The NFRIT - For the games NWR left out of March Madness
« on: March 11, 2014, 11:21:34 PM »
So if you're familiar with March Madness, you also know about the National Invitational Tournament (or NIT), which allows quality teams to enjoy postseason success even if they don't make the big dance.

In talking with local management (Neal, the conversation is on Connectivity 125), I found a grip of games that were quite frankly, shocking omissions from the tourney field. As such, I'd like to give those games a chance to shine.

The four play-in runners up will get automatically in, but I'd like to get this to 32 games if possible. So let's see your selections. One per person, make a case, and make it a good one.

Check for your game on this sheet before nominating. The only other rule is that the game has to come out in 1999 or later to be eligible, as a celebration of the site's 15th anniversary.

I was about to throw up a huge list, then I noticed you said one per person. I'll need to think about this a bit.

Wario Land: Shake It

The fact that Kirby's Epic Yarn is in the tournament while Wario Land isn't is pretty sickening to me considering Shake It was the much better Good Feel game.  So Wario Land: Shake It easily gets my nomination.

I'll just dump the other games that were up for Wild Card spots and missed out

Metroid Prime 2
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Mario Strikers Charged
Rhythm Heaven Fever
Excitebots
Metroid Prime Hunters
Professor Layton and the Last Specter
Harvest Moon 64
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Super Mario Deluxe

Eh, screw it, I'm breaking this "one per forumer" rule because I thought of two other games that were neglected: the Zelda Oracle games.  Phantom Hourglass gets a spot in the tourney but not these?  And the NWR forum Zelda rankings even put those games ahead of the DS Zeldas.

Really? Harvest Moon 64 was in the running? I didn't realize it came out that late. That one is still my favorite of the series.

Of Neal's list, I would want these:

Metroid Prime 2
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Rhythm Heaven Fever
Excitebots

Great games.

I'm playing through Shake It! right now and by golly it's so damn good.

However, I was personally shocked and appalled by the exclusion of Pikmin 3.

I was going to have to think about this until seeing that Harvest Moon 64 did indeed come out in 1999.  Best game in the series, was such a blast to play, best characters in any Harvest Moon game I've played, it expanded on what made the original great and added so much more, it's a shame that was left off the main tournament, though it probably wouldn't have made it far against more popular games.

On a side note, Natsume needs to announce a Harvest Moon game for Wii U...

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

Probably the only time the Wii held the definitive version of a sports title.

I agree about Tiger Woods, though I believe I have 11.  That game was without a doubt one of the best uses of motion controls.

6-Wario Land: Shake It

8-Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
9-Mario Strikers Charged
10-Rythm Heaven Fever
11-Excitebots Trick Racing
12-Metroid Prime Hunters
13-Professor Layton and the Last Specter
14-Harvest Moon 64
15-Animal Crossing: Wild World
16-Super Mario Deluxe
17-Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons
18-Dragon Quest IX
19-Pikmin 3
20-F-Zero GX

Henry Hatsworth. Probably to this day my favorite DS game.

EDIT: Also, since I'm the games biggest fan in the whole world, Mutant Mudds.

I can't believe I didn't realize that Okami didn't make it into March Madness.  That was one of my favorite Wii games.

How about Hotel Dusk and 999?  Both games had great stories, made good use of the DS hardware, and were very memorable experiences.

That would get us to 31. Now, there's one game I'm wondering if we should consider that got rejected for lack of an (official) US release, and that's Mother 3. I think it should be in, but if not I do have one other game that a certain Z Miller is badgering me to include (Beyond Good and Evil).

I very much am behind having Beyond Good and Evil in. I am surprised that I didn't think of it either. It is right behind Okami in the "how could they forget that?" category.

So aside from the Elite 4...
5-Conker's Bad Fur Day
6-Wario Land: Shake It
7-Metroid Prime 2: Echos
8-Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
9-Mario Strikers Charged
10-Rythm Heaven Fever
11-Excitebots Trick Racing
12-Metroid Prime Hunters
13-Professor Layton and the Last Specter
14-Harvest Moon 64
15-Animal Crossing: Wild World
16-Super Mario Deluxe
17-Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons
18-Dragon Quest IX
19-Pikmin 3
20-F-Zero GX
21-The World Ends With You
22-Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
23-Kirby: Canvas Curse
24-Okami
25-World of Goo
26-Boom Blox
27-Trauma Center: Under the Knife
28-Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure
29-Mutant Mudds
30-Hotel Dusk
31-999
32-Mother 3
33-Beyond Good and Evil
34-Picross 3D

Two of the games above have to go... I know which ones I'd personally cut (hint: they start with "Metroid") but is there anything above that we should cut? I'd like to start the voting on Friday if at all possible, and there's still brackets to draw up.

Also, I recall Tiger Woods 10 reviewed better so should we go with that one?
