I guess gameplay to gameplay Yoshi's Island is probably better, but I'm probably letting the amazing music of Sonic 2 put it higher (inferior sound hardware my ass, Sonic 2 was the best game soundtrack ever, and Casino Night Zone is top 3 all time game songs (Tecmo Bowl main theme and Zelda overworld are the others, which means I've got all three on the VC)) Maybe it was the Blast Processing, it must have been that...

And we need Mario Party 3 on the VC, I demand the return of duel mode! Also, some of the Genesis Disney games, like Aladdin and The Lion King (and maybe Toy Story). They probably won't be anywhere near as good as they seemed back then, though (but I pulled out Lion King and played it a couple years ago and it was pretty good, and Aladdin keeps popping up on "best licensed games" lists). And, why the hell not, Hey You, Pikachu! with DS connectivity for the Microphone.

Remember, I spent 5 years in the wilds of GameFAQs, if I can handle myself there, I can manage this.

Also, for the VC, I want Mario Tennis on the N64, the GC one was ruined by power shots (and the GBA version, I recently pulled out the GBC version and realized just how fantastic it was, probably my favorite pre-GBA Game Boy game (unless you count Tetris, which I don't, since it's appeared on every platform ever). And how did we ever miss Yoshi's Island on the SNES, the greatest platformer on the SNES and 2nd best of the 16 bit era (Sonic 2).

I agree that reviews would be better without concrete scores, oftentimes the score isn't entirely decided by the reviewer and is more decided by the site or magazine to fit with their scale; I've heard games being reviewed and the reviewer suggests a score but the site lowers the score, because the reviewer's score was higher than such-and-such game, and they couldn't have that. A lot of gamers will also just look at the number, or put too much meaning in the number and not pay attention to the review itself. I often read reviews where the points listed would have led me to a higher or lower score than the one given. I believe Computer Gaming World switched to this scale, but they lost me as a subscriber when they changed their name, because the Mac user in me won't let me subscribe to a magazine called Games for Windows.

Actually I don't trust reviews that give 10s.  Much less very high 9s.

Most games are not perfect, and can be improved upon.  An 8 or higher to me is worth buying, but remember to take in consideration if it is your type of game.

Matt really does care about his reviews and reputation as a reviewer more than many of the other IGN writers who I have seen give 9s out just for graphics.

I would not give any game released on the Wii yet a 10...and I dunno if I ever will, though Mario Galaxy might get up there.

A 10 (or 5 or 100 or 40 or A+ or 17 or whatever the best possible score is) doesn't mean the game is perfect; no game is perfect. High 9s aren't very common on most sites, and generally a sign of real quality. I agree nothing on the Wii has been 10-worthy yet, and I also think Galaxy is going to make a good run at it.

EDIT: Does anyone know if Strikers is playable online across continental lines? I have a friend in England who has the game already and was hoping we could exchange codes and have at it. Nintendo's promotional materials seem to suggest NA only for random matches, but I haven't seen anything specific for friend matches.

Yeah, I found the packrat stat, it is extremely useful. The more I play this game the more I like it. I do have a love of this type of game, and it's not for everyone, but if you at all enjoy these types of games, this one's pretty good. I said I'd give it a 7 earlier, now I'd bump that up to about 7.5, with the possibility of 8.0. Online co-op would have been really cool, especially since I could have hooked up with Kairon and therat and tried that; I don't have a lot of people around me who are even remotely gamers most of the time, but I'll bet this one is great co-op.

To those arguing about the price point, you may have a decent point. I am enjoying it and don't regret buying it for $50, but some might. I'd advise at least a rental, though, and maybe pick it up if the price drops a bit. Like I said, it may not look the greatest, but it's fun.

Well on the Genesis side we need Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Vectorman 1 & 2, and Phantasy Stars II, III, and IV, off the top of my head.

How big would said can of worms be? Should I be taking precautions such as arming myself or hoarding canned goods for the ensuing apocalypse?

Really, how is that statement controversial? Would you say that it is impossible for something to be funny if it were stupid? If so I would like to know what you find funny, as at least some level of stupidity in some form or another is present in nearly all comedy.

TalkBack / RE: EA Admits To Focusing Development On The Wrong Console
« on: July 28, 2007, 03:23:34 AM »
They've been great to the Wii. In my opinion Madden was the best example of motion controls at launch, they simply nailed them. Ubisoft may have had the most games, but they didn't seem to put much effort into them (Red Steel felt like they were trying, but ran out of time; it was confirmed a launch title more than a year before launch and I think they just underestimated the time they would need. It sold well enough to guarantee a sequel, though, so hopefully they can show us what the game was supposed to be.)

