Ummm...

So, what are the chances that both Daniel Solem and Zhen Yu Li are stranded on an uninhabited desert island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (an uninhabited desert island that doesn't have a net connection!) and I'm in 3rd place?  Pretty good, right?  Eh?

Let's see if I can make a 'Lost'-esque conspiracy theory out of this -

Daniel Solem's initials - DS?
Zhen Yu Lite?
DS in first place, Lite in second place -
But it won't be released in the U.S. in June!

Daniel Solem and Zhen Yu Li are being held hostage by Satoru Iwata until they're put up for a ransom of $1300,00.00 in June - someone contact Jack Bauer!

Wow - that would be terrible!

Why don't you post the winner's entry (and the runners-up), and then surely somebody will see it and let the winner know they've got an e-mail waiting!

I hate to suggest it... because I think it would work so if I were the runner up then I would miss out on winning the contest, and I wouldn't get a DSLite, and I would be stuck with my old DS which hurts really badly to play due to my weird thumb joints... but then again, what are the chances that I would be the runner up anyway?

I really hope you'll take my idea rather than just going on to the runner-up before publishing the results - I can barely think of anything more frustrating than missing out on something like this just because of an e-mail address mixup or an extended absence!

Is this just a new announcement of a partnership that's been going on for a while, or have they just begun to collaborate?

I ask because if it's the latter, then hopefully with their combined expertise they can figure out a way to solve the issues all the people at E3 were having.  It seemed like overall the impression was that the technology was great, but needed a bit of a boost to be fully acceptable in a real-world gaming situation.  Hopefully with PixArt's help they can get this technology perfected before release =D because if the control isn't perfect, or as near perfect as is reasonable, then the whole concept of the Wii is kind of worthless... it's not exactly immersive control if you have to angle the controller awkwardly downward, or sit at an exact distance, or limit your motion to the area of the TV screen, or avoid moving the controller at high speeds, is it?

Looking forward to PGC's hands-on impressions as the technology evolves and the Wii comes closer to release =)

This has turned into a religious discussion, so I'm not going to attempt to actually convince ShawnSt3r of anything, but to amuse myself, I'm going to summarize his argument:

(1) Masturbation is bad because the Bible says so -> (2) The US government should ban it from shelves

Whether or not religion and the government are required to stay 100% separate, this IS a first pillar 1st amendment violation, and the Bible is no legal justification for the government to take such an action.  I don't know how much more clear this could be.

(1) might be true, and (2) might be true, too, but (1) -> (2) is impossible under our system, and is a blow to the rights of all Americans.

I can anticipate that some parties might disagree with me, and this probably is going to fan the flames, and I'm not one to engender hate or distaste among people, but I just needed to say this...

Nothing is assumed to be understood under the Constitution.  That's why we have a Supreme Court of the Land - it's for them to decide what the constitution means and doesn't mean, not for some bible-thumper who thinks he knows these things.  Go become a Supreme Court Justice, then when you try to make your case you'll be up against people who actually have the TIME to look things up and prove you wrong.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion - your case that God should not be completely divorced from government is absolutely false because of this.  If Congress signs into law something that is religiously-motivated or religious-oriented, that is unconstitutional, and should be (and will be) struck down.  This is what "separation of Church and State" means.  This is one of the fundamental protections Americans have under our system, and it would sure as hell be a shame to throw it away because "The founding fathers ASSUMED the government would be Christianity-oriented".

Hey...

I haven't really been following this, but I just wanted to assert to everyone to remain calm.  Don't start generalizing about Christianity just from this ShawnSt3r quack - I'm not a Christian, but no Christian I know acts like this guy.

It's not really worth trying to dialog with this guy - if you want serious religious discussion, turn elsewhere.  And please, keep the psuedo-religious discussion off the boards - at least keep it in General Chat or something.

Any person who tells you that anything is perfect and true and unquestionable is, to put it mildy, not on the level.

Zelda and SSB will be tailored to the new control device - that's the entire point of having it.  The more traditional style "shell" gamepad attachment is mostly for cross-platform 3rd-party support and the SNES/N64/GCN compatibility.

My prediction is that basically every reputable developer is going to be all over the new controller, but Nintendo itself most of all - do you really think they would pass up the chance to reinvent their most popular games in wildly new, creative, accessable, and EARTH-SHATTERINGLY FUN ways?  This is the beginning - new genres will be popping up left and right.  The traditional style shell is only provided so that the old genres are still available on the Revolution, if you happen to be a fan.

