TalkBack / Yo-Kai Watch - NYCC Hands-On Preview
« on: October 18, 2015, 04:00:10 PM »

It’s demons vs demons in this kid-friendly adventure! Wait… what?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/41331/yo-kai-watch-nycc-hands-on-preview

You’re just a sleepy little kid in a sleepy little town. Nothing could possibly go wrong today. OH MAN, IS THAT A GHOST?! Well, kind of. It’s a demon. And they’re here to tell you about the amazing world of Yokai. You are in possession of the Yokai Watch, an incredible device that allows you to see, battle and capture demons in the world. It’s up to you to make sure these demons don’t infect those around them with undesirable attributes like laziness, constant hunger or depression.

In the demo I played you were unable to catch any demons, or Yokai, you fought but you were provided with a team or two to combat those in front of you. The combat system was pretty straightforward. You can choose which three of your six Yokai will do battle against the three in front of you. They will all deal damage automatically every couple of seconds and you can activate their special abilities individually. You’ll need to tap, spin and trace your way through the activation. Once activated, these abilities can heal your team or inflict massive damage on the enemies.

While there were none in the demo, I was told that there were evolutions in the game. At a certain point the demons on your team could grow into bigger and more powerful demons. There also seemed to be a lot more to the game than the small town that you ran through.

Watch out for Yo-Kai Watch, dropping into your 3DS later this year. And if you can’t wait, there is an anime adaptation airing currently.

TalkBack / Final Fantasy Explorers - NYCC Hands-On Preview

Dungeon crawling with more than a few familiar faces.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/41330/final-fantasy-explorers-nycc-hands-on-preview

Where to start and where to begin? This looks like an interesting new direction for the Final Fantasy franchise but takes cues from so many other familiar games.

The game sounds pretty simple; your character adventures out into countless dungeons looking for resources to further their progress in the game. Whether you’re looking for new summons or a new set of armor, all resources can be found in the dungeons. But, as I’m sure you can guess, these dungeons are filled to the brim with classic Final Fantasy baddies just waiting to take a bite out of you. At the end of every dungeon lies a boss in waiting as well. These bosses have also been ripped out of Final Fantasy lore, like Ifrit.

While combating the hordes before you there are several actions that you can take, depending on your class. White mages can heal, Monks can deal out some massive damage and Dragoons can do their trademark jump. You can explore on your own or with a party of four in both local and online play. Depending on your style of play, you may need to think carefully about your class. But fear not, even when you play alone you can summon monsters to heal and fight with you. If you ever feel like crawling through an old dungeon, have no fear. The layouts will change each time you enter, although the baddies will usually stay the same.

There are definitely some parts of this game that feel to familiar to me, though. Collecting fragments of defeated monsters feels a lot like, well, Monster Hunter. But it looks different enough that this shouldn’t bog anyone down. The style and combat of the game feel reminiscent of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, which is welcome to fans of the series, like myself. Whether or not you’ve played either of the previously mentioned games you should still have fun with the Final Fantasy Explorers.

There is a new mechanic introduced that allows you to take the form of protagonist of yore. After battling your way through a horde or two you can hit a button that will allow you to transform into the likes of Squall from Final Fantasy 8 or Cloud of the infamous Final Fantasy 7. While transformed you can wail on enemies with some seriously boosted stats and attire to match.

The game was a lot of fun for me, as a fan of dungeon crawlers. There was enough of a mix up in areas and enemies that I was engaged. The combat style and collection aspects were engaging as well. Transforming into old heroes was just the icing on the cake. Look out for Final Fantasy Explorers on the 3DS in a few months!

TalkBack / Monster Hunter 4 Director Hints at North American New 3DS Launch
« on: November 05, 2014, 04:08:24 AM »

If Capcom’s next western release of Monster Hunter happens to be New 3DS compatible, here’s how it would work.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38909/monster-hunter-4-director-hints-at-north-american-new-3ds-launch

The C-stick would add the most to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in North America if it were to be New 3DS compatible, according to Director Kaname Fujioka. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is currently set for an early 2015 release in North America.

“I think the biggest change, if it come to the new 3DS, should it come out in your region, the C-stick makes a really big difference. It allows you to have direct control over the camera as well as the ZL and ZR buttons,” Fujioka detailed.  “These are things that were part of the Circle Pad Pro. But it was kind of nice to have the in one place.  It gives you the freedom and it allows you, if you used to have the D-pad for camera control, you can remove that and put something else there. It should make it a little more user friendly depending on your play style. It may make it a little easier to use.”

You can read more about Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and our interview with Fujioka in our preview  as well.

