I've been on the fence about this one, chiefly because I'm a solitary gamer and have little use for multiplayer affairs. But the single player modes seem real meaty, so I may pick this up at some point after the holidays.

The Pokémon discussion was interesting. See, I AM a Pokémaniac, but I don't play the games for the story or the environment. I play for competitive and ever since XY, Game Freak has been making it super easy to breed competitive teams, something for which I am eternally grateful. I'm even breeding shinies with perfect IVs, **** is dope. What I would like in the next games is to be able to purchase special competitive hold items with normal currency rather than forcing me to go through that Battle Frontier stuff. As soon as I beat the E4, I want to jump right into online battling immediately. And bring back easy leveling tactics, I miss the Blissey bases from ORAS so much. Grinding for evolution and moves is a total pain.

5
I'm annoyed that they just didn't make all the Mega Stones available from the start. Mega Evolutions are central to the competitive metagame and it really sucks when you're teambuilding and realize that the Mega you want on your team doesn't have its stone available. I ran into this problem months ago when I was building a team around Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar, only to find that Tyranitar's stone wasn't released.

Screw you guys, Sunshine is the best 3D Mario game. I don't understand the control and camera complaints, I've never had any issues. In fact, I think that Mario controls better here than every other 3D Mario. The controls are so fluid yet tight when they need to be. Hell, during that secret mission in Delphino Plaza where you have to steer the lily pad down the poison river and collect the red coins, if I didn't get them all in one go, I just jump onto the ledge outside the river and run straight back to the start and get on another lily pad. That's how easy and precise this game controls. The only thing I didn't like about this game is the blue coin collectathon. Other than that, perfect game.

I don't care what anyone says, Echoes was the best Fire Emblem on 3DS and one of the best I've ever played. Awakening was novel, I'll give it that, but the Pair Up mechanic broke the game and the whole children thing was kind of messy. They completely stole the limelight from other interesting and unique characters because they were OP as the living ****. The story was a bit over the top as well. Fates, Fates was a train wreck. It was basically created as Awakening 2: Electric Boogaloo. The story made no sense and was full of plotholes and the entire game felt so contrived. I like a good story in my Fire Emblem, makes the battles feel more real and progression more meaningful.

Echoes, while a remake of Gaiden, felt both fresh and familiar. It felt to me like a return to form. The story, while comparatively "simple", didn't feel esoteric and nonsensical. The writing was fantastic and the voice acting really resonated with me. I haven't been as invested in a Fire Emblem story since Binding Blade. They brought back the Support system of the GBA games and the Fatigue system of Thracia 776, it had a little bit of everything from the old games. It was a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned, currently top contender for my game of the year.

As for future Fire Emblem games, keep the voice acting, make the plot believable, take risks as James said, remove that stupid waifu simulator support system unless it's like a remake of Genealogy where it made sense, and get rid of the avatar. I like my lords as actual people, not insert-myself-here vessels. I want to be invested in their struggles, in their world. I can't do that with avatars. Or just remake Genealogy/Thracia or Binding Blade/Blazing Blade. That would work, too.

I've been keeping my eye on this one. Pikmin is one Nintendo series that has never clicked with me, but this one looks to be right up my alley!

I'd actually list the lack of romance support as a positive. I really didn't like Waifu Emblem at all. Glad to see this game keeping its old school roots.

Great read, Daan! So excited for this, Fire Emblem Echoes is really shaping up to be my Game of the Year. May 19th cannot get here quick enough!

This is really annoying. I don't have a PS4 or an Xbox and my PC can barely manage to run N64 games let alone anything modern. I can't believe they don't even have an idea when the Switch version will be ready. Whatever happened to being such big Nintendo fans that the Nintendo version was being worked on personally? Wii U technical problems my ass.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 500: Wouldn't It Be an Auditory Rash?
« on: December 06, 2016, 06:20:30 PM »
Good show, guys. I've only been listening to the show for the past few years but it is, by a wide margin, my favourite Nintendo podcast, period. Some people complain that you guys are too jaded and pessimistic, buy that's precisely why I love the show. Because it's when at your most critical and pessimistic that you're also at your most insightful. As a cynical and sardonic person myself, I can appreciate the realistic analyses and self-deprecataing humour. Other shows like Nintendo Voice Chat are annoyingly optimistic and superficial by comparison. It's almost as if they compromise perspicacity for professionalism. That's not to say that you guys aren't professional, you just don't let it get in the way of real opinions and insights. Keep up the awesome work, here's to 500 more! May God have mercy on your souls.

