4 - 6, would they actually consider remaking or re-releasing FF 7 on the DS?  It would definitely be a huge seller.  But I'll be alright even if they don't remake it.  At this point I wouldn't mind if they left that series alone for awhile.

Oh yeah ... and we can't forget about Chrono Trigger.  I sent that question into the mailbag here at PGC / NWR a few months back.  I would have a very hard time believing Square wouldn't be interested in re-releasing Chrono Trigger in some format.  Either through the dying GBA, the DS, or a less likely option over to the VC.

TalkBack / RE:The NWR Mailbag Talkback Thread
« on: April 30, 2007, 07:35:46 PM »
I was very interested by the last letter in this edition of the Mailbag.  I can actually relate to what this person was saying.  Especially regarding the excitment of the titles that were out around the launch times.

I have noticed that there have been several people I know that say they NEVER really play their Wii since Zelda: TP.

I myself have at times, stopped playing my Wii for several weeks at a time.

I have also noticed that the Wii's initial launch window games seem to be shallow or lack depth.  Some may even see them as Tech Demoes.  Although that's certainly not a good thing, I relate this to the DS launch.  That had several games that seemed to be rather short, many that seemed gimmicky, and plenty that didn't really know how to utilize the DS to its fullest.  I believe the same will be the case for the Wii eventually and that we haven't even scratched the surface of what the system and controller setup is capable of.

I am amazed that the Wii is selling out like crazy.  Because for the past decade that hasn't been the case for Nintendo systems.  But I'm not completely shocked, considering they've had a smart game plan and their competition hasn't been very impressive (although the 360 is doing a decent job).

It's funny that Pokemon rarely seems as big as franchises like Mario, Zelda, Halo, or GTA.  And yet it's numbers either beat or at least compete with all the big boys.

I'd be very surprised if Pokemon Diamond / Pearl weren't in the Top 5 sales for the year.  And that's impressive considering the Big Name games that'll be out this year.

Ages - I love your quote from Billy Madison.  Funniest Movie ever!

NOOOOOO I hate preorders.  Look, this is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises.  While EB and GS may sell out, almost no other place will, because they actually order enough.  The main two stores that offer presales, are GS and EB, and when popular games come out, they intentionally order fewer copies than they know they need, to create an artificial shortage to encourage more preordering next time.  It's a dirty trick, and if the game is going to have several printings, there's no reason to even consider preordering it.

However, if the game looks like it will have few printings, like PW:AA and Trauma Center, it might be worth it, but really, there's no reason to, other than in those circumstances.

I'm gonna take a wild stab in the dark and assume that you've never actually worked for either of these companies.

Being that I have, I can safely say that GS or EB never purposely order a shortage of games in order to create an artificial shortage / hype for a game.

GameStops and EB Games tend to sell out more frequently than other stores for two main reasons.  First, they're specifically a video game store that pretty much ONLY sells games.  Because of this, they tend to be the first option for several customers because where's the best place to pick up a new game?  How about the game store!

The second reason, is that although these game stores are very popular with new hot titles they are always very small stores and therefore receive much smaller shipments than what a Walmart would receive.  Look at the size of most GS and EB stores, they're tiny in comparison to stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, Target, etc.

It has nothing to do with the stores purposely ordering limited quantities in order to increase demand.

It's definitely a Jurassic Takeover!

Sonic Rush for the DS was a pretty fun game I thought.  So hopefully they'll continue to make another good one with this game.

Unfortunately, it does seem like Sega isn't being too creative with "robots, dinosaurs, and robot dinosaurs", along with the original being "Sonic Rush" and the 3-D Dreamcast game "Sonic Adventure".  Now we have "Sonic Rush Adventure" .... wonder how long that took them.

Reminds me of the Simpsons with the Mad TV brainstorming session.  They were like *After several hours of brainstorming* "Why don't we call it 'Everyone Hates Raymond' ." .... haha

TalkBack / RE:Wii Shortage May 'Last for Some Time'
« on: April 11, 2007, 04:03:38 PM »
I agree, I think it's hard to say there are shortages when Wii sales numbers average out to be over $1 million per month since it's release in November.