TalkBack / Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Preview
« on: November 03, 2014, 06:24:32 AM »

MH4U looks the be the biggest and best Monster Hunter yet!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/38910/monster-hunter-4-ultimate-preview

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, due out in early 2015 in North America, is shaping up to be the most impressive Monster Hunter yet. With all of the new additions to the gameplay and the countless new monsters,  it looks be leaps and bounds better than Monster Hunter 3. We were able to talk to the game’s director, Kaname Fujioka,  back at New York Comic Con. “The core of Monster Hunter is not going to change,” Fujioka told us. “It is action and communication. Still is an action game, still has to focus on communication. If we change either of those, it’s not Monster Hunter anymore. We have to find a way to preserve those aspects and still find a way to change and evolve.”  From what we’ve seen so far it looks like they’re practicing what they preach.

The usual beloved weapons will be coming back, along with two new weapons, the Insect Glaive and the Charge Blade. The Insect Glaive will be for more technical players, from the sound of it.  “We started thinking about who the hunters are and what they actually do. It’s about interacting with living things,” Fujioka said about the development of the new weapon. “In the case of most hunting, it’s about killing them. But we thought it could be about something else. What if you actually worked with some creature that was involved with the weapon? That’s how the idea was generated to have the insect as something you would use to your advantage.” The Insect Glaive also plays nice with the new jump mechanic, allowing players to jump at any time, something unique to the weapon.

On the other hand, the Charge Blade seems to more of a fun run-and-slash weapon. “We knew that people really liked to see these weapons that had sort of a gimmickry to them, they could transform or move or combine. We know people like those – we like those!” Fujioka said of the Charge Blade’s origins. “We wanted to have something that is fun to mess with, even if you’re not actively hunting something. Just walking around and transforming it - it’s fun! It’s a different kind of fun.” These two new weapons should be able to create new dynamics between players, bringing a new dimension to hunting parties.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is bringing in some new game mechanics as well. Players will be able to ride monsters, as well as use elevation in their hunts. “Until now, in regular Monster Hunter games you had a relatively flat surface that you dealt with, so you had to deal with ‘Should I go left or right? Should I go back or forward? What side should I attack from?’ What this does is it gives you more freedom. Now you have to worry about ‘would it be better for me to attack from below or to jump from above and attack?’” Fujioka said about the changes.

There will also be no more water combat. Gone are the days when you could jump into the water and fight it out with the giant beasts of deep. Fujioka explained the change: “The one challenge we set up for ourselves on Monster Hunter 3 is we wanted to have the seamless transition from the ground to the water and I think we pulled it off pretty well. But we learned when you have combat underwater, we found the most interesting ability to be whether you could attack from below or above, giving you the Z axis to deal with.” So the team axed water combat, but the spirit of that combat carried through to the new elevation mechanic.

The elevation mechanic brings a whole new dimension to the game, making some hunts even more exciting. New monsters will also be coming along with the new mechanics. The new flagship monster, the Gore Megala, appears to be Fujioka’s new favorite monster. With its constantly regenerating scales and ability to give nearby monster the Frenzy Virus, it looks to be even more dangerous than its initial appearance suggests.

Overall, this looks to be the bigger and better than its predecessors. Monster Hunter 4 U is looking to be every hunter’s dream come to reality.

TalkBack / Pokken Tournament Hopefuls
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:52:17 AM »

It's like Smash Bros. character hype, but exclusive to Pokémon!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/38450/pokken-tournament-hopefuls

With the announcement of Tekken and Pokémon coming together to release a brand new arcade game, the community is buzzing about what he potential fighters could be. With Machamp and Lucario confirmed, it makes us wonder what other fighting Pokémon will be included. Some people think that Mewtwo might make an appearance with his new Mega Evolutions. Others think Lopunny might jump in with its new Mega Evolution and kick some butt.

Here are my Pokkén Tournament Hopefuls.

Hariyama – It just makes sense to have a sumo Pokémon in a fighting game. Most arcade games have the huge guy using his giant hands to smack the ever-loving life out of their opponents. Hariyama would fill the role perfectly.

Hawlucha – This one should be pretty obvious. Question: Who doesn’t love a luchador? Answer: No one. Luchadores are loved by all people and the Pokémon closest resembling one should be included in Pokkén.

Hitmontop – This could be an interesting concept. Hitmontop could be a quick combo machine with his rapid rolling kicks, or a complex character that has different move sets depending on if it’s standing up or spinning on its head.

Sawk – Sawk could be more of a karate-style fighter. With its build resembling a classic fighter it could be assumed it would use a classic moveset.

Throh – Judo chop! Judo throw! Throh is close the ground and able to toss his opponents across the screen. It would be fun to see this lil’ guy waddle across the arena and throw its opponents into oblivion.

