The game has been out for a few days, and it's already sporting prepurchase options for future DLC? This game already didn't appeal to me, but now I am ethically obliged to skip it.

Are those screenshots indicative of how the game actually looks?
Have they filtered all the sprites and the GUI, as to get rid of the pixels?

If so I am very disappointed.

TalkBack / Re: Taiko Drum Master Wii U Edition Coming to Japan This November
« on: September 12, 2013, 04:33:18 AM »

I LOVE Taiko Drum Master.

And the Japanese have bought a million copies of the 3DS and Wii versions combined, so they seem to dig it too. Made by Namco and largely based on the original Taiko Drum Master arcade game, Donkey Konga made it to the west, but those two versions of Namco's original IP didn't. Here's hoping the Wii U version comes our way, complete with tiny plastic drum and sticks.

@Leo
Yeah, picture delay from analog to digital got too big. :-/
Happens with Wiimote aiming as well, though not as game destroying an issue. I really should get a Wii U to avoid it.

I will have to respectfully disagree as I consider this to be Kirby's very best main series game.

I'd love to see another Capcom NES remake; namely Little Nemo: The Dream Master

but I'm getting ahead of myself. Great review, though I think they really IS something for newcomers here. It's a great games with great music that they haven't played before.

Though the Game Boy one also includes the Game Boy Color (a separate system).

As far as I know, (and Wikipedia seems to back me up) the original Game Boy (including Light and Pocket) sold over 100 million before Game Boy Color hit the shelves.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Free-to-Play Game Is Steel Diver
« on: June 19, 2013, 03:11:17 AM »
As someone who's been working on various F2P games myself, I can't say I have anything against the idea.

There are legitimately cool games made for people to freely play, and spend a few dollars inside if they feel like it.

Steel Diver is certainly the type of game that I'm interested in playing, but which I find it difficult to justify paying retail price for, so a F2P model could work wonders for the game. It means I'll play it where I otherwise wouldn't, and if it's a multiplayer experience, it's especially clever of Nintendo to make it free.

It's not a remake though, it's a beefed up port, and I don't think it's redundant.

It's Nintendo toughest and best looking 2D-platformer in years upon years, and having it available to the 3DS audience means it's available to many many people who don't and never did own a Wii.

That the extra content isn't available until you beat it is EXACTLY like the "extra" content of the original version not being available until you beat it. Having it available at the start I feel would compromise the structural integrity of the game. There's just more good stuff to unlock now.

In any case, if people "double dip" without intentions of completing the game again, I'd say they have too much disposable income.

TalkBack / Re: Why the E3 Snub Is What We Should All Want
« on: April 27, 2013, 07:30:36 AM »
Some of these comments seem to think that Nintendo will not be at E3, and won't be showing the Wii U to press at this event.

They Will.

They just won't be hosting the hour-long, on-stage, lights-smoke-n-mirror show this time around.

TalkBack / Re: Madden 25 Not Coming to Wii U?
« on: February 02, 2013, 12:35:33 PM »
What's the point of Riccitiello walking on stage with everybody from Nintendo and making a big deal out of supporting the Wii U, if they aren't going to?

If this all is indeed a backlash from not allowing EA to handle online services for the machine, then it's sad to see things unfold like this gamewise because of something rather unrelated. I'm thinking maybe in a bout of greed, EA were looking to make the Wii U the unofficial "EA Box" in response to the "SteamBox" rumors of the time.

In any case, for me personally this is not a big loss, but it does NOT bode well for the system's success in the US to not feature Madden.

It really, REALLY isn't a joke.

There're more than 150 million DSs out there, and license titles are still selling pretty gosh darn well for them.

This all does sound like a lot more fun than I ever would have anticipated.

My flatmate and I, despite being 24 and 26 would still lie with our DSs at night and exchange drawings across the apartment for great hilarity.

The personal touch the drawings add, and the limited allowance for typed text does sound like it will force a softer and more personal angle on this gaming forum. And it doesn't hurt that people without a Wii U themselves can't crash the party with fire and brimstone at will.

TalkBack / Re: Is Nintendo Land Too Complex?
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:36:04 AM »
Not "too complex".

Just too convoluted. It's crazy toy-land versions of franchises they don't know, strung together by a mish-mash of color.

I don't see my dad playing this the same way I played golf and bowling with him. And you know what? He doesn't HAVE to play it. There's other stuff to do, also in games.

This game serves to get those interested familiar with the classic Nintendo franchises, so they can sell some new iterations further down the Wii U's lifeline, which I'm all for.

Holy ****.

Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, and DIY Showcase on the front page.

We have some things in common.

This channel isn't available in Europe yet, though, which disappointed me ever so slightly.

