Does anyone else think the lack of 4-player local is going to hurt? It's something people have come to expect from Nintendo head-to-head multiplayer, not to mention what a great party game Splatoon could be. Of course, I have absolutely no idea how that would affect frame-rate

TalkBack / Should You Buy Xenoblade Chronicles 3D?
« on: April 10, 2015, 07:40:00 AM »

Use our fancy questionnaire and figure out if it is indeed Reyn time for you and yours.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/40062/should-you-buy-xenoblade-chronicles-3d

Today, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D launches on New 3DS in North America. This is the widest release of anything Xenoblade in America yet, as the Wii release and the Shulk Amiibo were both exclusive to GameStop. You might not be fully aware of what Xenoblade is and why you (yes, you) might want to buy it.

So, in addition to our glowing review, we came up with a few questions that, when asked, should be able to point you in the right direction.

Do you like RPGs?

If you answer yes: What the hell are you waiting for? If you missed out on Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, you missed out on one of the best Japanese RPGs in the past decade. It's expansive, with a compelling story, unique combat, and an interesting world.

If you answer no: This likely isn't for you because, well, it is an RPG. However, the action is in real time in a way similar to an MMO. If you're not a fan of turn-based battles, then Xenoblade might be the RPG for you.

Do you own a New 3DS?

If you answer yes: Awesome! Now you can actually play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D because it is the first New 3DS exclusive title.

If you answer no: Even if you wanted to play this game, you can't. Sorry, I know it's a bummer, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3D only works on the New 3DS XL (and the New 3DS if you live outside of America)

Do graphics trump gameplay for you?

If you answer yes: Go play some Final Fantasy XIII or something. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D looks vaguely like butt on the New 3DS. It runs smoothly, but the textures look muddy and the best parts of the Wii version's graphics, namely the draw distance and scale, are washed away on the smaller screen.

If you answer no: Then run to your store - retail or digital - and buy this damn game.

Did you play Xenoblade on Wii?

If you answer yes: There likely isn't much for you here. Xenoblade is a masterful game, but it's also a heck of a commitment. There is nothing new in the main game here.

If you answer no: Then you should probably get this game (as long as you also like RPGs). It'll take you 50+ hours to beat at a bare minimum, but coming from the perspective of someone who rarely puts that amount of time into a game, Xenoblade is totally worth your time. And if you want a game to last you several days, well, there is more than 100 hours of content in this game. It’s huge.

Do you like Terminator?

If you answer yes: In a way, the story is kind of like that. You control a bunch of humans (called Homs) who fight machines (called the Mechon) and there's a war. There was even an event that was sort of like Judgment Day, kind of.

If you answer no: Don't worry. The man vs. machine thing isn't obnoxiously overbearing. The whole story also gets freaking ridiculous. It's to the point where I don't even think one specific spoiler would ruin it. There are that many twists and turns.

Are you really feeling it?

If you answer yes: Then it must be Reyn Time. Go buy this game.

If you answer no: Get over yourself, Monado boy. Everyone should feel it.

What a bunch of jokers! I, for one, would welcome repeated instances of cheesy one-liners. It's Reyn time!

Most likely, the commercial was shot with the gamepad turned off (or showing something they didn't want in the final version). Whomever edited the image onto the screen in post-production just made it disproportionately large.

Character customization is the biggest loss for me. It's superficial, but facing vastly different opponents added a lot of depth to multiplayer (especially online) and made a fun little side-game.

I am disappointed in the lack of a Mega Flygon, but I'm also glad there weren't more mega OU/ubers. A major benefit of mega evolution that is the elevation of less-used pokemon, so they can last more than one turn against vastly-overpowered legendaries. Flygon would benefit because ALL of its stats are lower than non-mega Garchomp (its fellow ground/dragon).

Smash Tour was boring and the lack of Smash Run was disappointing, but, seeing as both modes are really just little side-bonuses added onto the main game, I don't think they will really offset the overall score. Otherwise, I was perfectly satisfied (especially considering that they went to the effort to produce a GCN controller adaptor).

Hopefully, they let Retro tackle metroid again. I love a lot of the new 2-D platformers, but Nintendo is in danger becoming a one-trick pony. It seems like a waste to have had Retro on Tropical Freeze (I'm not saying it's a bad game, just that other second-party developers could have done just as well), when they could be doing more innovative work like Prime.

Xenobrothers Alpha.

Lending first-party controllers (N64 and GCN) to 'friends.' It always ends with loose analog sticks or no controller at all.

I'm glad to see Rogue Leader, my first GameCube game getting some recognition. You think the first Death Star was challenging? Wait until the (inevitable) Battle of Endor (seriously, that **** is near-impossible). Then try re-playing for even silver rankings on everything. This game is easily one of LucasArts' best.

Don't waste your time with Rogue Leader II though—they tried to use the same game engine to create a game where you often find yourself either piloting sluggish ground-based repulsorlift vehicles (painfully boring) or on-foot (the controls and progression of this mechanic are horrendous). The game was so disappointing that I leant my copy to a friend in college and never asked him to return it.

Tron, Flynn and Sark.

I have to disagree on Loki though—I prefer my Marvel, LucasFilm and Disney separate. If the line gets blurred, we may end up with Spider-Mickey and Darth Goofy, and I don't know if I want to live in that kind of world.

I'm not seeing the name 'Fawful' anywhere in this review. Should I be concerned?

Nice choice, Neal—Wario Land was the first video game I ever owned. The numerous endings and creative gameplay give it ridiculous replay value.

I saw the first film in theatres with a female friend. She cried when Ash died.

I remember there was a kid in front of me who kept saying the pokémon's names as they appeared on screen—"hey, kid! shut up, they say their own names!"
