Nintendo Gaming / Re: Complete Zelda Game Playthrough
« on: June 20, 2016, 01:39:20 PM »
Finished The Legend of Zelda on Saturday and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I've started it countless times over the years but always got frustrated with the overworld and combat and gave up early. This time around I finally hit a groove and went from dungeon to dungeon pretty rapidly. Beat it in about 7 hours.

Since Nintendo was throwing a pretty great E3 sale, I picked up the Zelda games I didn't own yet: Majora's Mask 3D, Minish Cap, and the two Oracle games. I decided to play Majora's Mask 3D next, solidifying my stance of aborting the whole order thing altogether.

Bought both Wii and Wii U at or around launch and experienced significant game droughts soon after with both, so I'm planning to wait until I've exhausted Wii U's games before jumping to NX. Right now I just have too many I haven't played (between Wii U and 3DS) that I can't imagine wanting another console as early as next year.

There is that little bit of me, though, that knows they could blow me away or reveal another game that I must have. I'd also be enticed if you could bring your whole Wii U library over and continuing to buy digital Wii U/virtual console games right from the get go.

For now, Wii U.

Hey, man. Play the games you want to play and play them the way you want to play them.

Yep, I'm already backing off a bit from my original, arbitrary plan.

I started The Legend of Zelda yesterday and didn't make it 5 minutes without a guide. I went to zeldadungeon.net to use the handy maps they provide and that's made it more enjoyable. I don't really care about maintaining some sort of purity, but in the past I've just tried to tackle the first game with a walkthrough but it became a slog because I was just trying to follow steps. Going with a happy medium this time and it's going much better.

Also I think I'm going to change up the order because the more I think about playing the GBC and DS games back to back the more I want to shoot myself.

I may also back off on my plans on replaying the ones I've already beaten. I could live forever and never play Spirit Tracks again. I liked it and it had fantastic dungeons, but it was a bit overlong and the stylus controls aren't my favorite.

Nintendo Gaming / Complete Zelda Game Playthrough

I finally picked up a New 3DS yesterday and, with the big Zelda E3 blowout today and the promise of a new game on the horizon, I've decided to play all of the main Zelda games in the months prior to the new game's release.

I want to beat them in order of release. I've always wanted to do it since I've only beaten a handful of them (OoT, WW, TP, ST).

Right now I plan on replaying the ones I've already beaten and playing the remasters where available.

My plan is to go it slow and immerse myself in each game and I haven't decided whether or not I'll use guides. I'm particularly intimidated by the first two games.

Here's my list, in order of attack:
(1) The Legend of Zelda
(2) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
(3) A Link to the Past
(4) Link's Awakening
(5) Ocarina of Time
(6) Majora's Mask
(7) Oracle of Seasons
(8) Oracle of Ages
(9) The Wind Waker
(10) The Minish Cap
(11) Twilight Princess
(12) Phantom Hourglass
(13) Spirit Tracks
(14) Skyward Sword
(15) A Link Between Worlds

optional side quests - Four Swords, Triforce Heroes

Am I crazy? Should I use guides? Urgh.

TalkBack / Re: NES Remix Announced, Available Now

"Nintendo, do something different! Wha - you want us to pay for it? Screw you guys!"

Trying something different is good, but I don't know why you are confusing being different with providing value. This is a cute idea. It looks neat. But if I'm spending $15 on a digital game, NES Remix is certainly not at the top of my list.

That said, how different is this really? Nintendo trying to cash in on nostalgia for old NES games (most of which aren't that much fun to replay now, and have already been pushed on Virtual Console multiple times) with expanded versions of WarioWare-style mini games?  Doesn't sound quite as different or unique as you are selling.

I'm really not down on the game, but after sitting through a big portion of the YouTube video my thoughts are confirmed: the gameplay being offered is not worth $15 to me.  In fact, after seeing more I'm not questioning whether it's even worth $10 to me - especially when there are so many great games with all new content available for less from sources like the eShop or Steam.

If you are excited about the game and think it's worth the money, more power to you though!

After playing it, I can confirm that it is unlike anything I've played from Nintendo before. Like mushing some NES franchises into an indie "challenge style" game. So it's...different!

Value is certainly subjective, but considering I've dropped $15 on eShop games and indie games like this before the price didn't terribly surprise me and I'm willing to pay it. I guess I was just surprised that the majority of comments on here were negative. The amount of content is on par with other $15 games. I was excited!

But I am enjoying this game. I love the bite-sized challenges and how they've made some of the mundane games fun and interesting. It's fun and I'd recommend it.

