TalkBack / Re: Switch System Software 14.0 Now Available: Adds Folders
« on: March 21, 2022, 11:31:24 PM »
I don't care too much about the folders option, but if they gave me the ability to put the same game into multiple folders.

For example, I could have a Donkey Kong Folder that has the GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong, DSiWare Mario vs, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong '94, NES Donkey Kong Jr., DSiWare Game and Watch Donkey Kong Jr, and DSiWare Metronome.

Then, I could have each of these games in other folders - the two Mario vs. Donkey Kong games in a Mario Folder, the GBA game in a GBA Folder, the DSiWare titles in a DSiWare Folder, the GB game in a GB folder, the NES game in an NES Folder, the Game and Watch in a Game and Watch folder...  I'd spend so much time organizing my menu...

I can't believe that it's been 10 years since I went through a pretty serious period of browsing these forums. When I saw the implementation for the Switch's folder system, I was immediately brought back to this insanely prescient wish from all those years ago. Congrats for calling this, UncleBob!

I managed to have a pretty good time during Miiverse's final months:

My main fixation over this time I would call a victory. I played tons and tons of the 3DS version of Mario Vs Donkey Kong. I'm glad I didn't split my attention between it and the Wii U version because I was just barely able to almost 100% this version. I like these games a lot but it was a huge slog playing so much and reposting my levels every so often to try to gain traction on the latest and most popular boards to get some extra stars. I was able to buy all the ridiculously expensive stage pieces, and got a total of 822 Yeahs on my levels. I had less time than I expected on the final night so I wasn't able to amass and tip enough stars to get all the stamps but I am sitting at 69/72 (having tipped out 545 stars on top of the crazy amount I had to spend to buy things).

Me and my brother weren't able to beat Affordable Space Adventure in time but it's a great little game we wouldn't have played otherwise and I'm looking forward to continuing with it at some point.

I had fun playing around with Pushmo World for the first time and I was able to download all the official DLC and lots of "popular" fanmade content which will definitely be fun to tackle if I ever go deep into puzzle gaming on a console.

Just as I suspected, its now completely impossible to see what stamps I've collected in Mario Kart. Hopefully I don't mess up while using the checklist I made.

One of my biggest regrets is that I wasn't able to get some friends together to give the Miiverse stage in Smash the sendoff it truly deserved. I spent the night playing and tipping MvDK levels that stayed loaded even after the final shutdown. I didn't use Miiverse much for its intended purposes but I am really sad to see it go so soon.

Yeah I had included that link somewhere in the original post as well, but for many of the games Nintendo didn't specify what exactly would go missing. I feel like the "loss" of functionality for Star Fox Zero is a lot less severe than Deus Ex for example, but you wouldn't know that by just going by Nintendo's website - hence the thread. :)

Yoshi's Woolly World should be in the OP though, that was one of the first ones I added since it's a game I played a lot. There's several notable ones still missing though, like Pikmin 3, and for the Bayonetta games and Wonderful 101 I'm unsure how correct my info is here.

I swear I had looked over the thread at some point and not noticed the links or the Yoshi entry, my bad. Pikmin 3 has a camera picture that lets you post pictures to Miiverse so that's at least some of the disappearing content.

Weird that Mario Kart 8 doesn't let you see your stamps! I've never played it, so didn't know that. Mario 3D World has a screen that looks like a stickersheet which comes up everytime you find a new stamp, shame that's not in Kart.

Yeah I know for sure that 3D World and NES Remix Pack let you see the unlockable stamps without using Miiverse. Mario Maker doesn't let you see them either but at least those are all unlocked from the start and aren't used for achievements. I don't have any other games with stamps to know for sure though.

http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27325/~/list-of-games%2Ffeatures-affected-by-the-miiverse-discontinuation

Nintendo actually posted this list of games that will be losing features (including some notable ones that were missing from this thread like Wooly World).

This actually highlights a real issue with Mario Kart, I already found it annoying that there was no good way to see your collected stamps (which Nintendo pushed as achievements in a lot of games this gen) without going into the Miiverse post interface. As far as I can tell, it will actually be impossible to tell which of them you're missing once Miiverse closes. At least most (all?) of the other games with stamps let you see them in separate collection screens of some sort.