Greninja -  It’s a ninja! A NINJA. Every fighting game needs a ninja and we got one in Pokémon X and Y. Greninja already made it into Super Smash Bros. It just makes sense to see it in Pokkén, too.

Ditto – Hear me out here. Ditto would take the place of the mimic characters in fighting games. Take Charade from Soul Calibur for example. It would transform into its opponent and it would come down to a battle of pure skill! (Provided that Ditto could use a move more than 5 times…)

TalkBack / The Ballad of Johnny Smiles
« on: August 17, 2014, 07:47:16 AM »

It's time we talked about Johnny.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/38300/the-ballad-of-johnny-smiles

A little while ago I had the pleasure of playing a demo of the upcoming Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright game. I know what you’re thinking and yes, it’s going to be an amazing game. The two play styles flow beautifully into each other. The story looks to be engrossing. Basically, the demo makes the game look like everything you want and more. But that’s not why I’m here, writing today. I’m here because of Johnny Smiles.

Johnny Smiles is an English security guard whose smile twinkles like the stars in the sky. He always has a chocolate bar by his side right next to his trusty flashlight.  He’s able to spin his hat with the precision and grace of an Olympian. He usually works at night and ALWAYS WEARS SUNGLASSES. That’s right, there is a security guard who wears his sunglasses at night so he can (so he can) look charming to NO ONE.

Here’s my problem with you, Johnny Smiles – Do your job. No night watchmen go on patrol once every twenty minutes. They make constant rounds! No chocolate bar breaks for these professionals! And none of them wear their sunglasses! There’s no reason to! You do not impress anyone. The only people you will encounter are criminals and your job is to stop them from doing what they want. C’mon on now, Johnny. You’re better than that.

Now, when I pick up Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright on August 29 it will be with great pleasure and righteous fury that I will take down Johnny Smiles when he takes the stand. I will uphold justice and seek the truth when lies and deceit cross my path! I will uphold the law and believe in my client! I will take down that damn Johnny Smiles.

TalkBack / One Piece: Unlimited World Red Review
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:15:19 AM »

It's almost as great as finding your own Devil Fruit.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/38135/one-piece-unlimited-world-red-review

One Piece: Unlimited World Red, released earlier this summer, is a game that not only One Piece fans can enjoy, but anyone willing to give an action-adventure-RPG a chance. Fans of One Piece will find their favorite crew sailing the high seas in search of a certain island. Once on the island all sorts of enemies from the past arise and it’s up to Monkey D. Luffy and his crew to take them down again. There are even a few new characters the Eiichiro Oda created specifically for this game.

The plot seems simple and straight forward, but there’s plenty to do when you’re not working on the main story missions. At first the island is pretty barren, but with the right materials and some money it can expand into a bigger and better base of operations. Players can find said materials during missions and in no time build a pharmacy to pick up healing items, a tavern to take on side missions and mini-games to earn more money among other institutions.

The town isn’t the only thing that can be improved. Each character has their own set of stats that can be enhanced through leveling in battles or by items obtained throughout the game. Each of the nine Strawhats’ also have distinctive play styles, and players can pick and choose their favorite characters to take along or choose the characters who can unlock secrets in each area. For instance, Chopper can bounce around the arena while fighting and dig up treasures while exploring, Usopp has a sniper-mode in battle, Sanji can fly through the air and Zoro can cut down walls. Each character has a lot to offer, so it’s hard to let one fall to the wayside as the others get exponentially stronger.

The game also features two modes. Story mode encompasses most of what I mentioned above while other mode is Coliseum. In this mode, players can unlock rival characters to fight alongside the Strawhats in several modes of combat that include two characters taking on a horde, one on one duels, and boss rushes. Players can also unlock missions and items that can be used in Story Mode. All in all, the game has a huge amount of content to unlock.

The game is easy to pick up and play with X and Y being the go to battle buttons with the A button appearing overhead when a counter or dodge is available. The battle system is easy to pick up even though it can be a little exhausting later on in the game. And while there is a certain satisfaction in leveling up your favorite characters it can sometimes be a hassle to find out you needed to bring along a weaker character with you to unlock something. But these issues don’t break the game at all.

There’s plenty of fun to be had in this exciting new adventure. The game looks and feels great. The story is solid and fun at the same time. There’s very little not to love if you’re a fan of the series. From fighting your favorite enemies to building a town from nothing, there’s plenty to do in One Piece Unlimited World Red.

