Staff Sez #12: The Many Moments of 2012

Our highs (and lows) of the year that was.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/32917

Now that we've survived into the new year, it's time to take ourselves right back to 2012. These are just a few of the things we remember most, good and bad, from last year.

Tyler "Out with the old" Ohlew:

Platinum Games. Wonderful 101. Hideki Kamiya. My life is complete.

Alex "Confetti" Culafi:

Why did Miyamoto have to ruin Sticker Star?

Andrew "Bubbly" Brown:

Kid Icarus: Uprising—most surprisingly impressive voice acting last year!

Tom "Midnight" Malina:

2012's wave of Japanese rhythm games revitalised the dying genre.

Neal "Resolutions" Ronaghan:

The disappointment that was Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

Andy "Auld Lang Syne" Goergen:

Favorite: Off-TV Play. Least Favorite: Except with Virtual Console.

Zack "Kiss cam" Kaplan:

Reggie saying, "I feel like a purple Pikmin." Classic Reginator.

Josh "Ghost of Dick Clark" Max:

When we got on the Wii U hype train. WOOWOO!

Carmine "Father Time" Red:

Playing Funky Barn: realizing review scores don't dictate my fun.

J.P. "Cork poppin'" Corbran:

Ignoring my backlog for a fourth playthrough of Mutant Mudds.

Justin "New Year's baby" Berube:

Least Favorite: Trying to collect all the Kid Icarus cards.

Some highs:
Mario Party 9 was refreshing and fun
The 3DS XL mostly fixed the 3DS issues

The low:
Not much happened on the Wii front.

I actually liked Sticker Star... Until I remembered how good the other Paper Mario games were.

Wow... not much love for Sticker Star, is there?  Seems to be the most common theme for 2012 disappointment.

High: Resident Evil Revelations being a great game (despite a couple of rough patches).
Low: Everything else related to Resident Evil released this year.

High: 3DS eShop was the best thing happening on 3DS, with a very strong end of year lineup.
Low: 3DS retail releases were underwhelming for the first two-thirds of the year, and that's being generous. The last third was only marginally better.

High: Some real gems in the final year of Wii support - Xenoblade, The Last Story, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Mario Party 9.
Low: Still a handful of (already translated) solid Wii games that will never come out in North America - Fatal Frame, Pandora's Tower, Another Code R.

High: Xenoblade finally gets localized for North America.

Low: Continuing the unfortunate trend of recent Nitnendo consoles, the Wii is practically abandoned by Nintendo for about a year before its successor comes out.  The most notable Wii releases were older titles that NOA dragged their feet on until someone else got involved.  If NOA released those rainfall games in a more timely manner Mario Party 9 would have been pretty much it for the whole year.

The high points: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Kid Icarus, Crimson Shroud, Nintendoland, Mutant Mudds, Resident Evil; Revelations.
The low points: Entitled gamers, especially in regards to Sticker Star, Dark Souls, launch titles, and the like, weak 3DS Retail, relatively weak VC all around, lack of original ideas and the dreaded "4th installment" rearing it's ugly head, and the absurd journalism regarding the Wii U.
