I'm not going to lie here, either.... His risks vs. rewards video and analysis of Space Invaders was absolutely amazing.

As were the other half-dozen videos.  It's non-pretentious, game design fundamentals in a way that anyone can understand.  Anyone who is designing a game, wants to, or just appreciates gameplay really owes it to themself to check these out and subscribe!

TalkBack / Re: YouTube App Coming To Switch, Possibly This Week?

I would prefer if video streaming apps stayed off the Switch. I like the idea of Switch purely as a gaming device.
I mean it in the most respectful way possible when I say: "Then use it that way!"

What would really excite me about this would be if Nintendo added 3D haptic feedback to the tracks so that I could feel the terrain under my kart as I raced.

You forgot the best 3DS September release of them all: Picross 3D Round 2!

Can't... stop... playing...

And up until that game came out, we had played two rail shooters. SORRY, CABAL SHOOTERS.

I'm going to pretend that was not a typo, because that's the kind of world I want to live in.

You think a video full of information released on YouTube was a lousy way to get information out there to a large audience in the first place?

How would you suggest they do so?

In the demo, you can only play with random online users.

This is definitely a title I've always thought would benefit from a stereoscopic presentation.

Nintendo couldn't make a quick buck releasing Virtual Boy anything.  They'd have to write a system emulator and who knows what kind of processor this thing used.  Adding colors would likewise require entirely reprogramming the games.

That said, I would play the hell out of a Virtual Console release of Red Alarm.

I never had a ROB growing up.  I've never seen one in real life.

And yet here's your chance and you're walking away!

Reggie, Miyamoto, and Bill Trinen, I expect.  There are still plenty of familiar faces, and I'm not worried about those.

I wonder if Miyamoto gets promoted or if Takeda does.  Miyamoto in charge would really be something.

It's funny.  I felt like I had a connection with Satoru Iwata, because his Nintendo Directs were quirky but self-aware and his Iwata Asks interviews were incredibly charismatic.  It's stunning to think that he's gone.  I hoped that his health issues had improved with treatment.

It was nice to have a videogame programmer and producer run such a large company as Nintendo.  While I hope the new leadership is able to improve Nintendo's position, I also hope they stay true to the idea of gameplay as ultimate.

I literally only saw The LEGO Movie because I had to see for myself what was going on with so many cross-licensed characters.  (It turned out to be a fantastic movie about LEGO and then Will Farrell showed up and it was a serious movie with a touching ending?? wat?)

Every time I hear more about LEGO Dimensions I get the exact same feeling of "is this real life?"

People have been whining about it since Super Mario 64 DS came out.  :P

There's no way the 3DS can handle N64 games.  The system's just not close to powerful enough to emulate the N64 CPU.  (Make no mistake--VC games use software emulation of the original hardware running the original code, which is why no SuperFX games like Star Fox are available: it's a separate in-cart CPU and no one wants to worry about the sync issues).

So while an N64 could be ported to the 3DS with vastly superior graphics, actual emulation of the original is out of reach.

I'm surprised they don't have classic DS titles on the 3DS Virtual Console, to be honest.  I can only imagine it's a memory mapping issue.  (They could offer them as "Virtual Consoles" or not, but I think eShop access would be a boon.)

Middleware engines have become the norm and if Nintendo wants to improve third party support next time around they need to make sure those engines are on their hardware.

They can't--not any more than they could force any other game developer to develop for the Wii U.  This is a decision that each developer makes for itself.

In this case it even seems like the dev would be happy to release the game on the Wii U, they just CAN'T.  It just isn't feasible for them to jump through Nintendo's hoops.

These aren't hoops that Nintendo have set up.  This is like learning German and then being upset that no one can understand you when you fly to Spain.  German's a fantastic language and has many intriguing features and so on, but if you can't speak German in Spain, it's not because Spain set up hoops for you to jump through.

To a certain extent, having a different architecture is going to create more work for developers who may only want to optimize for one or the other.  That's not a malicious design decision either, but it does mean that a developer somewhere is going to have to make adjustments and compensations.  Where middleware is involved, the middleware developer is responsible.

The success of Steam on Linux (two years in advance of the SteamOS-based consoles coming this Fall) has encouraged more and more developers to consider cross-platform tools when they develop new games.  With luck, this will have a spill-over effect on consoles as well.

« on: January 27, 2015, 04:28:43 AM »
The "unbreakable 3D" effect is a system feature of the New 3DS.  There's a secondary camera that turns on if you have face tracking enabled, and it detects the position of your face and adjusts the 3D grille so that it is optimal for your current angle of viewing.

This keeps the 3D effect sharp even as your hands slightly move and greatly improves the immersion.

I figured I'd grab a Mario amiibo because it'd go the quickest, and just get a Villager amiibo (the one I really wanted) a month later for my next paycheck.

That plan didn't work out so well.  :/

I think Nintendo should patch out Amiibo support for rare figures that are discontinued.  I would find that amusing.

« on: December 05, 2014, 07:20:37 PM »
Yeah, if we physically have a prepaid card in our hand that we've put a specific amount of money on so we can buy things, we don't have to type in all the numbers on the card on the 3DS, making it work exactly like every other card-based Point-Of-Sale system since 1971.

Terrifying.

Calling it right now.  If you link your Toon Link Amiibo, you get to play as Toon Link.

With this being just a subset of the Wii U games, the answer seemed pretty clear to me.