TalkBack / Squids Odyssey Review
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:15:22 PM »

Sometimes things are better down where it's wetter.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37988/squids-odyssey-review

When I first heard about Squids Odyssey, I have to admit, I was skeptical. It sounded like a messy jumble of RPG and strategy elements that took place somewhere around The Little Mermaid. But lo and behold, after a few levels I found myself losing track of time in the game. I kept playing level after level in an attempt to save an underwater kingdom with a rag-tag team of heroes.

The Game Bakers did a great job of creating a game that lies somewhere between Angry Birds and Final Fantasy Tactics. The game’s controls are simple enough, with an aim-and-fire style of movement/combat. With a team of four squids you must clear each level through either battle or navigating a battleground to reach a destination. The mission descriptions are deceivingly simple; most levels require a decent amount of strategy. From the minute you choose your team of four squids, your choices start to impact how each level plays out. Do you bring a healer or a powerhouse? Do you bring two scouts and leave a shooter out for the level? Depending on how you play RPGs, your answer may vary and that’s okay. There are multiple ways to beat each level and plenty of reasons to come back for more. The learning curve can get a little steep at the beginning, but it’s not too hard to catch up.

Squids Odyssey appears to have a solid amount of content. Each level has usable items strewn about in clams and treasure chests, and some levels even have unlockable characters. All items and characters obtained in each level are available to buy in the shop after completing it. The game’s currency, pearls, can be obtained by defeating enemies or performing certain feats in each level. Pearls can also be used to beef up your characters. Since the units you choose to fight with will not gain experience, their stats improve only by purchasing new levels for each character. While this is interesting, it can be difficult. Leaving a unit or two in the dust could impact the game later and yet if your current units don’t level up, it will be game over.

There is a charming feel in the game and that comes from the story. It's simple – ooze is seeping into the ocean and turning crabs and shrimp evil. There is an evil genius and a band of heroes is determined to stop him. The dialogue between characters is cheesy enough to be cute but it actually helps solidify the fantastical world. In a world where a squids can use guns and wear pots on their heads, a little silly dialogue is welcome.

Overall, the game is very enjoyable. The level-up and equipment aspects flow unusually well with the aim-and-shoot mechanics of so many mobile games. Aside from the manual leveling system, the game is a very likable piece of entertainment. After deciding to give it a shot, I found myself really enjoying it.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: Mario Kart Tracks
« on: May 26, 2014, 07:56:00 AM »

This week the staff weighs in on their most loved, and most hated, tracks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/37517/staff-sez-mario-kart-tracks

Another week, another Staff Sez! With Mario Kart 8 coming out in a few days, I thought it would be appropriate to ask the staff about the Mario Karts of the past. Specifically, I asked, "what is your favorite and least favorite Mario Kart track?" I received a bunch of varied responses, as you'll see below. What are your favorite and least favorite Mario Kart tracks? Let us know in the comments section below!

J.P. "First Place" Corbran

I don't know if I have a favorite track, but my absolute favorite battle mode arena is Block Fort. I can't get enough of that in the N64 and DS versions.

James "F***ing Blue Shell" Jones

Favorite: Baby Park.

Least Favorite: Baby Park

Bryan "Lightning Bolt FTW" Rose

My favorite track is Wario Stadium in Mario Kart 64. For those who remember, there was a point in the track where you had to jump over a big ledge to land on the other side. What I liked to do in GP mode was to get the lightning item, and just as I finish jumping over, I'd use the item and watch as the usual other 4 people that placed highly fall way back to an earlier part of the course. That was always awesome to me for some reason.

Least favorite...the Rainbow Road courses are awesome and overall I don't have a problem with them. I don't like the one for SNES though because there are no ledges, and that makes the track tough. Obviously, it's the last course in the game so of course it's going to be tough, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!

Zach "Baby Drivers?" Miler

I have such fond memories of Moo Moo Farm (no idea why), and I absolutely hated the Donut Plains 3 from Super Mario Kart.

Andrew "NWR Cup Champion" Brown

Favorites? Hmm.. the original Rainbow Road, Luigi's Mansion, and Piranha Plant Slide to name a few.

I detested Ribbon Road and Sunset Wilds... or most of Super Circuit in general.

Clay "Suck it, Toad" Johnson

I'll try not to think about this too hard, and instead go with my gut instinct. To that end...

Favorite: Rainbow Road from Super Mario Kart. When I think about the quintessential Mario Kart experience from my salad days, I always think about epic Grand Prix outings that culminated in tense races on this track with perfection as the only option to put my nemesis in his place. And the risk/reward element... Awesome.

Least Favorite: Toad's Turnpike from Mario Kart 64. Two things make this track jump out as an unwanted experience. The aesthetic blandness and non-Mario feel of it make it less than endearing, but the annoying non-kart vehicles that roam around put it over the top (or maybe under the bottom, in this case...).