I don't think the new remote controller is an "addition" at all - yes, it IS meant to replace the kind of controller we know and love, where applicable.

I see that people are saying that people will feel threatened by the "SURPRISE, whole new gaming paradigm!!" - I think Nintendo can avoid this if they just market it right.  It's not a hard concept for reasoning people to understand - I think they've really hit the nail on the head here.  The developers know it - even the 3rd party ones, even the ones who make generic sports games and first person shooters.  This is basically the holy grail, the gateway to the next stage in gaming - it's definitely NOT something you can call an "addition", like GC-GBA connectivity was.

I'm not saying it's going to be perfect, or that it will succeed - but the concept, the POTENTIAL greatness is the revolutionary part of it, at this point.  I say unleash it on the public and DEMONSTRATE to them why they need a Revolution - don't sheepishly pack it in as an "addition" to a standard controller.

... who was saying that?  If you're referring to me, if you think I'm arguing AGAINST the Rev, then you haven't been reading anything, so I might as well stop here.

1. I'm not arguing against the Rev - I find the Rev to be simply astounding in its greatness, or at least the greatness of its potential.  My point is that what the Rev brings to the table doesn't erase the need that some games have for the current (now somewhat quaint) style of d-pad/analog stick and buttons setup.

2. I didn't mean just 2D games, but any game that takes to heart precision and speed, such as 2D Fighters and action games, but also 3D Fighters (Soul Calibur, DoA, etc) and 3D action games (Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc)

If you don't like those types of games, I understand - but as far as I know, Rev doesn't attempt to exclude those types of games from its repertoire, and in fact, actively embraces them through its virtual console.  Plenty of games would be ruled out if the Rev Remote-Control style controller were the ONLY method of control - that's the point, and I don't really see how it's debatable, but I don't mind being proven wrong, as long as you actually respond to what I say and not just what you imagine I say.

I agree - but I contend that there are types of games that despite benefiting from the new type of control, would also be hurt by the absence of the old type of control (see above post for less succinct explanation).

Quick, precise fighters, for one - 2-d action games like megaman, castlevania, etc - many 3-d action games - any kind of game that requires either fast, precise action or is built on abstract concepts that concern themselves only with the standard type of controller will benefit from the ability to use a more standard button array.

Don't tell me you won't even miss holding a controller in your hands.  The Revo's new controller concept is fantastic, but hand-motions and gesturing don't lend themselves to EVERY game - a game like Resident Evil 4, Mario 64, Wind Waker, Pikmin, FPS's, Adventure games etc. would be AMAZING on the Revolution's new controller, since the control is meant to be natural, fluid, and accurate but not to a lightning-fast degree - but a game like Soul Calibur or Guilty Gear X/2 or Megaman X, even if they would benefit vastly from the motion sensing, still will also benefit from the trappings of the controllers of yesteryear.

I honestly don't think laziness will be a problem among developers.

I think EVERYONE who has any sense in them senses the gravitas of this innovation, and how much fun it could be if used properly - and I think most people would also agree that it doesn't lend itself to every type of game.  Some developers will choose not to take advantage of the new innovations - that doesn't take away from those who do put it to real use.  By including an "gamepad shell" to make the controller more suitable for certain types of games, we, the users, simply get more options - this is a very positive thing (as long as there are no side-effects, such as increased price, or userbase limited by who has what peripherals and all varieties of that confusion).

So I think it's very short-sighted to condemn the gamepad shell attachment - you'll be out of luck if you want to play a traditional fighting game, or any of those old pleasures of non-wand-waving genres.  And don't forget the games from past Nintendo consoles!

Personally, I recommend Skies of Arcadia above Tales.  Just a fantastic game - despite the fact that the battling is MUCH less fun than Tales, the whole game is exciting with a great, fun, and at times moving plot, fantastic characters, the world is really vibrant and HUGE and really ... I don't know, it's just great.  And the music is fantastic as well.

Tales has wonderful graphics, and the plot is fairly interesting, but the dialogue and the way it's portrayed really cheapen the experience.  Battling is of course awesome - it's the kind of game that's fun to play more than once because battling is not a chore, it's actually enjoyable.  Overall, it's not up to par with Skies... Skies is just unbeatable, really.  My favorite RPG - above Chrono Trigger and FF6.

Oh yeah, and I have a Tales of Symphonia question, seeing as the topic has come up:

How do you get costumes?  I didn't get any on my first play-through, so I want to get the costumes on my second (it's fairly nice having 2x EXP, so I don't need to worry too much about leveling - more time for sidequests).  Are they just Titles that are accompanied by appearance changes, or what?

