TalkBack / Re: What Bubble?
« on: December 17, 2008, 09:36:26 AM »
As someone who has fallen off the Wii wagon, I can say this:  No the Wii is not a fad, the "bubble" won't burst any more than the PS2's "bubble" did.  There's a huge install base and only a very small minority of disillusioned gamers are selling their Wiis on eBay and abandoning ship for more HD, online and hardcore* pastures.  I know a guy who is doing this.  I'm not.

I am holding out hope for Wii Motion+ and the next killer Nintendo game, as I still have faith Nintendo can produce innovative quality titles.  But I must admit, I only turned my Wii on recently to play Mega Man 9, and I could have done that on the PS3 -- it just didn't feel right on anything but a Nintendo.  I feel the games available on the Wii aren't as engaging as I had hoped, the motion controls aren't as accurate as I'd imagined and the online is, frankly, worthless.  Their success makes it worse because they aren't doing anything to address the online complaints, and the quality games are slow in coming. Again, maybe Wii Motion+ will make things more interesting but I would be lying if I said Fallout 3 wasn't the greatest game I've played since Grand Theft Auto IV, and I just didn't enjoy anything on the Wii as much as either of those games.  Not to say that Super Mario Galaxy wasn't great, it was as was Twilight Princess and Metroid.  Just in my opinion, there are titles on the HD systems that are more fun.

You will disagree, and you are not wrong to do so.  I stress that I and people like me are the minority, and while the more disgruntled Wii owners will probably be the loudest, they won't be louder than the sound of hundreds of thousands of new Wii consoles flying off shelves all the time.  The fact is Sony is in trouble, Microsoft is just turning a profit, and Nintendo has been raking in cash since the dawn of time.  They will continue to do so into the foreseeable future.

So relax, enjoy your games and stop worrying about stuff like this.  Nintendo is doing fine.

*Just generalizing games that aren't "casual", and not that there's anything wrong with casual games.

I would really like a lot of the PS2 franchises I never got to play to come over to the Wii.  Katamari, Time Crisis, etc.

Considering the fate of the other competitors to Nintendo's portables, I'd say the PSP is doing really well.  Two even have a competitor on the market is astounding.  Giving the PSP good graphics didn't hurt it.  What hurt it was that it was more expensive and ran off goofy discs with long load times.  Also the controls weren't very good, and since portables have built-in controls, that's pretty critical.

If Nintendo came out with a DS2 with more power than the PSP, it would not hurt them.  Not any more than coming out with a non-beefed up DS that just has a couple cameras stuck on it and an SD card.  Then again, I didn't really get any of the old Gameboy upgrades that didn't include a backlight.  This is just par for the course, Nintendo moves slowly until they are ready to revolutionize something.

Still kind of confused about this upgrade.  There's presumably going to be software that uses the camera, and software you can only play by downloading, so like it or not they split the user base.

Since that's the case, why not just come out with a more powerful DS2 with these features?  My only complaint with the current DS is the hardware is showing its age.  Boost the resolution, up the ram and processor speed, basically do a Gamecube->Wii style hardware upgrade.  Keep backwards compatibility and you're done.

I guess they're just following the old Gameboy line of products, meaning the DS won't get a major overhaul for another 5 years :S

Incidentally, garbage was part of the Game Boy version of Tetris, so it goes back at least that far.

Garbage is fine as long as you can turn it off :)

This may be where I give up on Nintendo.

Blame The Tetris Company for the crappy gameplay changes.  At some point their target market became cell phone gamers, and they have a ridiculous stick up their butt about changing the rules from platform to platform, so we have crap like infinite spin.  Infinite spin lets people cope with crappy cell phone button controls, and I'm guessing it's what led to the speed increase.  They had to get some amount of challenge back after adding such a game breaking feature.

Edit:  Here it is.  He blames "competitive play" in short bursts for the infinite spin and speed increase, but it's still about cell phones.

Good to know, thanks.  Sorry Nintendo!  It makes sense, this game plays almost exactly like the DS version.  Lack of a "garbage off" option makes no sense in any context though.  I could have sworn I read that there was a 2 player marathon game, and that was the whole reason I jumped on it.

I'm just pissed off because it is so rare I hear my wife say "Can we both play that game?" Then she gets mad at not being able to play because I'm inadvertently piling garbage on her screen.  We went back and played The New Tetris, and I'm sorry.  Everything about it is better than the Wii version short of screen resolution and wireless controllers.  Even screen resolution is almosts a moot point because they make your board so small on the Wii version.