Addison "It has a canon!" Webb

Least Favorite: Yoshi Falls (DS and Wii). It's just a boring track that I felt like I ended up playing way too much of between those two games and now I can't stand it.

Favorite: DK Mountain (Double Dash). Being shot out of the barrel cannon was such a cool thing at the time. I love the sense of speed you feel racing down that track.

Aaron "Super Double Kart 64" Brown

DK Mountain is indeed friggin' awesome. That might be my favorite as well. Although I am majorly fond of Bowser's Castle (N64) too.

My least favorite are the Ghost Valley tracks. No thanks.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: NFP Figures
« on: May 19, 2014, 06:05:53 PM »

This week the staff discusses possible NFP figures.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/37453/staff-sez-nfp-figures

It's been a while since the last Staff Sez, but we're back! With the announcement of the new NFP figures coming out I thought I'd collect some thoughts from the staff. My question was "What are your most and least wanted Nintendo NFP figures?" Check out their answers! What are your most and least wanted figures? Let us know in the comments!

Zach "19.95" Miller

Well, let's assume that this NFC technology will be used, somehow, for Smash Bros. And let's pretend that the inevitable Skylander-like toys come in two varieties: fighters from the game and actual Assist Trophies. With all that being said, I have two answers:Fighter: Zero Suit Samus.Assist Trophy: Bass & Treble (Mega Man series)

Andy "Exclusively at Toys R Us" Goergen

I'm just not that interested in collecting figurines, but if there were a set of Link figures depicting all of his various incarnations, I'd like to get those.

Andrew "Special Event" Brown

Being the collector that I am, I'm going to eat this up regardless of how they come into play. I hope Nintendo opens the flood gates for second and third parties to submit their own figurines to use in the core NFP service. Ergo; Most wanted: A limited Shantae figure that unlocks special costumes, abilities or bonuses exclusive to the Wii U version of Half-Genie Hero. Least wanted: Five different-colored Toad or Yoshi variants that require individual purchases in order to get all their unique in-game features. It would be cool if these things allow you to place a specific character in a game not specific to his/her series. Imagine playing the next Zelda game as Mario or Donkey Kong, or even Bowser, just for kicks!

Clay "Two Character Pack" Johnson

Most wanted: A series of figures modeled after the actual sprites or character models of characters from classic games, perhaps sold in packs themed around the evolution of the characters' in-game appearances. For instance, show how things progressed from the green, yellow, and red Mario of Super Mario Bros. to the blocky polygonal look of Super Mario 64 to the perfectly realized cartoony model of Super Mario 3D World. Bonus if Super NES era link has pink hair.Least wanted: Stanley the Bugman.

Aaron "Extra Content" Brown

Give me a Star Fox figure and we'll be talking.

Bryan "Gotta Collect Them All!" Rose

Most wanted: An Earthbound figure would be really cool. Not that there's a chance, but still. Maybe a more realistic one would be something from Punch Out.Least wanted: Urban Champion figures. Though, maybe one with the plant pot would be cool.

Danny "Giant NFP Figures" Bivens

I'm hoping that we'll eventually see some really obscure characters. I'm not even talking about things necessarily have their own games either. Like the Famicom Disk System mascot, Disk-kun (Disk Boy/Mr. Disk). I'm with Andrew on the Toad and Yoshi variants. That is something that doesn't need to happen but probably will.

Addison "Skylanders Infinity" Webb

My Most wanted would be a R.O.B. figure.  It would be a nice tribute to the original crazy Nintendo Peripheral.  Or maybe a virtual boy that unlocks the virtual boy 3ds VC.My least wanted NFP Figure would be Roselina or Baby Roselina.

For a limited time you can become a real Pokémon Master.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37009/google-maps-allowing-users-to-catch-pokemon

It was announced by Google that iOS and Android users who use Google Maps will be able to scour the world in search of Pokémon. The application updated earlier today and was accompanied by an April Fool's video on the Google Maps website, however, users will actually be able to catch the elusive Pocket Monsters in a small way.

In Google Maps, users can scroll across the globe and find the sprite versions of Pokémon in places like Central Park, Tokyo Tower and the Vatican. There are currently 150 different Pokémon available for capturing around the world.

