Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 368: Is Your Heart Big Enough?
« on: February 02, 2014, 10:26:03 AM »
About Jonny's intro about the live retroactive: I think he's kind of right on both his doubts, but mostly that may be due to the different nature of the live podcast compared to the live telethon. In the latter, the bigger number of live listeners and the presence of a dedicated callers segment puts the spotlight more on the caller and his questions/comments, meanwhile calling during a live podcast means entering an already estabilished discussion where it's a bit more difficult to find the right time to speak. In my personal case, for example, I was already excited just to be in the same (virtual) room with "the podcast people" ( ;) ) and then when Greg started gifting us his great knowledge of F-Zero I felt just right to listen and learn. Did I want to say something more?yes, but was I having a great time anyway?of course! The idea of a live podcast is an exciting one but it may a bit tricky to pull it off 100%. I think you guys did a great job because it was a great live experience and good to listen to again, but if you want to make the listeners participate more and more actively there is room to grow together  :)  It would help to know at least some of the New Business games in advance (but I imagine it'd be a bit difficult) or to invite a listener to take part in Now Playing to improvise the reading and have a laugh together. Also I hope more people will be there next time because the IRC felt a bit emptier than during the telethon.

I liked the live podcast format, too bad there weren't enough callers to cover all of new business. Next time there should be a guest caller for now playing, to add to the pain ehm I meant fun  ;D
The fzero discussion was great, I didn't get the chance to say much but I just could not interrupt such a discussion especially by thaat amazing river of knowledge that is Mr. Leahy  :cool;
Too bad the arcade AX version has not been talked about much, I wanted to say how I unlocked it via emulation. Also, to support Jonny's opinion, I tried playing the first cup and found it much less difficult than story mode. I was expecting, as they correctly said in the show, some sort of guide to the game with a learning curve (which was, instead, a learning brick wall) but I changed my mind as soon as the infamous Samurai Goro mission (2). The mechanic to buy missions is also very annoying: exit story mode, go to options, go to the store, go to the misc category, buy the mission, go back to story mode.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: 3DS XL Accesories?
« on: August 25, 2012, 05:03:37 AM »

No one sells Hori accessories in the UK?  I find that hard to believe....they're a pretty large company.   I know everyone loves them for their fighting sticks, but most of their other accessories are actually very good.   If it's not too expensive, I'm sure whatever retailer you use for import stuff should carry Hori.

And the USB to DSI cables are a lifesaver!  Especially if when you're traveling--  I'm going to take my netbook with me on trips anyway, so I can just charge through there, which is especially convenient since most hotels I stay at tend to skimp on outlets in the room.

Even though I'm Italian, I often shop online from the UK (mostly Amazon UK and Play.com) because I find better prices there. I'm checking them out, plus a number of other retailers, and I can't find XL cases anywhere, let alone screen protectors. The only one I found was on amazon but only the red one is in stock, having a blue 3dsxl I'd prefer at least the black option. Amazon IT doesn't have it either, the only thing I can do is wait. I've seen the Hori accessories on AmazonCOM but it's not very convenient for me to import atm, I hope they will be made available in Europe soon.

EDIT: Could I just use a DSi XL case instead? are they good for the 3ds xl?

Is Mr.Jones behind this, because he hates that title?  :P:

I'll just add my two cents...digital games should cost less than their phisical counterparts. I always prefer the phisical copy (I'm kind of a collector) but I'd happily go for a digital game in some cases IF it's reasonably priced in comparison to the actual boxed version. Sadly this isn't the case.

On a sidenote, it's hard to find cheap 3DS games, unlike say PS3 ones. it's going to be hard to build a nice catalogue for me!

I'm on the same situation, I'm not taking my new xl out if I don't have a carrying case!
Amazon UK has one from their line called Amazonbasics, sadly the black one is out of stock (only red available).
I'm waiting for that because it's cheap and from the reviews seems decent enough.

plus, I need screen protectors for the touch screen...I think proporta had one you could cut to size, adaptable to most devices. I'd prefer something made for the XL, we'll see what comes out.
As for the ac adapter, I strongly reccomend getting a usb to dsi cable. It's cheap, easily available (since it's not specific for 3ds or 3ds xl) and works fine with a wall plug adapter aswell.