This is actually really exciting. A group of us from the forums used SwapNote on a daily basis to just chat about games and life. It was fun and we were all sad when it was shut down. This is awesome news!
Why couldn't you just use this forum for that? :(

Because I have severe social anxiety issues that extend to the internet and SwapNote/Swapdoodle conversations are closed and only involve a few familiar people.

TalkBack / Re: Super Mario Maker Coming To 3DS
« on: September 07, 2016, 12:42:27 PM »
I am so down for this. I don't have the creativity or patience to sit down and actually create levels, so the lack of level sharing has literally zero impact on me. However, I love the 100 Mario Challenge, that's where the meat of the game is for me. I hardly touch Mario Maker Wii U, or really the console itself, anymore because of how much of a pain it is to load everything up. With my 3DS, I just open it up and jump right in. I am very much looking forward to a quick, streamlined Mario Maker experience.

$42 for Picross in Canada, have they been holed up in a shed huffing paint thinner?? I know that the Canadian dollar is tanking but even that price is egregious and downright prohibitive. I like Picross as much as the next person, but I ain't shelling out close to $50 taxes included for it.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo World Report E3 Streaming Schedule

Decent! I was debating on which site to follow throughout E3 and this post just made the decision for me. As independent volunteers, your guys' reactions and opinions are genuine and unfiltered in addition to being very analytical. I don't really trust the opinions of paid journalists in the industry, which is why I vastly prefer RFN, Connectivity, and The Famicast to every other high quality gaming podcast out there. You guys are brutally honest and I love it. Looking forward to the streams!

I don't have the time to play anything other than Nintendo, man. I never really understood people's issues with Nintendo's frequent software droughts. Even with the release schedules on 3DS and Wii U, there has never been a time where I've had nothing to play. I still have pretty substantial backlog to get through. Hell, I haven't even started Xenoblade X despite having owned it since Christmas. It's actually more often the case I find myself saying that there are too many games to play!

$12 CAD for a SNES game, I will never get over that ridiculous nonsense. That being said, I am considering EarthBound as much as it pains me to say. I'm out of the house 12 hours a day for work and have a relatively active social life, so most of my gaming is done on my 3DS during my long transit, lunch break, and in bed. I hardly have the time of day to even turn my Wii U on. Maybe this time I'll manage to play EarthBound through to completion! Though I'm still only in the early chapters of my second Fire Emblem campaign and I do intend on getting Revelation once I eventually finish it. Too many RPGs, not enough time...

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem and the 'Way Games Should be Played'
« on: March 09, 2016, 08:08:36 PM »
I think a big driving issue behind the elitist attitude some people seem to have has to do with deeper personality and identity disturbances. In my experience, the people who are most likely to get upset over such trivial matters as how someone else, entirely independent of themselves, plays a damn video game have a stark lack of basic social skills in general. Back when games were still a niche passtime and considered nerdy, a lot of us were bullied by otherwise "normal" jock-type people. "Hmph, fine, they just don't get it like I do," and "They're just too stupid to understand, I'm much smarter than they are, " might be common internal responses. This more or less served to stunt the development of interpersonal skills and caused those affected to regress into themselves and almost put their passtime on a pedestal. Their games became their identity, who they are as individuals. The thought of what makes them special and unique being enjoyed by everyone and their dog disturbs them on a fundamental level. Who they are is suddenly commonplace, they cease to exist as an individual. When they get all elitist, it's a defense mechanism to protect that very fragile sense of self. That's what I think, anyway. It's nothing more than conjecture but it's interesting to think about.

Yeah, okay. But what about Pokémon Z?? Did those Zygarde forms in Coro Coro really amount to nothing game related? What about the XYZ anime? Is that really not going to be tied to anything? Is this Gen VII now or will it somehow tie into X and Y? I'm profoundly confused.

I firmly believe that Zelda is being moved to NX and that the two will launch November 24 of 2017. But I'm just a jaded pessimist. Prove me wrong, Nintendo. It would be pretty cool if you did, but I don't expect that you will.