In the video, Brian McClendon, Google Maps Vice President, stated that users who catch every Pokémon will be invited to the final round of hiring for the position of "Pokémon Master" at Google Headquarters. At the end, a disclaimer revealed the position would only be open after the Google team battled their Pokémon first. Since their battle will never be scheduled, the position will never be open.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: 3DS Memories
« on: March 28, 2014, 10:18:00 PM »

The Nintendo 3DS just turned 3! Remember when it was just a baby?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36972/staff-sez-3ds-memories

Spring is here (supposedly) and the Nintendo 3DS has just turned 3 years old! What a week, what a week! In honor of the birthday system, I asked the staff to recall their fondest 3DS memories. Check out their responses!

What's your fondest 3DS memory? Let us know in the comments below!

Zachary "Launch Day" Miller

Neal coming to my house with a 3DS XL (for me to review) and both of us just standing, slack-jawed, at its enormosity. Although my wife going to Best Buy on launch day and getting me one and bringing it to the hospital, where I was at the time, was pretty legit.

J.P. "Midnight Release" Corbran

Going to the GameStop midnight launch event with a broken ankle, using my scooter thing to get around, and buying far too many launch games.

Andrew "Preorder Bonus" Brown

Narky answer: Nikki. Rest in Peace, Swapnote.Fanboy answer: When everyone noticed it wasn't a failure. Now it's Wii U's turn!Nostalgic answer: Discovering the secret Game Boy borders on Virtual Console games.

Bryan "Exclusive" Rose

Mega evolving the Charizard I've had since Fire Red (as in, nearly a decade) was pretty damn cool.

Zack "$5 Down" Kaplan

Putting over twenty hours into Pilotwings Resort.

Neal "First in Line" Ronaghan

StreetPassing. Also, the sheer joy of discovering certain games, namely Kid Icarus: Uprising, Etrian Odyssey IV, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, etc.

Addison "Third Dimension First Timer" Webb

Playing 3D Land for the first time and realizing it was the Mario Game I always wanted.

Alex "Launch Game" Culafi

Seeing 3D without glasses for the first time. Hot damn.

Danny "First Day Update" Bivens

The wacky videos with Japanese "idols" fighting each other, sometimes in a swimming pool.

Becky "No Glasses" Hollada

When I spent three days of a visit to Los Angeles trying to track down a copy of Fire Emblem: Awakening cause I didn't pre-order it, knowing I would be gone on release day. I ended up buying it from a Target on my way to LAX, an hour and a half before my flight. Worth it.

Justin "Line Around the Corner" Berube

Probably getting an invite at 1:00 am the day of an early morning 3DS pre-release press showing in New York City. Nothing like hauling ass to the city with no sleep, and barely making it, to view a Reggie presentation and to get some hands on time with the new handheld.Other than that, just the joys of StreetPassing. Such a great idea.

Kim "Ambassador" Keller

Not thinking I was going to have a 3DS for a while when out of nowhere Josh surprises me with a graduation gift and pays for half. He also immediately drove me out to a store to get it, pretty awesome day.

Aaron "Get Out of My Way!" Brown

Experiencing 3D without dumb glasses for the first time. I was amazed.

Daan "That Moment When You Turn It On For the First Time" Koopman

Playing Fire Emblem Awakening for the first time. Adore that game way too much at this point!

TalkBack / Kirby: Triple Deluxe Hands-on Preview
« on: March 28, 2014, 11:00:00 AM »

After playing this at a recent event, I really want to play more.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/36973/kirby-triple-deluxe-hands-on-preview

Kirby is making his way to 3DS in North America with Kirby: Triple Deluxe, an all-new game that mixes some fun new game mechanics with the classic Kirby feel.  It’s been well received in Japan (especially in our Japanese review from January), and after playing a little bit of it recently at a Nintendo event in New York, I can see why.

34.png

Three modes are available to play in Kirby Triple Deluxe. The first is Story Mode, the traditional Kirby adventure where players will spend most of their time. The second, King Dedede’s Drum Dash is a fun mini-game that is just as hard as it is addictive. The third mode is Kirby Fighters, a four-player mode vaguely reminiscent of Smash Bros. that is really satisfying.

Story Mode will keep fans of the franchise happy while still being accessible to newcomers.  The story starts off pretty simply, Kirby has a full day of running, fishing and sleeping but the next morning he finds his house has been raised into the clouds by a beanstalk. As he tries to find his friends, King Dedede is kidnapped. With that, Kirby sets off on his adventure.

40.png

Once Kirby starts making his way through the levels, the story feels secondary. All of the focus falls on to the fun level design and awesome power ups. The levels have a Kirby 64 feel, though the pace is much quicker. Each stage is on the longer side and hides tons of collectables. It looks like the game will have some solid replay value. With intuitive controls, it is easy to pick up and play.