Demand is just insane.  That's all there is to it.

Regarding the transportation methods, shipping by boat makes perfect sense.  As another forum member mentioned, transportation is not the problem.  It's the amount of systems that Nintendo can manufacture and the incredible demand for the system.  It doesn't make any sense for Nintendo, as a business that wants to make as much profit as possible, would want to use a more expensive method of shipping (by plane) when there is literally no need for it.  It's like "Hey Nintendo, do you want to spend more money on shipping or reduce your expenses and make more profit by shipping via boat?" ... It's really a no-brainer.

Just to put the demand in perspective, I work in retail that sells electronics (games).  And day in and day out we get so many calls asking if we have any Wii's in.  When we do get them in, they sell immediately.  Recently we actually got a decently large shipment of 15.  It took us less than 24 hours to sell through all of them (and considering we were probably closed for at least 10 of those hours, that's pretty incredible.

To put that in perspective, we'll probably sell one to two PS3 / 360s in a week's time.

As far as how long it'll be before you can just casually walk into a store and buy one.  I have no idea.  When the system first came out, I figured it'd probably be around mid-to-late January before you'd be able to pick one up.  I figured it was all Christmas hype.  But meanwhile, while 360 and PS3 sales have slowed down after Christmas.  The Wii continues to sell at an incredible pace.  One might not be able to casually walk in and get a Wii until sometime during the summer.  If it doesn't happen then, then don't expect to be able to walk in and buy a Wii on any day until sometime in 2008.

If that does occur and the demand is this constant throughout all of 2007, then there's absolutely no question in my mind that Nintendo and the Wii will easily surpass the 360 in total sales numbers by the end of the year.

I think TYP did a very good job reviewing this game.  I think it's funny that someone was insinuating that NWR no longer writes positive reviews due to some potentially questionable Wii reviews.

The review is everything I expected from this game.  A game that's going to be great and it's going to be a lot of fun.  But it's NOT the game of the year and it's not the best game we'll see on Wii this year.  And yet, it's going to be damn fun and it'll hopefully help tide us over until the big guns arrive towards the end of the year.  And I welcome a game of this calibur at this time of the year when normally the game industry is so slow.

Great job on the review TYP and keep up the good work!

.... A little side note though.  You might want to put a little notice / disclaimer on the top of your review mentioning that the missing spaces are hidden words that may be spoilers.

I think it's pretty neat how you set the review up with spoilers but change the text for all the people who don't want to read any of it.

However, with that being said, a lot of us readers at PGC ...errr NWR are definitely computer savvy and understand that when they see a blank spaces in the review that it means that if you highlight it you'll be able to read potential spoilers.

However, I imagine there's a lot of people out there that do read this site who are either quite young or just not all that computer savvy and could be confused when attempting to read the review.  Some that might not understand why there are blank spaces throughout the review.  And how sentences don't seem to quite finish themselves.

Anyways, that's just my opinion / constructive criticism.  And maybe you did have a notice that mentioned the blank text being spoilers and I just missed it.

Anyways, great review and I can't wait to start playing the game next week.

Happy 8th Birthday PlanetN2000/PGC/NWR!   It's hard to believe it's been 8 years since that crazy Flash Animation Intro with Mario and the Earth.  Crazy enough that I've been through it all with you guys for the past 8 years, yet probably wouldn't be recognized on the message boards (which I didn't join until quite a few years later).  Nowadays and in years past there have been several Nintendo and videogame websites available to surf.  Yet you guys stood out to me and remain one of the only sites I have continued to go to all these years.  I think it was the fact that you constantly updated your site during the day unlike newspapers or larger web sites that have a specific cutoff / publishing time.  With you guys I didn't have to wait until like 8:00 or 9:00pm in the evening just to get my gaming news.  I'd find out about new stuff much earlier in the day.  And I really loved that about you guys.  Your solid reviews, constant mail-bag updates, clever writing, Editorials and Rumormill (long live Louie teh Cat) separated you from several other sites and kept me interested and coming back each day for more.  In the years, we've all grown and changed but you've stayed consistent and continued to work hard and be unique.  Your Radio-Free Nintendo podcasts have become a great new addition to your site and I look forward to great new content in the future.

