The EA Monopoly?
« on: December 20, 2004, 09:44:58 AM »
What's up with Electronic Arts? First they buy the ENTIRE NFL franchise, effectively eliminating all competition, including the oh-so-close-you're-almost-as-good-as-Madden ESPN sports franchise (not that it mattered to us Cube owners) but now they bought a huge 20% chunk from Ubi Soft? Are they trying to gain a monopoly on the market (duh)? I expected Microsoft to do this, but EA is filling that spot in nicely. This is bad for the market. Competiveness breeds innovation. Will EA buy out other sports, including NBA or MLB or NHL? I'm surprised EA hasn't offered Nintendo a "good fair" price...
"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token..."
--Edgar Allen Poe, The Raven, 1845.

To liberals everywhere: HA!

This just in... EA just bought the rights to the word "Monopoly". Parker Brothers is also ordered to pay a steep fine to EA for every copy of the board game "Monopoly" it has sold over the past century. Also, EA's bought the rights to World Wars I and II, as well as the Vietnam conflict. And they also bought the moon. It will be carved into the EA logo, which will be seen from all over the earth, so that everyone will know that EA is watching you and all resistance will be crushed swiftly and harshly.

EA own's the second most amount of stock.......  right?

Check out this link -=Gamespot.com=-

It appears that it this was taken as a hostile takeover, and Ubisoft didn't even hear about it until the saw it on the internet

Rayman DS will now have a new final level where you have to go out and buy The Urbz DS or the Rayman cart will blow up, wiping out everything that's not made by EA within a million miles.

Yes, thank god indeed, at least the NBA has some sence of sportsmanship and decency.

I heard the reason the NBA refused is that unlike with the NFL there's no one game like Madden that dominates sales.  So financially the NBA benefits more from having multiple companies making NBA games.

I don't know how many people here read The Wall Street Journal (very few, I imagine), but there was an excellent article today regarding EA's exclusive deal with the NFL.  Two tidbits I hadn't read before are (A) EA paid more than $400 million for the NFL rights(5-year deal) and (B) they paid over $800 million for the rights to the ESPN name (15-year deal).  This is the first time I've seen a dollar amount mentioned with either of these deals.  It was also mentioned that Take Two paid between $200 and $300 million for the seven-year deal with MLB.

There were also a few really great quotes such as:
Quote

(Referring to releasing updated versions every year) "You can put three more drops of perspiration on a forehead" of a player "and you've got $50" - Carl Yankowski, chief executive of publisher Majesco Entertainment Co.
and (my favorite)
Quote

"We play hard" - Frank Gibeau, EA's senior vice president of North American marketing, seated in a conference room labeled "Resistance is Futile"

Sorry for dredging up an old topic.  I didn't want to create a new one, and this was the most recent thread I could find on the subject.

Yeah. Why would you want the sole rights to the NFL for your yearly Madden franchise (not to mention sole rights to Madden) when you could have the Rare squad pumping out 2 titles every single console generation?

Knowing EA that means Valve will get an offer they can't refuse within the next twelve months. EA is powerful, VERY powerful, they could probably even pressure Valve.
