Perhaps it'd sell better if it were Hyrule Hunters...

Any word yet on how Minecraft for Wii U is doing sales wise? I get my internet hooked up at the house tomorrow and am seriously thinking of getting it just to give my PS4 a break.

It's the best-selling Wii U game in Japan, as if that actually means anything.

They just dropped a patch to the game late January and another major patch is planned to release soon bringing the game up to the current console standard of 1.8.8/TS31. Their desire to continue support of the game is a good sign they are happy with sales.

Cool, I was worried it would flop and then all those Nintendo themes would get canceled because the main reason I would get it, aside from the offtv play, is for the Nintendo stuff. I wonder if it supports Amiibo and if they will start making Minecraft Amiibo soon.

Outselling Splatoon on the Japan eShop, last I heard on the internet hear-say.

It's domestic success could influence Nintendo Co. Ltd. in some fashion.

Japan likes Minecraft too that they just ate up the Minecraft-inspired Dragon Quest Builders. From tweets that I've read, it's sort of a Minecraft for older JRPG players where there is more direction and goals introduced. Mario Tennis come in at 3rd and Splatoon is finally knocked out of the top ten.

Splatoon has joined the ranks of Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter where they don't fall off charts due to lagging interest, but because everyone already owns the game in the country.

What that game has done in Japan is just astonishing. It's been popular everywhere, but seemingly the most so there, in a country that has never been all that interested in its genre.

It took three releases of a game in the biggest franchise in the country in a genre that's on the rise to knock Splatoon out of the top 10. (That and Mario Tennis, so there's clearly no accounting for taste.)

Funnily enough, if those multi-platform games were combined into one entry, Splatoon might be in the top ten still.

Last gen Japanese devs had a little phase where they were trying to make "Western-style" games to sell to Western gamers.  In theory the idea made some sense in that the North America audience is the biggest and the console market has shrunk in Japan.  The big flaw was that part of what Western gamers like about Japanese games was that they had a distinct style different from North American or European games.  Plus Western devs don't have to "guess" what a Western-style game is like, they just make them and a Japanese company is usually not going to get it quite right.  So really we were just getting Western-style games that don't feel quite right.

But what if Nintendo has stumbled onto a similar idea.  They took a Western genre and made a clearly Japanese game of it which appealed to Japanese gamers.  Meanwhile it appealed to the West as well as most good Japanese games that aren't based around majong or oogling jailbait tend to do.  So could this work again if Nintendo tried their own take on a different Western genre?  There is a Western style of RPG and PC birthed genres like RTS or tycoon games and the big open-world adventure genre trailblazed by GTA.  Splatoon is sort of Nintendo's take on a multiplayer focused FPS so what would their take of GTA be?  It doesn't have to Mario killing hookers as they've clearly demonstrated they can separate the appeal of the gameplay from the mature themes.

And is this the approach to rebuild the Japanese game market?  Maybe Japanese gamers are just waiting for something new?  The genres of Japanese game development are pretty set in stone these days.  Yeah you can say the same for America but for the Japanese those clichés are new experiences for them.

Maybe Ian has it backwards maybe the reason Japanese companies were so successful was they were it for so long there just was no alternative from 1985 till 2005 Japanese game consoles dominated the entire world, western consoles floundered and flopped. Maybe the industry as a whole was just waiting for Xbox to come along and create a market that would give western developers a chance to get their games out there. Maybe gamers were just getting tired of the anime themed cyborgs that dominated Japan and were waiting for a Renaissance of western development and now Japanese developers are right where they belong, floundering in their own market because gamers grew tired of the same old thing. Eventually we might, as a whole, get tired of what the western developers are doing too, but I doubt it because American's tend to be pretty hung up on big explosions lately and if you dig into the culture, 9/11 changed us to a point where we kind of collectively needed to see "our guys" win for a change.

Them is some crappy Wii U numbers. Is this the worst week it has had in Japan?
I read somewhere else that Wii U is actually having supply shortages in Japan and this explains the low sales numbers this week. I wonder if that's true or just PR B.S.

With a mere 64,713 XB1 owners how does any game make a profit?  The maximum sales a game can get is 64,713 and any game today selling only that would be considered a massive flop.  I know that those games have releases in Europe and North America to give them a worldwide profit but their is a cost in translating the game into Japanese as I'm guessing most of those games were developed in the West with English as the native language.  How is that justified with such low figures?

One answer could be MS footing the bill on localizations to keep software releases coming out in the region.  But I thought MS gave up on Japan a long time ago. Either way, skimping on things like voice acting might be getting them by.

Well we have companies like XSeed who have ways to cheaply localize games for the West and they turn a profit. Perhaps there is a similar deal in the reverse? Also, a lot of Japanese understand some English so they may not worry about translating and localizing all that much.

How do we know those games are even getting localized? Is it possible one of the reasons Xbox is failing in Japan is because Microsoft won't localize games and thus Japanese gamers are limited to either buying games that don't require knowing English, very few probably exist, or that the console is only selling to those who are proficient enough in English to not be bothered?

Also Xbox pretty much started as an offshoot of the gaming PC, was Windows PC's ever popular in Japan? Or more importantly are the franchises that were most popular on PC that drove the sales of the Xbox even popular in Japan?

Big publishers usually do a good job of localizing things and including multiple language options. I don't assume Microsoft to be any different with even it's Xbox One exclusive games.

We assume, but that is assuming they cared enough to do so. Maybe they aren't dubbing them though what if all they are doing is providing Japanese sub titles? While that would count as technically localizing, it might only be minimal effort. I can only assume finding someone in Japan who actually owns an Xbox One is going to be difficult for a site this small so all we have are assumptions then.

Well, there is Ty. He's in Japan and has an Xbox One, though I'm not sure it's a Japanese one.