The Tales of Symphonia system is extremely deep - I feel like I'm missing something all the time.  For example, I never cook - I barely have any recipes.  And the only combination attack I know how to use so far is Photon Tempest... or Ray Storm later on.

Exactly as YoungPlumber put it -

The key to the usability of the gyroscopic motion control is the self-stabilization/clever use of variable resistance to movement.  If it just tilts, THEN it's like the game with the marble and the labyrinth.  But the resistance to movement makes it entirely different.  It basically stays all but directly upright, and senses when you apply a torque.  It would basically FEEL like a really nice joystick with force feedback, except you hold it in your hands, it can be used as a labyrinth-marble-style controller when desired (all the game has to do is lower the resistance to movement), and you have your hands on all the buttons of the normal controller, etc.

I don't guarantee that this sort of setup is even possible (although someone else on the boards may know) - I just argue that it would be an EXTREMELY intuitive and EXTREMELY accessable form of control, if you really picture it and give that mental image a chance.

The centering question is a good one.  Lots of little details and feasibility and comfort issues come into play when designing a new type of control - it's all part of the testing and development process.  At some point, it stops becoming fun to speculate because you start getting into the work of actually designing the controller I'd say leave it to Nintendo to make the controller comfortable and come up with a good calibration scheme - that's not our job!

I think we can assume most of the smaller issues can be dealt with via good design and good planning - IF Nintendo is actually going for a gyroscopic controller.  Since we don't know, I don't see any reason to speculate beyond general application and applicability.

Although I will say this: Nintendo has experience with comfort and calibration in designing their Tilt'n'Tumble and Twisted systems, so I don't think it would be an issue they couldn't get around.

Ok, I said I wouldn't speculate, but I am.  The controller could use a gravity sensor (a tiny hanging pendulum) to know which way "down" is, and calibrate the gyroscope off of that absolute reference [assumably the Revolution is not meant to be played in outer space...]

So basically, what you're suggesting, nemo_83, is a suit with embedded gyroscopes?  Not a whole-body suit, obviously, but more like a sleeve.

I would be extremely skeptical of this kind of controller being reasonable.  It's an intriguing idea for the future, like flying cars and such, but the fact remains that the Revolution is supposed to be MORE accessable to people.  An object that people can pick up and drive like a steering wheel or a bike is intuitive - a sleeve you have to configure and fit on and then dance around wildly is a fun idea but ultimately much less accessable.

The gyroscopic-tilt system should be more accurate than the analog joystick type system that we use today.  Of course, both will be available - it would be stupid to eliminate the analog stick completely from the controller.  Remember, gyroscope is not the same as Tilt'n'Tumble style - it's far more accurate and "solid" feeling, since it has (variable) resistance to change.

That kind of control would be unbelievably unintuitive!  Not what I'm invisioning.

Gyroscopic control detects tilt.  In that sense, it's like a Tilt'n'Tumble.  It's just much more advanced, precise, and can be used in different configurations for more dimensions of control.

You still hit the button to swing your sword.  The gyroscopic control would more likely be used to control movement or camera.

I think you can invision how the control could act as a steering wheel or joystick with gyroscopes, so let me pose this: image you're playing Zelda.  To walk forward, instead of using an analog stick (which we're all used to but non-gamers and newly acquired gamers have a hard time picking up) you just tilt the controller slightly away from you.  Not anything drastic - you feel the controller push back at you as you move it forward.  If there's a wall, the feedback will be harder.  You want to turn, so you tilt the left or right side slightly downard - it's simple, intuitive, like riding a bike.

I guess I should probably be more clear about what a gyroscope is.  A gyroscope is a device that utilizes the laws of classical mechanics to stay stable.  It spins around, and the faster it spins, the more it resists to you tilting it.  If you do tilt it, it is sensable in the change in speed of the gyroscope.  Gyroscopes can be used in different configurations (it could be just one, or it could be one on the left and one on the right, it could be 4, I'm no expert, so I don't know which one would be optimal) to have the capability to register various types of motion and to be able to exert certain types of feedback.

So there you have it, Ian Sane.  It's more like riding a bike than swinging a sword - subtle movements control motion on-screen, and action on-screen controls the force the gyroscope exerts on the controller which is the force the controller exerts on your hands.  You must have seen small children try to tilt the controller to get the character to move, twisting it, turning it - that's the way we tend to think.  Analog sticks are great, if you're used to them - but gyroscopic control is more accessable to non-gamers while being a possibly more functional variety of control and definitely more capable of adding another dimension to the gamer's experience.