Most of Kirby’s power-ups are the same as previous installments, but there are a few new ones, two of which I got to toy with. The Archer ability gives Kirby a bow, some arrows, and an archer’s cap. The Archer has several new abilities, including a camouflage move that is flat-out adorable. The other ability - the Hypernova ability - takes center stage in the game. This ability allows a rainbow-colored Kirby to suck up whole pieces of stages revealing new paths, collectables, and Easter eggs.

19.png

Collectables are a huge part of Triple Deluxe. The big one are the keychains, which feature sprites of characters and enemies from previous games.  From the first sprite of a sleepy Kirby to the final bosses in recent years, there is a fair amount to collect. Players can also give and receive keychains with Street Pass. You also collect Sun Stones to progress through the game, which vary from easy to find for basic progression and hard to find and holding back secrets.

King Dedede’s Drum Beat is a fantastic rhythm-based mini-game. Dedede jumps from platform to platform, collecting coins. It is the player’s job to get Dedede to the end of the stage as fast as possible, while still collecting rings, clapping hands, and staying with the beat. It only has three levels, but they are strangely addictive.

24.png

Kirby Fighters feels a lot like Super Smash Bros. in the best way possible. Up to four players choose a single ability (out of 10) and must bring their opponent’s life bar to zero in order to win. But if a player is knocked out, they return as a ghost and can re-enter the game if they land a hit on another player. The mode is a fantastic addition to what looks to be a promising game.

From what little I played, I can honestly say I enjoyed myself. I wasn’t really considering buying Kirby: Triple Deluxe until I played the demo. Kirby: Triple Deluxe looks and feel likes a fantastic game for our favorite pink puffball.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: Next New Super Smash Bros. Character
« on: March 13, 2014, 12:48:00 PM »

This week the staff weighs in on the new roster.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36832/staff-sez-next-new-super-smash-bros-character

This week we're talking about one thing and one thing only: Super Smash Bros. Let's face it, we still have no idea how many characters will fill the roster. We don't even know how many veteran fighters will be returning! I thought it might be best to ask our writers about it this week. Specifically, I asked "Who's the next brand new character to be announced for Super Smash Bros Wii U / 3DS?"

J.P. "Top Tier" Corbran

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Fred Savage.

Mike "Final Smash" Sklens

Kaptain K. Rool krashes in!

Neal "Final Destination" Ronaghan

Mike Jones throws a yo-yo at Ness' punk face. "My uncle told me to dip your face in water!"

Bryan "3 Stock" Rose

Ryu sets the stage ablaze! (Then he shoryuken's Mario or trades fireballs with him)

Andy "No Items" Goergen

Termina Link in all of his mask transformation glory!

Zach "Fox Only" Miller

Creepy Visible-Man Version of Dark Samus (from Echoes) materializes in!

Alex "You're Too Slow" Culafi

Dr. Kawashima brains the competition!

Aaron "Show Me Yo Moves" Brown

K.K. slides in to guitar (get all) up in your face!

Andrew "Trophy Collector" Brown

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Shantae takes center stage!

Justin "What Ever Happened To Mewtwo?" Berube

9-Volt skates in!

Addison "Bravely Default. Calling It." Webb

Cat Mario claws in.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: Character Class
« on: March 07, 2014, 03:27:17 PM »

All RPGs all day every day.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36786/staff-sez-character-class

I'm a man who loves a good RPG and I only recently picked up Bravely Default. In case you didn't know, the game is amazing. Check out our review!

With all of this Bravely Default going around in my head, it got me thinking... If your favorite Nintendo Character had a class (like Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc.) what would it be? Check out what our staff said! Got an idea for a character class for your favorite Nintendo mascot? Let us know in the comments below!

Bryan "Old Wise King" Rose

Mario? A black mage, because he shoots out fireballs. You can also go with Monk since he doesn't use weapons (unless he has an item). Peach would probably be a white mage. She kind of was anyway in Super Mario RPG.

Kimberly "Maniacally Laughing Boss" Keller

I would make Peach a mage and she'd be all "Pew pew pew!! Super deadly lasers... that are magic!! Bahahahaha!!!" And Pikachu would be a quick little rogue, just zippin' along and stealin' stuff left and right. Just a tiny little yellow menace to your pocketbook.

Zachary "Wandering Swordsman" Miller

I'm not sure what Samus would be. Maybe an Elf/Archer since she uses a lot of ranged attacks?

Neal "Demonic Final Boss" Ronaghan

Little Mac would a be a scrappy little fighter.

After Pokémon Bank and Sub Wars, what else could you want?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36650/staff-sez-what-game-do-you-want-nintendo-to-give-us-next

With the Oscars soon upon us and the spring flowers starting to bloom, it's the dawn of a new day. A day where I've asked the NWR staff another question. This week's question was "After releasing Pokémon Bank, Sub Wars and offering Four Swords for free, what game do you want Nintendo give us next?" Check out their answers!