EA has had some real quality releases, with controls that weren't just shoehorned in and actually made the game better and more fun (Madden, Godfather, etc.). Everyone always says that EA doesn't innovate and just rehashes things (especially in regard to their sports franchises), but the Wii support they've shown so far makes me laugh at those who say that. Even Madden, the lightning rod for gamer hatred that it is, is getting real effort for the first time on a Nintendo platform, with 08 having the controls even further refined, a new party mode, the telestrator (awesome), Wii Sports-like Family control options, and, to top it all off, online play (only 4 years behind everyone else!).

In addition to Madden, FIFA will be online with equally intriguing motion controls, and NBA Live has the motion controls as well while I haven't heard anything about whether or not it will be Wi-Fi enabled. Also, MySims looks fantastic, I absolutely love the building mechanic, something that would be a lot tougher without the Wiimote.

Keep the goodness coming, EA!

And not to mention the RareWare stuff that could be coming (DK64, Goldeneye). So far we've gotten less than one N64 game a month, and all of them have been first party! Guess what? My favorite N64 games aren't first party. THESE are my favorite N64 games.

The best month of VC releases would have any SquareEnix title from the old days, and any one of these beautiful N64 games. (And my all-time favorite game ever, Harvest Moon for SNES, but that's not happening). Stupid Nintendo and their piecemeal sonofabitch plan for making me wait.

There are too many N64 racing games on the VC right now with Mario Kart, F-Zero, and soon to be Wave Race (yes, they're all great, but how about some variety?) but it would be soooo awesome if they released Star Wars Episode I Racer (hands down the best thing to come out of the prequels, including the movies), and definitely Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron, too. I would love Harvest Moon (64 or the SNES original) but it's way too niche to come to the VC, at least any time soon.

PS: I agree with the Adam Sandler remark for his recent stuff, but are you seriously going to sit here and say that Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore weren't funny (stupid, yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean it can't be funny)?

I was a huge fan of Phantasy Star Online, the original one, back before they charged monthly fees for it.

This game is a lot like that, in a really good way. There are a few annoying points, like the fact that I have to keep investing my level-up points into Strength to increase my carrying capabilities, and that the in-game directions for the stat-increasing and treasure chest-opening minigames are a bit cconfusing. The camera is annoying in how it's a bit too stiff and hard to remember the right way to do it in the heat of combat, but it would be a lot worse if it were looser and you could easily make it change accidentally, so that's at least something in it's favor.

I would give it a 7, which could increase a bit as I get more used to some of the quirky things.

I'm not a staffer, though I probably wouldn't turn down a job were it offered to me

I just decided to get back into a forum type thing after taking a break for a while. I guess by today's showing I jumped in with two feet a bit too quickly. I used to frequent GFaqs (I checked today, I've been a member there for a little over 5 years and in that time I amassed 1330 karma, which means in those 5 years there were 1330 days in which I posted at least once), but I grew tired of the stupidity and insanity (some insanity is good, but the level there was off the charts). I've been a bit of a lurker here for a while; I have the site as one of my home page tabs and rely on it for news, and I have occasionally posted in talkback. From what I've observed the level of insanity is (usually) within accepatble ranges and the overall intelligence of the users is exponentially greater (even you, Mashiro ). I hope to remain active here, I like the way this site is and the people seem great (though nearly any random group of humans is better company than the GFaqs crowd). Hopefully I won't be quite as controversial in the future, at least not on too regular a basis, and I hope I haven't made too bad of a first impression. I guess I'll see you all around the fora.

EDIT PS: It is now Friday (at least on the East Coast) and still no VC Mondays.

It shouldn't be that way, no, but you have to realize that it is that way to a certain point. It's not the best way, but it is how it works. It's a bit of both. You keep calling this a lazy port; the only way it's lazy is the graphics, which is one of the hardest, most expensive, and most time consuming things to improve. Would it be nice if it looked better? Sure, of course it would. Would it make the game any more enjoyable for me? Not really, as I said you can't really pay too much attention to the graphics anyway. It's a solid game, and I don't in any way regret the purchase.

This is nearly completely unrelated, but my mind keeps going to Francis in Super Paper Mario, as I'm arguing passionately on a message board about a game I haven't played that much. We've been doing quite a bit of work on some home renovation projects and I've only been able to get a few hours in with the game. From what I've played however, I love it.

It could go either way. And like I said, I'm not suggesting we buy garbage. Alien Syndrome is not garbage. It may not look very good, but it plays well. It's not a crappy port, it's a very enhanced port, just not in the graphics department.

The whole supporting third parties thing wasn't all about this game. It was about supporting third-party development on the Wii period. If you don't want to buy this game, that's fine, but try to support third parties in some way. It's the way I think and rant, something spirals into something much bigger and I don't give much of an indication that it's moved beyond the original topic. I'll work harder to prevent that in the future.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: review alien syndrome already!!!

