Title: Pre-order?
Post by: Stewpot on April 29, 2006, 01:41:19 PM
Are any places taking pre-orders yet on the Wii?  I know that Gamestop took them for the Xbox 360 pretty early on even before the price was announced...

Not that I know of, but I heard rumors Gamestop would start after E3.
My buddy does work there, but he was also the last person on Earth to find out about Twilight Princess being delayed so take it with a grain of salt.

Edit: typo "spot" to "stop" is a bad typo in context.

My EB is only taking people on a call list right now.

I know a lot of stores are saying they're holding off on pre-orders until they know more about the item (price, shipping, etc) and quanity... apparently there were a *LOT* of angry people who had to wait on their pre-ordered 360.

I've already reserved mine at GameCrazy (as well as a PS3).

Good call, you don't have to ask someone if you can buy a wii.

I've never pre-ordered a system before, but I think I might this time, just so I can ask for a Wii.

I remember when the Gamecube was first announced, Amazon was one of the first to offer pre-orders (from what I remember) and the whole thing was a farce.  As soon as you tried to order one it would give you a message telling you that all allotments were gone.  They must have had like one.

I preorder everything, really only because if I order it in advance I won't have to worry about doing it later.

The only problem is having to cancel orders.  I just cancelled two orders because I recently moved to Virginia and I didn't want to have to deal with what my brother or his wife would do with my packages, and I don't feel like driving back into Maryland just for a game.

I plan to go to a midnight release (likely at a Wal*Mart) for mine.

I mean, I'll want to get it at midnight anyway.
And it's much more fun to wait in line with tons of people.
And I get a 10% discount at Wal*Mart and don't have to worry about stupid forced bundles.

Yeah, you have to purchase two games for your reserved system at GameCrazy but that's not bad at all.

I'll get mine at gamestop. They'll be taking preorders as soon as they get a price, release date, and are sure of how many they'll get.  They got burned by 360 and won't be taking that chance again (or so they say).  That and I get a 15% discount on all of the games and stuff I buy from them for working at barnes and noble.

I hope it'll be different this time around, but when the GameCube launched, I did not buy a game for it until Smash Bros. was released.  I rented the Star Wars game and Luigi's Mansion, but funds were low and if I spent the money, I wouldn't have been able to pick up Smash Bros. the day it came out...  So if I'd been forced into buying game I didn't want to buy with the system, I would have been sad.

It took me while to scrape up money for my Cube and then the only game a could get was the Batman one.  Great game that was marred to death by a bad battle system.  Everything else was spot on. (And some annoying level choices.)

the place i bought my gamecube at tried to rape me dammit. it was the day of launch and i had to wait till AFTER school and i was freaking out that it would of sold out. the closest place to me was this little hobby store called The Dragons Den which was right across from the Game Stop but i had alreayd known that without a preorder you wouldnt get one, so dragons den was my only choice. i get there and theres lots of people, not just for GC but other stuff, and the guy at the counter tells me they had one left, in black (THANK GOD!) but it was a "bundle' package. i knew there were no bundle packages but it was their way of getting my money. i had to buy the GC with a memory card and two games (their choice...). i didnt want to walk away empty handed so i paid that assh*le and left. games were wave race (didnt care for) and tony hawk (kept me busy). damn i dont even remember the first game i bought after that....
anywho, if there is a midnight release at a walmart, i'll def do that since i've never done one before. if not i'll have to have the few friends of mine that still work at gamestop to tip me off to when they start preorders. i work in the mall where its at so i'll sit outside the store until they open

JERRY: I don't understand, I made a reservation, do you have my reservation?
RENTAL CAR AGENT: Yes, we do, unfortunately we ran out of cars.
JERRY: But the reservation keeps the car here. That's why you have the reservation.
RENTAL CAR AGENT: I know why we have reservations.
JERRY: I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car. See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them.

I've never pre-ordered anything in my life

what is the appeal? avoiding lines mabye?

seriously?
Title: RE:Pre-order?
Post by: EasyCure on May 04, 2006, 01:30:18 PM
the appeal is the garantee of getting what you pre-ordered. sadly places like gamestop are taking reservations but not holding them, as wandering pointed out happened to jerry sienfeld.
the only things i usually preorder is zelda games, mainly because they always come with freebies. i remember when OoT came out i had a preorder at a GS and i showed up three days after its release and while people were waiting in line to ask if they had any, i just walked up to someone else and told them i had a preorder and i got my game. the sucky part was they gave away all the free sh*t that came with it. with OoT in my hands, i knew i could live without my zelda calander and tshirt though, still mad they didnt hold it with the reservation.

that was in '98 though and as we've seen with Xbox360, not all preorders work out. big stores let ANYONE preorder even when they dont know definitive release dates or even how many units they'll be getting. best buy still takes preorders for Z:TP saying it will be released in june. im sure there will be stricter policies in place now that they've learend from the xbox fiasco. it will return to X amount of games they will have so thats how many preorders they'll take. if you take more than X amount and that one unlucky guy shows up last, they'll give him the "oh we sold out but we'll honor your preorder until we get more ___ in" crap. i HATE THAT. GS better not screw me over with Wii or TP

"I've never pre-ordered anything in my life

For a new console typically it's ensuring you get one since they usually sell out at launch.  I have no idea why anyone pre-orders anything else though unless there's some special bonus.  I've never had a situation where a game I wanted was totally unavailable in my area because I didn't pre-order.  The weird thing is that people will pre-order major titles like Mario.  Um, I'm pretty sure there will be enough copies of THAT game to go around.