Congratulations on making it to 8 years old, during an era where so many .COM businesses / sites went under.  I think your hard work, fresh style, and excellent content has led you to this point.

Here's to another 8 years and then some! To the staff, keep up the great work!  I think I can speak for everyone when I say we really do appreciate the time and effort you guys take to giving us our Nintendo news, reviews, and other content.  Thanks again for 8 glorious years!

- Jome20 ~ Jeff

PS: Do you still have that old Flash Animation that you guys used to start the PlanetN2000 site with?  I'd LOVE to see it again for old times sake!

It is kinda funny that Tomy would specifically blame Nintendo for their lack of sales.  I find this pretty amusing.  But I won't be laughing if Tomy is seriously upset about this and ends up pulling their support for Nintendo and takes away their Naruto games.  The Naruto fighting games are awesome, especially the 3rd and fourth one.  I can't wait for the fifth one which presumably will be on the Wii.

Any news about Nintendo getting more 3rd party support is a great thing.  And Guitar Hero is one of the best party games around.  Also it does a very good job of allowing lots of non-gamers to play the game.  Something the Wii has also focused on.  With that in mind, it seems to be a perfect match.

TalkBack / RE:IMPRESSIONS: Diddy Kong Racing DS
« on: January 30, 2007, 05:39:40 PM »
*Could contain Spoilers of the Game .... I have it and here are my Impressions / Differences of the DS Game*

I've been able to play through a portion of this game as well.  And I've definitely had fun with the game but Steven is right when he talks about some of the negative touch screen aspects.  The 2nd run through each course involves popping balloons with the stylus and grabbing coins by sliding the coin into your coin bag that's in the bottom right corner of the bottom screen.  You have to tap the coin and then slide it into your "bag".  If you just tap it you won't get credit for the coin.  And if you slide it towards your bag but release too soon you'll lose the coin and it'll revert to its original location.  It's fairly fun to pop the balloons but it's not as fun as racing for the silver coins.  Also, the biggest inconvenience about this mode is the way the camera works.  You're on a constant rail and you must slide your stylus around to look up, down, left, right, etc.  The control isn't very good and makes looking around for all the balloons frustrating.  You may slide the camera to look one way then get stuck in that viewpoint and miss a whole bunch of other balloons.

Other things worth noting, Banjo and Conker have been replaced by Dixie and Tiny Kong.  There are 8 original characters to choose from.  Pipsy the mouse, Tiptup the Turtle, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Timber the Tiger, Bumper the Badger, and Krunch the Kremling.  There appear to be 4 unlockable characters.  I remember the two unlockable characters in the original Diddy Kong Racing being Drumstick the Rooster, and TT the Time Clock.  Well TT is definitely in the game, and I assume Drumstick is one of the other secret characters.  Since the original game only had 10 total characters and there appears to be 12 available spots, there is supposedly two new characters.  If I manage to unlock them I'll let ya know who they are.

Some other new things in this game that weren't in the original.  When you get one of the keys for TT, you enter the locked door and TT tells you to draw a race track with the stylus.  They force you to draw the path / course that they want, and then you race TT in a cloud stage / race track.  He also doesn't seem to be nearly as fast as he used to be, but I'm not sure since I have yet to unlock him and it's been several years since I played the original game.

There are some other challenges that Taj gives you that weren't in the original.  For example, one has you driving around the Island and blowing out torches in caves via the DS speaker.

Obviously the coins and upgrades are new to the series but Steven already mentioned this.

