Episode 517: Survey Says
« on: April 09, 2017, 08:23:00 AM »

None of you are listening to a word we say.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/44419/episode-517-survey-says

Jon is at sea this week, and in his stead Syrenne fills in to talk Bravely Default: Fairy Effect, Graceful Explosion Machine, and the Switch port of LEGO City Undercover. One is a depressingly standard MOBAGE, the second an attractive score-attack shooter, and the third a waiting game. She also attempts to talk Kingdom Hearts, but James is having none of it. Guillaume is practicing the dark arts, summoning Yoshi into what must now be called Sonic 2 and Yoshi! He also has thoughts on Double Fine's Broken Age, and why he likes Tim Schafer games. James punts on his New Business, having instead spent the week still watching baseball while still nominally playing Stella Glow. Greg finally brings us to the promised land of Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D. It's been a long time since we first mentioned this game, but at long last we are here.

After the break we crack open a couple of Listener Mail questions. First, we examine what video game content we define as "objectionable", and if societal pressures or our own shame dampen our enjoyment. Of all the groups to answer this question, this is probably the most questionable. We then pivot to naming our personal retro-trilogy of desire, inspired by the recently-announced Seiken Densetsu Collection. You can lead introspective discussions about the shapliness of our legs by sending us an email.

First off, the Sonic and Tails sprites are not new. they're actually from Sonic CD. there's a part in Metallic Madness Act 2 where you have to navigtate this part with a shrink ray. before you go "Tails was not in that game!" he was in the 2011 ramake done by Christian "The Taxman" Whitehead and Simon "Stealth" Thomley. These of course are the devs of the upcoming Sonic Mania, so they're responsible for the Tails Sprite, while the original Sonic CD team made the Sonic one.

Second,

You clearly have little faith in what people can do with the FM synth chip, Yoshidious.

And lastly, yes I do think it's neat, Gui. it's one of the many projects from the Sonic Retro/SSRG community I hadn't heard of and it looks polished enough. That being said, Character hacks aren't exactly a new thing, ranging from the mundane such as adding the chaotix or Amy Rose or Sally Acorn to one of these games, to the far more elaborate joke projects out there.

That being said, I think I linked you on twitter a game to try out that wasn't so much a character hack, but something I feel pushes the NES to it's absolute breaking point while showing an unmatched loving tribute to both it's franchise and many others.

Also, I notice the Monochrono plugs, i just forget about them after 5 minutes because if I were to go into a game like Monochrono, I'd rather go in with little to no expectations.

EDIT!: I'm sorry I picked on you for the Pokemon thing. I think the point i was tyring to get across is that we play RPGs for very different reasons, methinks. Pokemon is a series that has NEVER had anything beyond absolutley milquetoast characters, Just like the Legend of Zelda, just like any Mario Game not devleoped by Alpha Dream or Intelligent Systems, just like an astonishing number of Nintendo Franchises.

Pokemon to me has always been a bit of a "Theater of the mind" sort of franchise, and that's where the rabid fanbase for this stuff comes from the gameplay is what's compelling and much like say... a Kirby game, it's easy to either make for an easy game or to challenge yourself by trying to find maybe a less than ideal combination of Pokemon to carry through the game.

I really don't fully understand why I can dig pokemon so much and not love Dragon Quest or Etrian stuff.

What I can say is... Different Strokes for Different Folks!

I hope he didn't go on any three hour tours. We may not hear him for years, in that case.

MonoChrono sounds interesting. Never heard of it before. ;) Should have this Siren, on again. Kid has potential. Anyone notice that every two months or so, Jon's voice gets decidedly softer, and he starts talking about niche Japanese games and occasionally mentions he's a lesbian. Very strange. Almost like he's a different person.

I really enjoyed the discussion on bayonetta and playing video games in front of other people. I have another perspective to add.

My wife is asian who has a lot of different interests than me and is not a fan of video games. However I try to at least play something everyday and there has been only three games she has stopped to ask more questions about. Those being Rhythm heaven, Pikmin, and Bayonetta. She generally rolls her eyes if I'm playing something like Gears of War, Evil Within, or some other random M rated title. She actually wanted me to never play bayonetta unless she was in the room because she loved how sexy/nerdy the character was. So I think culture does play a huge role in interpretation of a character.