I pre-ordered my Cube from Toys 'R' Us.  I very specifically asked if I had to buy any bundled bullsh!t and they said no.  Launch day arrived and my friend unfortunately had a birthday party out of town that weekend (I'm still mad about that) so I missed the launch and had to have my father pick my Cube up for me.  He managed to be first in line and when he got to the counter they told him I had pre-ordered a bundle even though the clerk told me I wasn't when I pre-ordered.  My Dad then said "fine, cancel the pre-order" grabbed one of the few not pre-ordered consoles off the shelf and bought that instead.  HA!  Take that Scams 'R' Us!

I haven't decided if I'm buying a Wii at launch yet but if I do I'll not pre-order because of what happened last time.  I'd rather hunt all over town and get nothing then be forced to buying useless crap I don't need.

Yeah.  In the last 6 years, this gen it seems, pre-orders have gone down the tubes.  As EasyCure said.  They'll now let you place a pre-order for anything.  No limits.  It used to be the exception and you were 100% guarenteed to get it.  That being said they also use to give cool swag.  Now they do stupid "Trade in 4 games and get it free" junk.

As far as the Walmart wait till 12 deal.  On big releases you can do that.  I was the first person in my town to own a DS bar none.  It was a lot of fun.  Though each Walmart had a different set of games (I was hunting "Feel the Magic").  There were two Walmarts near us so the group got there DS at one and then we migrated over to the other to see more games.  Also I would suggest checking Sears for systems.  They take a while to get them out, at least at mine, but most people forget that Sears sells games and Consoles.

yeah i miss the days of a preorder being a %100 deal and the free swag that usually comes with something major. i preordered wind waker for the masterquest bonus disc, but even an exclusive tshirt could be incentive to putting money down.

also, when do walmarts close? or do they announce a midnight release if one is going to happen? i'd rather do that then preorder. if theres anyway to keep me informed, i'd apreciate it. PM or email even; go for it.

Indeed, the 360 launch (and the DS lite for that matter) proves pre-ordering offers little guarentee of availability. Unless they offer you something to do so, it's just silly.

How a Walmart Launch Goes Down:

1. If it's really popular show up at 11 because you are worried you won't get one.
2. Go to electronics and asked bewildered Electronics person about product. (They will be confused)
3.  Wait till midnight.
4.  When stocker comes make sure to be in line first to get said item.
5.  Do not wonder off for there is no announcements.

This only works for really big things, ironically enough KH2 wasn't big enough.

I got lucky on my DS.  I went to circuit city at noon (on launch day) and for some reason one had fallen off the pallet they used to stock.  So while the big display they had up was empty, one was still sitting behind the counter.

No one thought to ask.

I'll definitely be pre-ordering the Wii. I'll probably throw in a couple of Wii launch game pre-orders as well, just to be safe. I doubt the Wii launch will be like the 360s launch as Nintendo will (hopefully) be smart enough to have more supply and there will likely be less demand for the Wii then there was for the 360, if only because of the PS3 launching around the same time as the Wii. Still... No screwing around. I want my Wii, and I want it on day one. If only for that false sense of hardcore superiority.

The Wii will be the first home console system I've ever bought at launch (provided that E3 lives up to the hype and this  system is so awesome that it's able to kick Reggie's ass). I pre-ordered my DS and the GameStop I bought it at had a line that wrapped around the entire inside of the store and about 10 feet into the mall in front of the store's entrance.

I'm expecting a similar situation for the Wii, so I am planning on pre-ordering next week.

I pre-ordred mine at the neighborhood Game Crazy like last year.  I also have a Zelda TP pre-order at the Gamestop at the mall for damn near 2 years now.

Wow.  The DS launch where I lived was not that popular at all.  In fact at Sears we never had a shortage of DS's.  (Or PSP's, or Gamecubes, or Xboxes, but we did run out of PS2's once, we had the last one in town).  It was fairly easy to get one within a week of launch.  I got my at midnigh as I mentioned because I was paranoid that I wouldn't be able to get one.  First I have to find someone I trust to pre-order a Wii.  Maybe Gamecrazy but I'm not sure.

Until they confirm Metroid Prime 3's  launch date I wont get one, many games seem cool and all but its out of my budget, I can only afford few games and this is the one along with Zelda (which wont touch my rev).

so true. my brother convinced our father to get us a SNES on launch day because we were so hyped about the nes, and i remember picking up n64 on launch too, it was damn near sold out at the toys r us i picked it up at, an i have already shared my story of buying my GCN on launch day, and the "bundle" crap i had to buy because it was the last (black) one.

seriously though, i'll be putting Wii on preorder at my gamestop the second a price is announce and they know how many units they're getting. i dont want to mess around and NOT get one and atleast one game. i'm already picking up a ton of used GCN games at cheap prices that i wont necisarrily play now but just to have something to play on rev while i try to afford newer games. the system better be in black two or i might just have to buy two (wihte on luanch day if thats the case, then pick a black on up whenever it comes out and give the white one to my gf). im super cereal you guys

I don't do preordering. Even if it's as scarce as the XC at launch I could still bring one home on day one. If I wanted one at launch, that is.