Another new aspect of the game is after you beat the boss of each area twice, you then can challenge them for a 3rd time.  When you do this, you have to direct your driver by drawing a path for him to take.  This reminds me of Kirby's Kanvas Curse except it's a bird's eye view of your driver.  If you can beat the boss a 3rd time you earn 100 coins which helps you buy upgrades rather quickly.  However, it's pretty difficult to beat the bosses this way so you might just be better off collecting money in other areas of the game.

At this point I've played through 3 of the 5 "worlds" of the game.  I have yet to play any multiplayer or online play.  Mainly because the game isn't officially mine and I don't want to link the game to my system and get in trouble for it.

Anyways, if anyone has any questions about the single player game or differences, etc ... I'll do my best to answer your questions.

TalkBack / RE: REVIEWS: Rayman Raving Rabbids
« on: December 30, 2006, 06:25:34 PM »
I personally think this game received a score a little lower than it deserves.  I myself bought this game at launch and have actually played it more than any of my other Wii game.  I personally think this is the 2nd best launch game next to Zelda.  Sure it's a bummer that you can't do multiplayer right away.  But me and my roommates just took turns going through the single-player mode.  And we had a lot of fun doing that.  Play a game and pass the controller down.  I don't see much of a difference in doing that through the single player, or playing multiplayer where you often have to do pretty much the same thing.

Also I will be very interested to see how you guys score Wario Ware.  As MUCH of the multiplayer in Wario Ware (if not all) involves passing the remote around to other players.  It's pretty much the same thing in Rayman and guess what it's still fun as hell.

I'm at least glad that you guys weren't ignorant in your review like another review I read.  Which gave Rayman a significantly lower score because the single player wasn't a platformer.  That just boggles my mind!  That's like giving Mario Party a low score because it's not a Mario Platformer.  Whoever was writing that review should have been fired!  The single-player is short but it's damn fun.  And I took this game the way it was meant to be taken.  As a mini-game / party-game.  I didn't expect to play the next Rayman 2 because I knew that's not what this game was about.  And overall I've had a great time playing it over the past month or so.

Now I'm not saying Rayman should have scored a 9.0, but I do think a 6.5 is too low and that it most likely deserves a 7.5 - 8.0.

I work at a popular game store and we've been sold out of both for awhile.  Nintendo had a very successful holiday season.  It's just sad that Nintendo could actually be selling WAY more if they could just manufacture the systems quicker.  I've had to send well over a hundred people away looking for Wiis just in the past couple of days at my store alone.  It's most likely the same anywhere across the country.

I am very interested to see how the demand is come late January / early February.  Because right now there's still a ton of people still looking for their Christmas present.  Come February it'll just be all the people that TRULY want one.  If it's still selling out like crazy past February then Nintendo has really hit the jackpot with their new systems.

TalkBack / RE:Record Wii and DS Sales in Europe
« on: December 16, 2006, 12:51:45 PM »
Is Nintendo really taking over?  Or are these sales just grossly inflated due to the high-demand of "hot items" during the holiday season?

The way things are going right now I think Nintendo will become #1 again in both the handheld and the home console market again this generation.  A couple things need to happen, 1) They need to start getting more systems out there.  There is such a high demand for them right now that I think if there was another million units out there they would also sell completely out.  And #2) The first four or five months of 2007 are going to be very important.  There's Wario Ware and Wii Play coming out but there's not a ton of games listed for Wii to come out January through March.  Hopefully this is where Metroid Prime 3 and possibly Super Paper Mario could fill the gaps in the earlier months.  And then Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl should help towards the 2nd half of 2007.  If Nintendo can keep a good amount of games coming out, both for the Wii and the VC they very well may take #1 worldwide.

Knowing my luck my DSL will crack the next day after my warranty ends.  I have a friend that worked for Nintendo while they were shipping out the DS Lite and he told me that ALL models will eventually have this problem.  There was a design flaw or something.  Could be planned obsolescence.  I really wouldn't want to have to buy a 3rd DS.  But of course it's a pain in the butt to send your system in to Nintendo to be repaired / replaced.
