Title: Why does Garfield suck?
Post by: wandering on September 07, 2008, 03:22:30 AM: Garfield is so unfunny, it makes Dasmos look hilarious by comparison. But why?

You might say it's because (much like Dasmos) Garfield's characters have no redeeming qualities. But if that were it, Seinfeld wouldn't be good.

You could say it's because Garfield's witticisms are terrible. But why are they terrible?

Why is Jim Davis a talentless hack?

Seriously though, you're a stuck up elitist. Anybody who doesn't like Garfield (the comic or the president) is un-American.

In an interview he said he made Garfield as unfunny as possible in order to be highly appealing, jokes can offend people but Garfield doesn't have any real jokes. Also the repetition of the same "jokes" over and over gives the series familiarity. IOW, it's the McDonald's business model applied to comics.

Or those which convey despair (and hilarity) through the tiniest of Jon's gestures, like the one partybear posted (also one of my favorites). I love the fact that Jon must be talking to himself all the time, and how two of the three panels often end up being empty.