It's not something that should be encouraged, but if the game is fun you shouldn't refuse to buy it because it has (really really) bad graphics.

The way I see it, PSP ports are better than nothing at all. I have two games that also showed up on the PSP, this and Heatseeker, and I enjoyed them both. As long as they improve the gameplay, which they did in both instances with very cool controls, and it's good, I buy it.

The developers (read: publishers) won't take poor sales as signs the game wasn't good, they'll take them as signs the Wii userbase doesn't want games like this and go back to making safe minigame collections. On the other side of that, if it does moderately well it may encourage them to put more effort and resources into their next Wii project.

I'm not saying rush out and buy every PSP port, but you shouldn't automatically dismiss a game because of that either. Nintendo has the attention of all the third parties right now, it would be best to try and retain that attention. This is a solid effort in everything but graphics. If it does at least moderately well we may keep the publisher's interest long enough to get another game, hopefully designed from the ground up on the Wii.

We haven't really seen anything like that yet, everything so far has been ported from something or another at some stage of development or been merely a minigame collection (which have their place too, I have and enjoy Rayman and WarioWare, but I don't want every other game on the console to be minigames). Mario Strikers was most likely Wii the whole way through, and it looks significantly better (graphics wise) than anything before it. Then Metroid comes next month. A game that proves the Wii can do a great action game, that it can do something epic, and shows that the machine is hardly a "GameCube 1.5" in terms of graphics.

If we can talk a publisher into letting a developer do a fullblown Wii exclusive, which shouldn't be too hard when you show them the sales figures, we'll see what they can do. If a publisher waited til the Wii was a bona fide hit and then started development on a real huge game it will be at least a year before we see it. This year we've got the (hugely great) showing from Nintendo and a few third parties who realized what Nintendo had on their hands soon enough. People have said Nintendo doesn't have much themselves next year, using all their aces this year. The strategy will work because by next fall we'll start to see what real third-party games that started life on the Wii can look like and play like; Nintendo won't be as needed because the third parties will start to shine.

Sorry about the rant, I just think that Nintendo has been hurting in the third-party area since the SNES, and we've finally got them back. Don't screw it up.

Exactly, most people can't get past the PSP caliber graphics. Actually, even then it's not something everyone will like, but I sure as hell do. This is a great 3rd party effort with the controls, but they lost a lot of sales and review points by not really improving the graphics. But if you can look past the graphics (and in a game like this if you're looking at the graphics and not focused on the action for more than half a second you won't last long) you'll find a game style that's been done before, only with the best targeting controls you could hope for.

Yeah I seem to be a bit different from the normal Nintedo fan. I have 30+ each on DS and GameCube, and more than half on each are third-party, and 8 of my 12 (non Wii Sports) Wii games so far are 3rd party. 14 of the 23 releases for the rest of this year that are currently on my list are third-party. I have no idea where all this money is going to come from. At least I won't be able to put too much more into the Virtual Console, which I've already spent about $280 on because now I have only slightly higher than 100 blocks left on my Wii, so I can maybe funnel some of what would have gone to that into new stuff (this won't happen, there is no way to stop me from spending all my money on the VC).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Heroes of Mana

Most of what I've read say the game is great except for its horrible AI, and any genre fan will tell you that that alone can kill a RTS game. Not the opponent AI, but the pathfinding AI for your own troops, which is even worse, because the opponent will get you because your troops don't go the way they should. They do say that some maps, simpler ones without many sharp turns or stuff in the way, don't have many problems with the AI because of the simpler geometry.

I have that Monopoly game, I got it right after it came out. I don't think I'd sell it. I really like Monopoly but never really have the time or other people to play it. This game gives me a full Monopoly with no real glitches, decent AI, and a save system, in portable form. Add to that that I also like the other 3 games and you've got a great package of board games. Now all I need is a DS game of Risk, as my GBA version doesn't have a save feature and the AI sucks. I know there are plenty of strategy games on the DS, with more to come, and I have most of them and am planning to get most of the new ones, but nothing would be cooler than a real game of Risk (except maybe if somehow Sillysoft created a version of Lux for the DS with Wi-Fi support to download user-created and new add-on maps).

I think you mean renowned, but this isn't about spelling and grammar. There is absolutely no way any Sim City fan would say the original is the best. That honor goes to either 2000 or 4, depending on which way you want to go with judging it. SC2k is easiest to get into and most immediately fun, but 4 has incredible, unbelievable depth, and if you can get a big city up and running well it's quite an accomplishment. I bought SimCity on the VC hoping it would be great (back when the selection wasn't near as good as it currently is) and I couldn't get into it because I'm so used to the newer games. If you are new to the series this would probably be a fine place to start, but 2K would be even better, and could most likely be found in discount software sections of stores for about the same price, and would run on any PC made in the past 10 years.