I am surprised that no-one is making mention of the fact that you have to perform a Wii System Update to retrieve this channel.

In fact NO ONE AT ALL is mentioning the system update. Even the Wikipedia article on Wii updates does not detail this. I'll have to go ask the homebrew community what's up, it seems.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U is the Only Nintendo Platform for Black Ops 2
« on: November 02, 2012, 05:22:16 AM »
@geo
Sales did decline quite noticeably over the years with COD on Wii.

To the point where Activion and Treyarch probably agreed that it wasn't worth it anymore (well below a million sales with MW3,) and I'm sure Nintendo aren't giving them any incentive to think otherwise, as they want hardcores to jump to Wii U as soon as possible.

The Pro Controller is expensive because Nintendo is pushing profit margins .... I expect Nintendo to still hear how "crappy and cheap" their system is considering it can't do something right out of the box that 360 did ages ago. I'm not saying I agree with that sentiment, but that opinion holds some water.

Cost IS a factor. Deciding early on they don't want a headphone jack on the pro controller means, aside from parts, a lot of considerations around layout, wireless transmission, battery life and assembly never have to be made. As you said yourself, Nintendo wants a profit on this thing, so they can sell the base system cheaper.
And please don't pretend the bits inside the Wiimote just come for free now.

It's true that they're probably gonna hear about how cheap their system is anyway. If the 360 is the comparison though, the Wii did a lot of things out the box that the 360 didn't, like WIFI and motion control, and an actual web browser. Likewise, the Wii U is not pretending to be the 360, and people can't both complain about how much the pro controller, a seperately sold peripheral, looks like the 360 controller, and then also complain about what it does differently.

In general I think people quite often confuse the two seperate issues of sound financial decisions and costomer appeal. Just because something doesn't ring quite true with the consumer doesn't mean there wasn't a good reason to do it.

Alright, no offense guys, but every site on the web has run with this story without doing a minimum of thinking for themselves. Same goes for many many commenters.

The speakers and mic on the GamePad are, beside being a little on the crappy side, built into a device that has lots of buttons and sticks with tactile and slightly audible feedback.

Using them for voice chat in a Call of Duty match would be "Hey guCLACK CLICKITY you TAPPATAPPA for CLACK CLONKem?".

If Nintendo had decided to allow this, they would NOT hear the end about how crappy and cheap their system was.

This is, I suspect, part of why the young guy in the pre E3 video was shown talking to the elderly gent without touching the device.

Not including a headphone jack in the pro controller has to do with price and battery life. They KNOW someone using the pro controller also has a GamePad. Just keep it nearby and plug the headset into that. Not ideal, I guess, but saves on parts and manufacturing complexity, and as I hear it, people are already complaining the pro controller is expensive.

From this list, it's primarily Rayman Legends and Scribblenauts that has my interest.

But who am I kidding, I'll be too poor this Christmas to afford a Wii U, and if I have to be honest, I think they're charging to much for it anyway.

No flash?

That's bullocks. Although flash really has been a pain to deal with lately.

Even still, the only reasoning I can see to NOT support any form of Flash is to try and do what Apple is doing, which is keep users from just playing Flash games online instead of buying more games through the system.

Expect some severe limitations to Java support as well.

I never really got to play Superstar, Kirby's Dreamland 3, or Crystal Shards, though I did spend a little time with the latter, and had great fun with how crazy the transformations had become.

Picking this up if it's reasonably priced. The Game Boy games I own, but it's very rare I fire up my Game Cube's Game Boy Player and actually use them. :)

This has me hooked to a much larger degree than the Deathspank games Ron did last.

I'm very much looking forward to this kind of game on Wii U, something a little more out of the ordinary.

The most important thing revealed in this trailer (for me at least) is that levels now scroll vertically as well as horizontally.
In NSMB they only did one or the other, obvisouly in an attempt to simplify the game and bring in new players and bring back those for whom it got too difficult. This new development will allow for considerably more complex and interesting level design, like we got back in the Mario Bros 3 and Mario World days.

I bought this the day before this review went up, because I'm working on something with a sligtly similar premise.

I was quite disappointed that it was basically a boring version of Plants Vs. Zombies.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo 3DS XL Coming to All Regions This Year
« on: June 22, 2012, 06:01:56 AM »
Redesigned to match the design aesthetics of the Wii U.

Called it!

They did the exact same thing with announcing the DS lite right after Wii had stolen the show at E3.

Not including a second slidepad is deliberate in distinguishing the handheld experience from the console experience, is my best guess. Had it been there, the 3DS XL would literally just be a small Wii U in terms of functionality.

Gotta make sure they do something different, or people won't see how they need both.