What drains me of all hope is that the article you linked is from April 6, 2006.  Meaning the changes for customization he's talking about didn't go in.  Suffice to say it's the last version of Tetris I'm buying before trying.  Wii Ware needs demos :C

Can someone tell me exactly when and why garbage became mandatory on multiplayer?  It isn't fun, I can't imagine why anyone would want it, and who exactly would it kill to make it OPTIONAL?  Is the N64 version of tetris REALLY going to be the last good multiplayer marathon tetris game ever?  I don't want new stupid interpretations of Tetris, I don't even care what "field climber" and "hot lines" is.  I want to play multiplayer tetris with the normal freaking marathon rules.

And why does the speed jump to "insta-drop" after like 5 minutes of play?  It's absurd, you can't even place the piece before it hits bottom.  The DS version had this problem but for some reason let you spin the piece infinitely to try to make up for it.  Rather than fix the speed, they arbitrarily determine that you've tried to spin too much and just set the piece for you.  Great, thanks, now no amount of skill will let me play the game beyond that.  Awesome.

I remember playing over an hour solid on The New Tetris on N64.  What the hell did they do to the gameplay?  This may be where I give up on Nintendo.  They have completely lost touch with me.  The only good addition to Tetris in the last decade was the "hold" piece, yet they can't get the rock bottom stupid simple gameplay down.  HINT: take The New Tetris from N64, add 480p graphics and online play and you're freaking golden.

Instead they add a bunch of idiotic nonsense modes.  Yes.  Stage Racer.  WTF.

Great, thanks for the single player marathon mode.  Exactly what I needed: another game for my wife to watch me play by myself.  Yeah, for some strange reason she doesn't like playing tetris where loads of garbage lines are thrown on her screen, imagine that.

Please tell me I'm just missing the option somewhere, I'm fully prepared to apologize fully and admit that after 30 it's just too hard to find these gosh derned option menus that actually give you any gameplay options.  Oh also I will give you a dollar if you can tell me how to turn off garbage in multiplayer mode.

Wait, 3rd parties can use Miis now?  When did that start?

It would be much cooler if they would import the basic features of your Mii to make a custom character stylized for the game.  They could take hair color, height, etc of your Mii and use them to select similar attributes for a custom character.

This is what I'd assumed they'd be doing with Mii's from the beginning.

TalkBack / Re: Rock Band 2 To Be 'Much More Competitive' Than The First
« on: August 15, 2008, 10:20:48 AM »
Smart move on their part but I already have a Guitar Hero 3 guitar.  So World Tour wins by default unless Rock Band 2 is compatible with the GH guitar.  I'm not going to go to all the trouble to get two sets of fake instruments.  Unless they're compatible, it's one or the other.  I actually was more interested in Rock Band but MTV Games screwed up and Activision didn't.  I'm glad they're fixing the mistakes for Rock Band 2 but Activision earned Wii owners' business.

This.  The first non-xbox console to have RB+GH compatibility will win my money.  Nintendo needs to just force this to happen.  It's bad for Nintendo not to be compatible and it's bad for consumers.

Yeah this stuff backfires more than it actually stops piracy.  At some point mankind will reach the level of understanding where they realize that computers read and write data.

And yet all this could be prevented if they allowed for legitimate home brew through something like the xbox creator's club and a licensed flash card.

Call me crazy but I'm actually looking forward to this.  I think Red Steel needed a lot more time to make it right, and if they put in 1:1 sword controls and spend the time to make 2 good, it may be the game we all thought part 1 was going to be.

Yeah!  Finally!  This game has been screaming for a Wii and DS port.  Let's hope they don't goof up the game play or make "the adventures of the blue pikmin" or some nonsense.

vvv yeah.  no.

Performance issues are a concern, but if they pull it off this will be pretty cool.

Anyone else feel this is just trying to deliver what we all thought the Wii was going to do when it launched?  I remember feeling kind of bummed when I realized in Wii sports, it just kind of took over your swing for you in golf and baseball.

« on: July 12, 2008, 12:05:27 PM »
I'd like to see them get back to the titular metroids, honestly.  The final stage in the first Metroid was terrifying the first time you played it.  Metroids were nothing short of deadly.  In the Prime games, you shoot them a couple times and they explode.  It's become more "The Adventures of Samus and the Evil Space Pirates" more than "Metroid" anything.

If you played the last DS Sim City, it should be clear the system isn't powerful enough to run a halfway deep version of Sim City.  The Wii version might be good, but I'm afraid it'll be like Sim City Societies more than Sim City 4.

I was annoyed to find out that you are supposed to find ALL the anagrams possible, minus the words Nintendo might think are naughty.  It's not like Boggle where you find as many as you can in a time limit.  You literally have to sit there trying every combination of letters to find the last 2 or 3 anagrams.  Ugh. Not fun.

On the whole it's a decent enough title, but I think my wife will enjoy it more than I do.