You got me there with Earthbound, which is odd because it's a game I'm dying to play and can't wait for the VC release. Though the only thing standard about it is the battle system, and even then it's just the core mechanics, which might be what threw me. Zelda II is in no way a standard RPG, yes it has leveling and the like, but it's really a 2D action platformer with an overworld. Pokemon is a standard RPG, but plots for world domination don't necessarily have to completely mesh with the philosophy  (I love the games, but come on, 2 nearly identical versions? Who sold their soul to Satan for that fiendishly evil and brutally effective marketing scheme?)

I really want to play SMRPG. I never had an SNES, I had a Genesis back then and by the time I decided to get something new the N64 had been out a while. SMRPG and Earthbound were at the top of my list going into the VC, as pretty much everything else I was interested got ported to the GBA (so did Earthbound, actually, but Nintendo wanted to be mean and not release that collection in English, odd because they had already translated both games into English, as long as you believe the rumor that the Earthbound Zero ROM floating around out there used an actual Nintendo translation. There's a kind-of-funny story about that, in that Nintendo decided not to release Mother I and the original Fire Emblem in America due to the low sales of a little game called Final Fantasy.)

I would definitely recommend Super Paper Mario, the flipping between dimensions and Pixl abilities make for some pretty interesting (and sometimes tough) puzzles, and the writing is spectacular. Hilarious writing, in particular the whole Francis part and anything with Bowser, who has some great meta-joke style lines in your first encounter with him.

As for Dream course, it is amazingly fun, possibly the most fun I've ever had with a game I'm this bad at

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official "Virtual Console Mondays" Thread

Well part of why I like Paper Mario is it's not like normal RPGs (I like those too, just in a different way).

Calling it "My First RPG" is kind of missing the point. It's not supposed to be a standard RPG. Nintendo doesn't make standard RPGs, it goes against their (Miyamoto's) entire philosophy (Fire Emblem doesn't count, its tactical elements allow it to fit the philolsophy). The philosophy puts gameplay, and immediate reaction and consequences to player action, first. Since they bought controlling interest in Monolith this may change a bit, but you won't see it in the first-party developers.

I think you may be letting your disappointment that it isn't a true follow-up to SMRPG get you into thinking it's horrible. It's a different kind of game, intentionally. It shows the difference between a Square game and a Nintendo game. I, for one, love the more lighthearted and playful, funny story, especially in TTYD and Super because Treehouse improved over time. They manage to be genuinely funny in a way that many games try to be but very few get right. The combat, unlike most RPGs, keeps you on your toes and remains engaging throughout the game.

I realize SMRPG has equippable items like a standard RPG. That really doesn't fit into the Mario universe for me unless it's done like Mario & Luigi where it's just new pants and the like. I was asking about the badge system in Paper Mario specifically, which allows for quite a bit of customization (not just special moves, there are some really cool, and really odd things you can do with badges) and a bit of a strategic element with the badge points in a very simple way.

You say SMRPG is more of an RPG than Paper Mario, which is probably true, but I don't necessarily count that as a negative for Paper Mario. You say SMRPG has fantastic graphics, and from what I've seen it does, but I also really like the style of the Paper Mario games. You seem to be judging it in a way that's not really the way it's intended. In the same way that Metroid Prime isn't really a first-person shooter and Smash Bros. isn't really a fighter, Paper Mario isn't really an RPG. Nintendo seems to not consider the genre as a constraint, but as a decent jumping-off point. The only Nintendo franchise that squarely fits into a genre is Mario, and that's only because the genre (platformer) was created and named after Super Mario Bros.

I will definitely check out SMRPG when it hits the VC (that is if I have the blocks, my Wii's internal memory is nearly full, maybe ~120 blocks), but I don't expect (or necessarily want) it to be like Paper Mario.

BTW, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Mario & Luigi games, which are a bit more RPG like and have a few interesting new characters, and also Super Paper Mario, which drops nearly every RPG aspect.

Oh, and while this is kind of on topic, to be a little more on-topic, when is this week's VC Mondays coming? It was a pretty good week, I bought Kirby's Dream Course and am loving it and I would have bought Shining force if the AI was better and the battle system wasn't a total joke.

I have no intention of just buying it; I would definitely rent it first. There's probably no way I'd get around to it anyway, I have a list with games I want between now and the end of the year, and I'm still adding to it, especially on the DS side, and I have 16 Wii games (plus Stirkers and Metroid that I've already pre-ordered) and about 10 on the DS sidel; I could have had a lot more honorable mentions but my post was long enough as it is.
