Man, you need to get with it. I'd seen and commented on that article shortly after it posted a couple months ago.

It's a shame Pietroits lost their banners in reformatting their site. Also, a shame Grubdog decided to retire from game writing when the Switch launched.

I might bring the banners back. They just didn't look as good with this current theme which supports all the cool embeds and jsut visually looks nicer than the older ones we had.

Grub is posting some stuff at http://christansley.wordpress.com/ I wish he'd hand over the pietriots twitter account though so I could automate social meda promotion through it.

Why does everyone and their mother feel the need to explain the NPC meme?

It's almost like they're all reading from the same script like some lazily programmed NPCs...

It's been our most viewed 2018 article this year. I needed to just post something topical to win over eyeballs. Our traffic is in freefall. I blame reddit.

Really?! And you just posted it today.... I'm sorry to hear that but happy it's getting you some traffic. Perhaps it is time I ditched NWR and joined the Patriots for exclusive postings and articles. It seems my charity work to try and save the forums is not being well received and heavily criticized so might as well go where the grass is greener and just as slow traffic wise.

There's a variety of contributing factors. The main one being we haven't posted much this year and what has been posted has been low quality. Also our hits are bound to be in freefall ever since the lofty highs of 2014 when Grubdog made the front page of r/gaming twice.

But then there's jsut weirdness, here are the most viewed articles from this calendar year on the site. Articles that were actually posted in 2018 are labelled with orange on the left.

We're like some sort of aging rockstar who has to rely on their back catalogue for traffic. The Dragon Quest VIII Exposed post is especially weird because when Grubdog posted that one it went largely ignored and I suspect that was one of the reasons he lost motivation. But look at its stats on a month by month basis.

It's trending upwards with no hint of slowing down. I can't explain it but maybe it's relatively high on some search terms for people stuck in the game.

If you want to write some stuff for us I'm more than happy to add you as a contributor.

It's a shame that the DQ article and lack of response at the time sapped Grubdog's enthusiasm or the lack of responses in general may have done that. I do regret not commenting more. For some reason, it was a struggle to comment for awhile because I could never my WordPress password or it seemed to have trouble syncing up to my avatar and then a couple times I lost the post I made while trying to log in. It's become a lot smoother in the last while.

The other thing is that to Grubdog's credit, he stayed pretty up to date on game releases but I think it takes most gamers some time to catch up to new games and over the course of a couple years more people will finally get around to playing it. There are some special certain games that will have a lot of people playing them at release but, outside of that, it takes time to find an audience. Heck, this year I'm finally playing through Mario & Luigi 3 with the remake just about to come out in a few months. I also got through Luigi's Mansion 2 this year and am trying to work my through TriForce Heroes and Metroid Prime: Federation Force with through online meet-ups with members here. Last year, I finally played through Luigi's Mansion on GameCube for the first time. There's still other GameCube games and N64 games and SNES games I've been meaning to get too. So, with all the games out there, people's playing habits are going to be more separate and on different timelines than ever before.

I remember reading that article and bit and thinking it was something to keep in mind for when I do get around to playing game. Sort of like a FAQ, it seemed like a handy reference so it might be that others did as well or it just does have the right terms for people looking for help in grinding for the game. I do think it's continued success over the past year is evidence of how people play at different speeds. Plus, it came out a time that had a lot of other big games just released so again there would be that catch-up effect. That's why the back catalog will probably see hits. I've even gone back to it to see some of the writing when playing a game from a few years back to compare my thoughts and yours.

As for the talk of forums being obsoleted by things like Discord, Facebook, Reddit and Twitter in some ways they are although I argue that Reddit is sort of just like a big forum. But there are other sites out there with forums that are still thriving and surviving. Neoseeker and Something Awful are examples of large forums doing alright. I don't know what the state of NeoGaf is like these days but it seems to work.

The advantage they have over a place like this is a large userbase/community and because of that there is a lot more instant communication. Posting something will generally see a lot of other replies be made in response. So, for NWR with a lower base and less posters will have a lot more stuff that doesn't get a reply right away or doesn't seem to get much traction even if people read or respond to it. With the NWR Discord, you can now have that benefit of finding someone else online at the same time and trade back and forth communication. Moreover, a conversation can take a turn leading to a subject of interest that one can delve into right away rather than posting on the forums and hoping others will respond in return.

