There's ways to use the wiimote accelerometer information better. But it's not a straightforward proposition. For example, Gamasutra recently had an article explaining how lots and lots of math known as Kalman Filtering could improve the Wiimote's motion detection capabilities. What does that mean? I don't know! But I hope that developers out there do, because this new exciting world of 3D spatial controls is far more complicated than analog sticks!

Just looking over IGN's review of the game (I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet), it seems like this technology is actually pretty nifty - there biggest complaint being that it's for a fighter, which makes sense, because even a little bit of inaccuracy in a fighter can be a huge pain in the ass.

I don't think you get how the wiimote works - the wii doesn't sense where you are in three dimensional space, it senses the movement of the wiimote.  So if you move the wiimote when paused, it doesn't matter, because the system won't register that as a zoom-in/zoom-out thing.  Instead it'll register movements with the accelerometers from wherever you're sitting/standing.

So as new games come out, I've become increasingly worried about the motion sensing aspect of the wiimote.  While the infared pointer and the tilt seem to work rather well, basically every game involving hacking/slashing/stabbing or some other three-dimensional movement of the wiimote that's more complicated than just detecting movement, seems to have had a mass response of having imprecise controls.  I personally found this to be very true with Zelda, though that by no means screwed up the experience for me (though I had a damn hard time getting a vertical or horizontal slash to happen as i wanted it).  My limited experience with other games makes this seem true as well.  And I've seen it in tons of previews for e3 games.

So here's the question:  is the software recognition of gestures still in a primitive stage, and can we hope for awesome, precise gesturing in the future, or is the wiimote's motion sensing really just not that good?  It's an important question, and to me, makes the difference between the wii being gimmicky without a lot of long term potential (because, honestly, flailing and hoping it comes up with the right motion isn't immersive), and something that will change gaming.

Seriously though, how in hell is Sonic not a big name third party game?

I'm really surprised no one's excited about sonic - it's supposed to be the best sonic in years, or so the people who've played it thusfar have said.

Yeah, ok, ok, but we knew these titles were coming, because of earlier lists, and we knew they were crap.

So now they're out of the way and NOA can bring on the good stuff.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: I met my first skeptic today

I think the funniest skeptic I've encountered told me he didn't want  a Wii because he was more or less too lazy to wave his arms around while playing a game.  He waned to sit back and press buttons.

I smiled and nodded, because he's my sister's fiancee, but I was laughing my ass off inside.

Ya it does, But it does prevent hacker from use Nintendo's emulators to run pirated ROMs.

It would also allow a developer in theory to if they want to go ahead and make some improvements on the original rom.  Like up the clock a little to speed up framerates.

Also - making a universal emulator that runs every game PERFECTLY - next to impossible.  This is an easy way to tweak individual emus so that they run the individual game without any glitches whatsoever.

Damn I used to spend too much time reading about emulation.

Apparently it got a 7/4.5/4.0 in the new EGM (not up on gamerankings yet - got the info from the game-specific board on gamefaqs.com).  Which would worry me, but I've mostly disagreed with EGM for years now.  I take gameinformer's lower score much more seriously.

It didn't sell because it was VERY old school.

IceCold, I believe that is correct.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Is the Wii remote really so unreliable in Zelda: TLP?
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:19:12 AM »
For those having a problem with the shield bash and the spin attack, I've found that, with a little practice, I can reliably do both.  Here's my techniques:

Shield Bash: Punch.  That's right punch.  Jab the controller forward, directly at the screen.
Spin Attack: Spin your arm around in a vertical circle, kinda like you were going to throw a lasso.  Its worked quite well for me.

Any news on what they will be?  Is the Big N not keeping up on releasing schedules?

I'd say that Irrational Games carries more of the spirit of Looking Glass than Ion Storm does... though I'm not sure if it has any of the actual employees.

Ristar = Unknown Gem.  REALLY good.

Look at the Gamefaqs reviews for it:

Seriously, pick the game up if you're bored.  I certainly will in a bit.

Nintendo Gaming / 1st Quarter 3rd Party Support...

So there's been extensive discussion about the kinda light 1st party support during the 1st quarter next year, but I'm interested in knowing what's coming from 3rd parties.   Anything interesting outside of Sonic?

TalkBack / RE: Reggie Talks Wii
« on: November 29, 2006, 04:11:47 PM »
Ian... this was the best launch this generation.  By a lot.  And I'd say the only launch last generation that can compare was the XBox's, unless you count Dreamcast.   And the generation before?   I'd say that Nintendo was the only one to launch with any games that made the system worth buying.

Stop complaining so much and take a second and look at the competition.  Look at how other companies act.  It's not arrogance, it's the pressures of getting a system out at a time when it will still be competitive.  Of course there won't be 5 amazing games at launch.  That does not happen.  And I think your dismissal of Ubi Soft is a little... stupid.   Unlike EA, they have a history of releasing games exclusively for individual systems, at least initially, and they've done so on the Wii.  Furthermore, big Japanese publishers ARE developing games for the Wii, which they were NOT doing for the GameCube, especially at this point in the game.  The few that did make games for the cube were more or less bought - see Capcom making Zelda games and Square making Mario Sports games.

And frankly, porting games to the VC isn't an instantaneous process - see the YEARS it took people to concoct emulators for PC.  While of course it's easier with the original code and additional system specs, it's not like Nintendo snaps their fingers and the games appear.  In addition, I found the prices quite reasonable, and was quite happy to spend 5 dollars to pick up the original Legend of Zelda, which I'd never gotten to play to that point in time.  If it seems too steep for you, by all means, don't buy it!

In conclusion, you're wrong.

Caliban - that's probably just hard-coding an old problem with NES games - that if there are more than a certain number (I think 4) sprites on a horizontal line, the game slows down and the sprites flash.  Any accurate NES emu would have that in there.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo's Wii titles for 2007
« on: November 26, 2006, 03:47:54 PM »
Super Paper Mario is a 2D Mario game.  Way to be informed, kids.

I'm hoping that 2007 brings out the major franchises and 2008 brings out the major original titles.  Nintendo needs new characters, finally, methinks.