I got mine on the 14th, I saved up some money and I was keeping an eye out for some gamestop deals. In the end I found a deal and got a blue XL. I really like the console, the screens are of course beautiful but the build itself is pretty nice overall. I wish they put it the second analog because I really want to play Resident Evil and Kid Icarus with it, guess I have to wait for the pad pro xl hoping it won't be hideous like the current CPP.
I have bought MK7 with it and I've just started playing around with it. The 3D effect is pretty cool, I find it almost subtle in mario kart and that's good because it's not the heart of the game, but it adds a little bit to it.
The Eurosport app is a good idea but without interesting content is just a waste of space. I mean, only 2 minutes WATTS? No news, highlights or anything? what the heck?
Downloaded a bunch of demos but it's a letdown that you have limited uses for them. On my ps3 I can play with them as long as I want, I wasn't expecting such a limitation on the 3ds but hey it's Ninty we're talking about :P:

For now I'm pretty pleased by the console, I am waiting for more games to come out. My most anticipated software is Paper Mario (with Luigi's Mansion sadly delayed to 2013), and more in the future I really look forward to Layton vs Ace Attorney. I wish more third party games were available, because pretty much all the games I'm considering are first party. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

PS: where's my f-n metroid game nintendo? WHERE IS IT??

EDIT: I forgot to say, about the charger I never owned a dsi or 3ds, I just got a usb-dsi charging cable for 4.90 off ebay and use it with a generic usb-ac adapter I already have. Works like a charm, and I can use it with everything, be it the wall plug, my computer or the external multi-purpose recharge-it-all battery pack I bought from amazon :D

This is the best podcast in the world, and I'm 2 for 2 as appearances on live shows!
the streak shall continue!  ;D

also, I finally managed to do the mario voice on air, even if I was super-excited and it didn't come out too good. Hope it was funny anyway :)

Still thanks to James, Karlie and TYP for helping me overcome the tech difficulties! Also, I'm glad Jonny remembered me being the first call-in on the previous live episode!

Thanks Jonny for the clarification about the time, so it's 8PM in the UK (and Spain&Portugal) and 9PM EST (Central Europe, Italy, France, Germany etc).
I'll be back at 9, can't wait to listen to the show and hopefully be able to call-in again :)

anyway I'd actually like Lindy to win, so he can talk about his new, wrapped games on his shelf during an episode of RFN  :cool;

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 236: Trauma Hunter
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:42:12 PM »
The discussion of Trauma Team makes me sad. At one point, it was one of my most anticipated games for Wii. Now, hopes that it will ever be localised in Europe are fading fast. If it's not too much trouble, I would like to ask Greg what he did to allow himself to play Excitebots, Kirby and Trauma Team on his PAL Wii.

making a pal wii region-free is actually quite easy and very rewarding :)
I've got both excitebots (for dirty cheap!) and trauma team because I got fed up with waiting.
Importing is legitimate defense, as I used to say in the gamecube days  :cool;

Yeah! I'm so happy when the new RFN gets released on Sunday night because this way I can start my week the right way: with some RFN podcasting goodness :)

kudos to Greg as always for the hard work with editing and posting the show!

I meant the City of the Dead under the Vatican, I think there are more in Italy too.

Do you mean the "Catacombe"? I've never been there. I was in Rome just last weekend (as I said I'm not far from there) and taking advantage of the free museums/monuments entry for the 150th birthday of our unification I went to the Colosseo (or colosseum as you say, using the latin word) and to the Fori Imperiali and to the Liberation Museum and then I remembered I have never been to the catacombe but it was too late.
I've been to the Popes'tombs under the Vatican and to S.Peter's tomb.