The difference is, and this is something Mop it up mentioned the other day on Discord when we were chatting, it "just feels like a waste to put effort into messages here that just get pushed up and disappear." I agreed and mentioned that I know a lot of users don't even bother to look back at the scroll of past messages so people often miss previous comments and topics of interest or start posting news that's already been posted.

When I checked into Discord today and caught up on all the messages that had been made after checking out yesterday, I was very disappointed that having you, Deguello and Bill Aurion show up on the Discord last night / this morning seemed to make no waves. No one else was talking about it or mentioned it. The endless scroll had moved on and I think most users didn't bother to go back and see what they had missed while off. Now if the three of you had come here and started posting in a topic with me here then I think it would have made bigger waves with the community here. Plus, there are users that may check in here now once a week or once a month or however infrequent their pattern may be but, when doing so, they'd have a chance to see such a thread and catch up and get to witness the grand reunion themselves. Most people probably aren't going to scroll through Discord a week later to catch up on everything they missed.

That is a bit of an advantage that forums still have over something like that. If you want to make some thoughts or keep some archived conversations/reference points then a forum can still have some benefit. If you aren't concerned about instant response and having a real-time chat then the forum, to me, still makes sense as a place to post things to allow for a bit of a record for yourself and others.

Don't worry, it's not your responsibility to make comments on blogs, or even complete old games. Of course if you want to that's another matter.

You're right about the benefits that forums have over Discord, it's just that Discord is colonising the time that people might've otherwise been engaged in a forum and it seems to be winning that battle.

That's why I recognize to that posting and usage of the NWR Forums is going to trend down as the userbase gets older and has more things in life occupying their time like raising a family. It's not like 10 - 15 years ago when the majority was young and still in school or getting out and had the time to post and while away on the Forums on any ol' topic that sprang to mind.

Don't worry, in 40 years time we all will be on here 24/7 complaining about how our grand-kids never call and that the nursing staff is stealing our amibo.

Hahaha. We should do an Old Forum User Week in which we imagine what we'd be like posting on here 50 years from now.

I feel I've seen a couple a few months back but it is getting more rare for sure. At the same time, I think the forums reflect that with the conversations taking place. I brought this up in the past but when we got younger less informed new users posting on here, a lot of the older ones were quick to shoot down their ideas and critical of their posting. I tried to highlight how if some of these older posters looked at their own posts from 6 - 8 years ago then they would see how similar they were at one time to these newer ones. The difference is that everyone was young at that time so everyone was more willing to participate in baseless speculation and silly questions or ideas.

The end result is that I think it ended up driving away some of the younger crowd since they didn't get much support or acceptance here and has left the forum with the older base crowd it had attracted from the GameCube and early Wii era. It's great for other older gamers since topics and discussions here can have better insights and quality posts due to the maturity of the users here. Yet, I think it does create a further barrier for younger gamers since it may seem like they don't have much to add to the discussion or fit it in with a tight knit group. A large forum where there are new users and topics and posts flying about every day is less daunting since it gives the impression one can easily just dive in and be a part of a conversation and don't have to worry about being the new guy and standing out.

Unlike the rest of the users here, I keep my posts at a level for all ages to be welcoming to any potential young and extremely dumb new users that may be interested in joining (since I make it seem like that is the only possible combination) so that they don't have to feel too worried about the quality of their posts/contributions but I'm only one person here. (Or 60 people here depending on how many dupe accounts you think I have on any given day.)

It's more like gaming is an aging hobby. Teenagers don't play games, they only watch others play while they shout expletives in chat. :shakes_fist_at_sky:

Maybe a Free Fortnite Tutoring thread will attract unexpecting victims children here or their parents.

Fortnite, Minecraft and the sales number of GTAV all suggest that there may still be some teens playing videogames.

Another thing I notice is that there seem to be a lot of guests on this site. Earlier this afternoon, there were 30 guests in this forum and just now when I came there are 25. They are not all spiders and bots. At least, according to the forum user page. It was 2 Google bots and 1 spider while 232 guests looked at various other things on this forum. So, it is just a silent majority that comes to follow our antics and get their daily dose of Khushrenada? Lapsed users that just don't bother to sign in? Old people who have pushed buttons and don't know how they got here and how they can exit it to to their granddaughter's twitter account? (Maybe if I click on every thread here I'll be able to move on to the next site. Oh, a thread about the Canada Goose? Well, at least there's something of interest here.....)

If I were to write articles for Pietroits, would exclusivity be a part of the deal? Or could write articles there and still have them posted here on these forums or even for this site if I were to became staff at NWR?