Another twist to this is I have two children oldest of which is 15 months. At what age should I stop playing M rated games in front of them? I'm sort of proud of my modest tv set up. I have a now old big screen tv with a used sound bar system I bought. I have all my consoles plugged in that I have ever owned including a sega saturn and N64 to all current gen systems. It kind of bothers me there will be a day I'll be banished away from the living room to play on a lesser set up.

Sam & Max gets significantly better after the first season, they were still learning how to do episodic games with the first. You should really keep going.

mmm the writing in pokemon never really bothered me. I mean it's Vanilla sure but still it never kept me from playing the games.

Uncharted 4 has amazing writing and i'm playing it right now but god the gameplay is boring me to death.

So if I had my choice i rather have solid fun gameplay and meh writing vs great writing and meh gameplay.

Obviously i would love both!

While I brought up Uncharted 4 I think it's funny that Bayonetta 2 gets brought up for its wonky humor and sextual style yet no one bats an eye at Drakes down right now mass murder rate in ea Uncharted game.

Drake kills more people in one death room than Arnold does in commando.

Yet that's cool. I guess bullet between the eyes isn't as bad as Bayo showing her ass. Weird.

I'd love to have a Ghosts n' Goblin collection that includes the NES, SNES, arcade, Sony, and mobile games. I already have all the ones you can purchase on the 3DS but would definitely pay for remastered updates.

I see people bringing up Drake's body count in the Uncharted games all the time. I know it struck me when I played them, and I talked about it on social media. But reasons to talk about that series don't often come up on a Nintendo podcast.

It's true we could have spent more time discussing violence, but a) the email specifically focused on sexual and religious content (and SMT and Bayonetta were the examples provided) and b) personally, I think I flat out never really played any shooter in front of Karen. So we never had a discussion about them the way we discussed Bayonetta.

I actually got really uncomfortable watching my friend play The Last of us. something about that game was just... Visceral in a way that made me feel weird.

otherwise, I do all my gaming in my room usually, away from prying eyes, and like... I think the only thing I wouldn't stream would be like... outright porn or Yandere Sim or something, and that'd be moreso for Twitch ToS rather than any shame i'd have about it.

One of my favorite games of all time is set in a world where a very christian-like Theocratic order is manipulating two noble houses into running their nations into the ground so that they can swoop in when the commonfolk reach a fevered pitch and properly cement a Holy empire over the aristocracy, causing the deaths of millions. This game also paints it's messiah figure as little more than a spy and rabble rouser that was built up by the church as being the son of God, and this is all presented to you through a scripture that in the thinly veiled analogy would be something akin to the gospel of Judas.

The adult themes in video games is a tough needle to thread.  Partially because in the history of video games, mature content usually just meant gratuitous violence and sexual content (Duke Nukem), which was pretty immature in its execution of content not appropriate for children.

Times I can think back to where I was uncomfortable playing a game when people walk into the room are times which you know a ridiculous decision was made but is presented in a way in which it takes itself seriously (Tifa's chest in Final Fantasy VII, a LOT about Metal Gear Solid series).  Greg rightly pointed out that you end up pointing out you're playing/enjoying the game IN SPITE of these choices, not because of them, because there's value in the gameplay, other aspects of the storytelling/presentation, or redeeming qualities of the game that make it worth the time investment.

The games that go all-in in the ludicrous display of sexuality or violence but are self-aware enough to know they're ridiculous.  Bayonetta is a perfect example of this, Dead or Alive is one, too, especially with what they've done with their offshoot series, DOA extreme volleyball.

There's something inherent in some of the more Japanese games that make me wary to play around other people.  One of my favorite game series this generation has been Gravity Rush, which is SO foreign from a culture and humor perspective that my wife gave me strange looks every time Kat made a yelp or squeal, and all the different costumes which somewhat sexualize her more, which is a dissonance to the character's innocent and bubbly nature.

WHAT IS THIS?

And Greg, YES, Panzer Dragoon should come to Switch. In fact, what a great time this would be to start bringing a bunch of great Saturn Games back. Sega should just do what NeoGeo is doing instead of making Sonic Generations again.

The original Final Fantasy Tactics (or in it's more silly, sheaksperian translation of War of the Lions for the PSP).

The game, much like many other examples of Matsuno's work, draws upon historical political drama. FFT's story is more or less a retelling of the War of the Roses, abeit with liberties taken, and the game ultimately devolving more into a story about fighting demons in the end, rather than following through with letting just the church's establishment be the primary antagonist.