18
Have you ever been to the Necropolis?

I *hope* you mean in Fallout...  :P:

19
My father's side is from Bari, specifically here, and Firenze. My mother's side is from Rome and Napoli. I'd have to ask my wife, where her grandparents are from in particular - I can't quite remember.

Mola, like your surname :) coincidence?
That's very cool, by the way the place I live in is just between Roma and Napoli  ;D
Don't worry if you can't remember, it was just a curiosity.

20
I absolutely agree that you have to make your own to make it good :)

I didn't know you use to call it "gravy", anyway the same things happens here when a name even if it's not the most appropriate just sticks in the common use. Italian regions have many differences so it's common that the same thing gets a different name according to where you are in the country.

So you're of Italian heritage? that's great to hear :) where were your grandparents from?

Uh, marinara sauce is just what we call tomato sauce here in the US. I think it literally translates to sauce of the seafarers?

I've attached the file. Feel free to LOL  :P: :)

yes it's pretty much that. "Pasta alla marinara" literally translates to "seafarers' style pasta" and it's pasta (usually spaghetti or linguine) with seafood. It's actually pretty weird for me that you call tomato sauce "marinara", anyway I'm sure there are tons of English words that we in Italy use in weird ways aswell hehehe. We call tomato sauce "sugo di pomodoro" (it just means tomato sauce) and the one with meat in it "ragù di carne" (tomato and meat sauce) or "ragù alla bolognese" which you probably spell "bolonnaise" or something.

If you have any question (not just food related of course) I'd be happy to give you some first-hand info about Italy and anything related. There's too much misinformation floating around these days (and that sadly happens with US related stuff too).

22
Awesome, I want to hear this Mario impression.

Do you have a marinara sauce recipe?

I will post it here as soon as I find it!

No I don't have one because I very very very rarely eat pasta with seafood. Here's one I found anyway http://www.gustissimo.it/ricette/pasta-molluschi/spaghetti-alla-marinara.htm

 :cool;

23
so hello there, as you may already guess I got the famour PM too and the first thing that came to mind was "WTF?"
then I slowly realised.
Anyway here I am, I don't think anyone remembers but I'm the first caller during the RFN Live charity show, the guy from Italy that tried to make a joke about speaking like Mario but the call dropped and my impression didn't get recorded.
I also made an mp3 and sent it to Karl (thanks again for trying, man!) but it couldn't be put in the recording.
Sad, because I was going to give just what the people in the IRC wanted  ;D

(I still have that mp3, in case you're wondering  :cool; )

I joined the forum mainly because I love the RFN podcast and wanted to be a bit closer to the site aswell. I write for an Italian site about games retro and current, and I recently tried the 3ds (for that site) and we're soon starting a free PDF magazine in both Italian and English about retrogaming. maybe when it's out I should plug it here hehe!
I dream of starting a podcast of my own and being a guest in RFN since I immensely enjoyed being on the live show and talking to the guys, even though I was super-excited and could barely talk.

I can answer that, as I've never watched a 3D movie and I tried the 3DS for the first time last sunday.
with the AR game (target shooting) I tried I had some difficulties adjusting to 3d, but with zelda I had no problem at all, even looking back and forth between the top screen and the bottom (touch) screen. I found that setting the slider around the middle was a good setting for me and I wasn't feeling any extra stress on my eyes or anything. No headaches either!

Note that I have a very good eyesight and I don't wear glasses.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS Does Not Feature a Messaging System
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:34:31 PM »
they're planning to add several things at a later date...it feels a bit rushed, doesn't it?
I tried the 3DS two days ago during the "Discover Tour" that Nintendo of Europe is doing and I wasn't completely blown away. It has potential but I feel like the "wait and see" approach is the best one for now. I can't express an educated opinion because they only had an AR game and the zelda oot 3d demo available, so I tried only those two. I plan to go again on saturday in another location where they should have 8+ units and more software to show demos of.

I wish I could be a guest in an RFN episode and talk about that! :P