I always find it jarring when I read complaints about this game. If you hate padding or things that take time, then you must LOATHE Skyward Sword.

I could only possibly find sailing a pain if you are in a rush to just finish the game. I found it pure joy for escapist adventure and exploration.

Same with that last fetch quest - I didn't notice how much time or effort it took because I was enjoying exploring the game so much.

I bought the game from GameStop today for 90 smackers, so I guess I'm part of the problem?

While I agree it makes GameStop look pretty terrible, I was willing to pay what is now basically the lowest price for the game on the market. Part of the reason I'm okay with it is because I bought it day one, loved it a lot, but had to sell it due to being between jobs. Now I want to finish the bugger. And $90 for a 100+ hour game that I love is not a particularly bad investment, in my eyes.

The massive GameStop gift card I had lying around after trading in my 360 didn't hurt either...

TalkBack / Re: Why We're Hyped: Pikmin 3
« on: August 01, 2013, 09:49:58 AM »
So torn about this game. I liked Pikmin 1 and 2...a lot. But there always seemed to be something missing or slightly off about them to me. By all accounts it looks like Pikmin 3 will be far more polished, so maybe this is the one that will elevate the series to beloved status in my heart. Also, I am looking awfully hard at Mario & Luigi: Dream Team... Who would have thought the $30 eShop credit I got after buying SMTIV would cause so much inner turmoil?

I have only ever dipped the edge of my toe into Pokemon (put 6 hours into Pokemon Black), but this game looks completely epic. I think it may convert me into a fan.

Yes! I would like a physical release! A plastic card with a code for digital download sounds fantastic!

Yes, I actually listened to this behemoth of a podcast twice. Twice.

I just had another great thought - an online Spotpass feature where you can play a game of golf and send it to your friends to compete with when they get a chance. Kind of like a turn-by-email thing, only you can complete the whole game and then your friend can compete with your "ghost" in real time. That would be awesome.

14
The delay may have just been to space out releases, so they might not be doing much more work on the game. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Yeah, that is my fear as well.

At any rate, the only other Mario Golf game I've played is the GBC version on my 3DS, and I quite enjoy the single player with RPG elements. So I would love to see a single player campaign where you can take your Mii and earn experience points and level up. A StreetPass feature similar to gold rush in New Super Mario Bros. 2 would also be nice.

Currently playing Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed and just started Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. A complete n00b at both.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The Wii U and next Gen: What can Nintendo do?
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:52:32 AM »
Just throwing this out there: I had a few laptop hard drives laying around so I picked up a dual docking station for like $50 and use it for Wii U storage. Has worked out well for me, and so far I've downloaded all of my games except for Nintendo Land. I was pretty upset about the lack of internal storage due to my tendency to download games, but I was pleased with how easy it was to set up this unusual option.

Here's what I got: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dual+Bay+Docking+Station+for+Most+Internal+SATA+Hard+Drives/9419596.p?id=1218102199901&skuId=9419596&st=hard%20drive%20docking%20station&cp=1&lp=2

With any storage option make sure that you don't stretch the USB cable too far - the slightest tug will freeze your system consistently.

I also enjoyed watching matches and betting on them with those virtual coins - anyone else do that? I had a blast just eating some food while gambling in an online Nintendo game.

I actually had a pretty good time playing this game online. My main beef was the difficulty of using friend codes and trying to figure out how to voice chat in those pre-iPhone prehistoric days. I remember having my massive laptop set up on the floor next to me and using a really crappy headset to Skype my buddy.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The Wii U and next Gen: What can Nintendo do?
« on: May 20, 2013, 12:26:32 PM »
"Next gen" is a term that used to be factual and has turned into a term bros use to justify new hardware. I am no longer a bro, and a machine's power does not define its "next gen"-ness to me. I think Nintendo thinks similarly, which is why they've abandoned the great hardware arms race in favor of unique experiences and tight gameplay.

Factually, the Wii U is their next gen console. Whether or not bros agree with that is irrelevant. It will have the games I want to play. That is all that matters. And hey, the games look better than any other console I own (including Xbox 360, by a long shot). I really am not sure what the problem is, other than we are still waiting for the killer apps.

I really love the direction they have gone with DLC. Significant content for those who want more, without gimping the main experience, and reasonably priced. And now physical standalone copies? Love the move, even if I'm a download fiend.

I'm with Fatty. GB games have been a pleasant surprise on the 3DS. Probably because I grew up during that era but never had a GameBoy. It's cool to go back and play games I missed out on. Hopefully there are some Game Gear gems in there.
