He isn't talentless, he's a cunning bastard. In an interview he said he made Garfield as unfunny as possible in order to be highly appealing, jokes can offend people but Garfield doesn't have any real jokes. Also the repetition of the same "jokes" over and over gives the series familiarity. IOW, it's the McDonald's business model applied to comics.

If I recall correctly, one of the writers on the Garfield cartoon was Mark Evainer. Who, along with Sergio Can't Spell his last name, created Groo the Wanderer.

Or those which convey despair (and hilarity) through the tiniest of Jon's gestures, like the one partybear posted (also one of my favorites). I love the fact that Jon must be talking to himself all the time, and how two of the three panels often end up being empty.
