TalkBack / Re: Physical Games vs. Digital Games: The Face-Off
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:45:19 AM »
I see the benefits of both sides of the argument. I tend to go digital if it's a game I'm sure I'll want permanently or cannot find a physical copy. I tend to go physical if it's a cartridge. As a Dreamcast owner, I've learned to fear disc rot.

The Wii U is a strange beast and that has been the biggest challenge. It's hard to explain to anyone regardless of their interest in video games. Nintendo has also dropped the ball on one of the console's most compelling features: backwards compatibility. The Wii U is the only console that can play last gen games and use last gen controllers. For those of us who like arcade sticks for fighting games, that is a big deal.

The other big problem is the Wii itself. By the end, many gamers didn't feel like that console catered to them anymore. I honestly abandoned the Wii platform after Wario Land Shake. There was a period of 6 months with not a single game that interested me. It seemed like a good time to sell off the system and get a PS3. Part of what made the Wii U a good purchase for me was the backwards compatibility. I bought the system for $200 and hit up a Gamestop used game sale and got 6 Wii games for less than $50. I had a lot to catch up on since I sold my Wii.

All that said, it comes down to content. For my money, the only must-have console on the market is the 3DS. The PS4 and Xbox One don't have a single game between them that I'm interested in. The Wii U gets a lot of play due to certain VC games (Earthbound, Mega Man X) and a few downloadable titles as well as Mario 3D World. I cannot even consider the Vita when the 3DS is in the picture. If Nintendo could learn to use the VC better as a crutch during the slow months, the Wii U would be much more attractive to retro gamers. Hell, putting more rare games out on the VC, like Earthbound, would help as well.

I was very interested in this game until I found it at a Gmaestop and read the manual. Using the touchscreen to control a shmup is a horrible idea. I had the same reaction to Animal Boxing. Developers need to think about touch screen usage before implementing it.

I really hope this is released domestically, though I do worry about licensing issues preventing that. Karas, Gatchaman and Casshern/Casshan are all licensed by different companies. But here's hoping for either a domestic release or a PS3 release so that fighter nerds like me can play this game.

I mostly play Soul Calibur IV, Burnout Paradise, Battle Fantasia and Super Puzzle Fighter. I plan on getting into 1942 soon. I'm looking forward to SF HD Remix and SF IV.

I like Izuna because death is punished but not as much as in other games in the genre. You keep your stats and progress, both of which are usually stripped away. Izuna is generally powerful enough to fight without weapons and that's a great asset to have.

TalkBack / Re: Capcom's Bionic Commando Not Approved for Virtual Console

Sony and MS have played hardball with developers for years. Now Nintendo finally has the same option.
Why would it want to essentially advertise for a PS3/360 title? I don't think this has anything to do with the game's content. I mean there are upcoming Wii titles that are FAR more violent and controversial afteralll. If Capcom was willing to give the Wii a port or even a different version of the new Bionic Commando we'd almost certainly see the original on the VC and maybe we still willl. All Nintendo is asking of developers is to support it's console which I don't think is too much to ask considering it's by far the most popular and most successful.

Nintendo also has a long history of playing hardball with publishers; that was one of Square's reasons for jumping ship to the Playstation.

Bionic Commando was released on the GBA as part of the Capcom Mini Mix. I don't see why it cannot be released on the VC.