What game do you want next? Let us know in the comments!

Side note: Because I love the Oscars I will be giving everyone Oscar-winning movie nicknames this week. Just so everyone is aware.

Mike "The Hurt Locker" Sklens

Wand of Gamelon on virtual console.

Neal "The Artist" Ronaghan

StarTropics 3

Zachary "Slumdog Millionaire" Miller

That version of Rondo of Blood that only came out in North America. Dracula X, maybe?

J.P. "The King's Speech" Corbran

Super Mario Bros. 3, dammit!

Bryan "The Departed" Rose

Pokemon Snap 2. The Wii U game pad can be used as a camera, like how the camera worked in the recent Wind Waker remake. The idea of capturing pictures of 700+ Pokemon is a bit daunting, but it would probably be tons of fun!

Jeffrey "No Country for Old Men" Trewin

An authorized and completed version of Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes.

James "Crash" Dawson

A Nintendo-themed pinball game where we get a few tables for free and have the opportunity to pay for more.

Andy "Titanic" Goergen

A game that plays like Elite Beat Agents but features Nintendo music (songs from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc).

Guillaume "Gladiator" Veillette

It's about time North Americans got their free copy of Donkey Kong on NES with the cement factory level hacked back in, or Super Mario Bros. DX

Becky "Argo" Hollada

Fire Emblem 6. Complete BS that we don't have every Fire Emblem game in English yet, but I want the sequel to Blazing Sword first.

TalkBack / Staff Sez Special Edition: Valentine's Day
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:59:41 PM »

It's time to boot up those old systems and show them you care.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36591

Have you ever truly loved? Maybe it was your first, maybe you've found them recently, or maybe you're still looking for that game you can play over and over again. Some of the staff here has found their loves and have written some beautiful prose for them. Let's take a romantic stroll down memory lane, shall we?

Zach "Legend of Love" Miller

Dearest The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (Game Boy Color),

Long has our love affair blossomed in portable settings. I recall many a sleepless night spent in camping tents, long past sundown, caressing your chariot's smooth curves and plastic frame, eager to find all of your well-hidden photographic secrets. I spent hours longing for your Wind Fishy embrace, frantic to pass the time between grocery stores and malls knowing, deep down, that I just wanted to be with you, plumbing labyrinthine dungeons in search of that joyful music we made together. Ours was not some one-night stand, but a romance rekindled year after year, revisiting the place we first met--Koholint Island--and bedding down, only to wake up the next morning on a fresh hunt for lost swords and shields.

And though your physical body died long ago, the digital age has brought us even closer together, for your are never but a screen-tap away. I couldn't live without you. My Heart Container aches when we're apart, and Malon sings when we're together. This Valentine's Day, let's meet again on this long trading sequence we call LIFE. XOXO

Carmine "16 Bit Shakespeare" Red

A Sonnet to Super Mario Bros. (NES)

Shall I compare thee to a modern game?
Thou art more simple, and yet, more complex.
Rough trends do shake some darling gimmicks lame,
Best graphic's spark falls fast from its apex.

Sometime too hot the eye of bloggers shines,
and often does their rosy praise subside.
And top ten games on lists have their declines,
Old tech made "obsolete" is harsh bromide.

But thy eternal gameplay shall not fade,
Nor lose that magic spirit that thou ow'st,
Nor sequels smother you within their shade,
When in eternal lines to time though grow'st.

So long as gamers play, and hearts can glow,
So long will all love playing Mario.

Daan "Paper Heart" Koopman

When I boot you up, you bring me in a happy mood.
No, it is not about shooting or being a crazy dude.
When I enter file select it simply becomes absurd,
I hear like the best music I ever heard.
The rocking guitars and uplifting beats make it already feel grand.
But when you starting playing it, you really start to understand.

The fun characters and vibrant worlds make it all right,
And you even have not begun to fight.
From fighting with fuzzies to duking with the shadow,
The danger never becomes way too mellow.
The stage is set and ready to go,
Let this plumber give it all and start the show.

Exploring the worlds is your main goal,
And the conclusion will make the world feel whole.
Meeting new friends and collecting Crystal Stars is where it counts,
With funny situations happening in great amounts.
Destroy the X-Nauts with all your might,
And perhaps be victorious in this everlasting fight.

Let the cartoony attitude not make you shy,
Because it is the creativity that makes this all fly.
It is a love for a game I never felt before,
And it made the RPG genre that I adore.
However don't go and expect too much of a chore,
Mainly because it is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
