Title: Sonic the Hedgehog Being Adapted for Feature Film
Post by: Professor Clayton on June 10, 2014, 04:25:55 PM

Sony Pictures is helping to bring the blue blur to life in a hybrid live-action/CG movie.

Sony Pictures is working with Sega Sammy Group division Marza Animation Planet to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the big screen, according to a press release from Marza.

Sega's highly successful video game franchise is set to be adapted as a hybrid live-action/computer-animated movie, with a screenplay from Upright Citizens Brigade veterans Evan Susser and Van Robichaux in the works. Producer Neal Moritz, known for movies like the Fast and the Furious series and 21 Jump Street, is attached to the film, as is his company, Original Film.

According to Marza, the movie should "capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman."

No release date or official has been set for the movie.

I once heard that the guy who made Joust always wanted to do a movie. Sadly Atari faded away as a company and Midway got lost in the shuffle so that never happened. Even sadder is some how Sega still survives and this is what they spend their money on?

And so the Sonic Cycle begins anew.  :P:

And I know only someone as old & set in my ways could still care about this, but it would be nice if they changed the NA name of the villain back to "Dr. Robotnick", where it belongs.  Still, the benefit of a movie in this case is that the constraints of both CG & a 70-80 minute run time may actually force the studio to keep Sonic's ****ty friends out of the movie & focus on Sonic running really fast & being sarcastic, where he's most entertaining...

...or Sega could just dump a billion dollars into this movie to animate every unwanted Sonic friend, right down to Big the Cat, and the movie's a bloated mess just like the games.  It's Sega. Flipping a coin will give you a more accurate estimation than logic.

How do you feel about King Koopa changing to Bowser or Toadstool becoming peach then? Just curious because I hate those names and still use the ones I grew up with.

If this doesn't star Jaleel White, it can screw off.

Maybe they can work in the Sat AM theme song.

It's weird, but I never liked "King Koopa", but I do like "Bowser." I still have to force myself to call Princess Toadstool "Peach." I always thought Mario 64 had a good middle road on that issue, with the game's intro using both names.

*imagines Jaleel White standing by his phone in anticipation of the Casting Director's call, going"I'm WAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIITING!"*  :P:

I'd second the notion of changing the villain's name back to Robotnik. It just sounds better and is more threatening. Eggman sounds goofy and of little threat.

King Koopa/Bowser never bothered me because they were pretty interchangeable for a long time, with his name being Bowser in the games (even in SMB1, IIRC) and King Koopa in the cartoons and movie, though he had King of the Koopas as his title in the games.

The Peach/Toadstool thing still takes some effort, but since both names are used in M64, we can assume it's either her full name or title like with Bowser. Either way, Peach at least sounds more Princess like, so even if it were permanent, it'd be an improvement.

But, AFAIK, there's no official mixing of both Robotnik and Eggman as the same name for the character (or one being a title, one being a nickname, etc), and Eggman, again, is definitely not an improvement.

This will likely fit in the same vein as the Dragonball Evolution and Street Fighter movies from a few years back, so bad they simply don't get here.

So instead of the best elements of Sonic, they are doubling down on the worst?

What could possibly go wrong :faust:
