Help with changing SD cards on my 3DS?
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:22:44 AM »
I've run out of room on the pack-in SD card so I want to switch to my 8 GB one. Question is, how do I do it? I've already tried to just copy over the files but that didn't work. Help!

Really?  It worked for me.  I put my old SD card in my PC, copied everything off of it onto the hard drive, took out the old card and put it in my custom 3DS AR Card Game Case for safe keeping, put my new 32 GB SD card into my PC, copied everything back onto it, popped it into my 3DS and everything was there, ready to go...

Yeah, it didn't work. I plugged it in and everything that was saved to the SD card wasn't showing up on the menu. I won't be happy if I have to redownload my crap-ton of games on the new SD card.

Hm.  That's odd.  Sorry I can't help - it worked for me, perfectly, the first time... ?:\

No problem. I'll ask on GameFAQs or something.

Hmm, like UncleBob, I never had a problem. I did the exact same thing as him and it worked first time.

I just got a 32 GB SD card that I'm going to try this with so... wish me luck!

It works, the important thing is you need to have the directories (folder) locations as they exactly were on the old SD card.

Well, if I got to the root of the SD card and copy the whole damn thing over, that should work, correct? Does it matter that my 3DS is a launch 3DS and maybe the feature isn't in those models?

I'm pretty sure I just copied *everything* over, no problems.  I've done the same thing with my Wii, too.

You might want to do a direct binary copy (use 'dd' in Linux, for example) from the old card to the new card, and then just use a tool to grow the file system to fit the larger card.