Love these lists of disappearing content! Always feels weird to be at the end of an era even if I never really committed 100% to Miiverse...

At least we aren't losing as many features as we do during an online connection shutdown (which you know is probably around the corner too)

You can try contacting Nintendo through email or a phone call and see if they'll give you a PIN for the game (might need some proof of purchase), who knows, maybe they'll give you one.

Has anybody tried doing this? I recently bought a copy of Game&Wario that I was assured was new but didn't have a Club Nintendo code.

I got Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2, 3, and 4 last year during the Great Nintendo Online Shutdown and, while I haven't gotten around to actually beating any of them, I did find that some of the mechanics had in fact changed quite a bit between 3 and 4. 4, notably, seemed almost obsessed with the new girder drawing system instead of most of the more varied mechanics from 2 and 3 (or maybe I'm remembering wrong/didn't play enough). 4 also made boss battles out of the actual gameplay which was pretty cool.

I remember reading that in previous Smash games replays were coded as a list of the players actions with everything else acting around it as it would have originally. Patches that change the way moves work or the way AI reacts could therefore completely change the replay.

I got Platinum last year but wasn't subscribed to the emails until I heard about this. The website isn't working super well with all the traffic they must be getting but I think I turned on email notifications around 10 (EST) anybody know if these were still being sent out then/were likely to be sent out to late adopters of the newsletter?

You could always try that, I don't really know enough about the technical aspects of it to know if it will work. I've been lucky enough to know some people that don't have protection on their Wi-Fi that I can use when I need to download something like that.

My DS games refuse to connect to the internet. I've been trying to download the weekly puzzles for Professor Layton and have tried to do so on 3 different internet Wi-Fi connections and it has failed to do so all 3 times. I even popped the game into my 3DS to see if that would make a difference but it doesn't. Anyone else with issues?
The original DS (and most games made for it, even if they're being played on a 3DS) can't be used on connections that are protected by WPA security features. I think that in the last few years its become increasingly likely that your connection would use those instead of WEP, which the old DS could connect to.

A lot of theses games have been disappointingly hard to find around these parts

I don't bite on many VC games I already own, but if I did I guess I would probably go with Blue like I first did so many years ago. Although I do seem to remember Blue having the best exclusives overall, I'll be the first in this thread to give honourable mention to something exclusive to White. I remember coming up with a key strategy for collecting boss chips using the Balance chip available only through White's multiplayer (of course that will probably be stripped out anyway :P).

Glad to see something like this, I mentioned in another thread that I was hoping we could get this list written.

A few questions/comments:

The extra missions in both Pokémon Ranger games were limited-time offers and were finished a while ago. This may also be the case for most/all of the content from Conquest. I have nothing against mentioning it for people who see the games in the list of games losing features and wonder what they're missing out on but then you might have to mention events from the main Pokémon games or even the Guitar Hero DLC which have also been discontinued. If nothing else, I'm sure posterity would appreciate as complete a list of Wii/DS DLC.

Also, I think there was stuff you could unlock in Final Fantasy III by sending messages to other players. Is that not included because (I think) you can also get it through local wireless? Because that might be harder for people to organise.

Related to that, I thought I heard that the Dragon Quest stuff could also be unlocked through local interaction. Worth noting?

« on: April 04, 2014, 08:51:44 PM »
You know, having seen the list of affected games, I still find myself worrying if I'm missing out on any gems. I'd love to see a (community written?) list of games with stuff like the exact Wi-Fi features of the game, some workarounds to accessing content without them (like the ability to conect locally to unlock things often thought of as "Wi-Fi only"), whether the online features are actually good, whether the game is good without them, etc.

While I was looking into getting a few songs for Guitar Hero before the service shut down.
Thanks Mop, but that's what got me looking into it in the first place. I was able to find my GH5 and get the songs I wanted onto the SD card through that game. I was really just curious about why it worked with 5 and not WT.

Ah OK, if I'm understanding that first link correctly, World Tour doesn't work with anything past 2 gigs? That would explain a lot. Good thing I found 5 then :D. Thanks for finding those, Phil.

Nintendo Gaming / Guitar Hero World Tour SD cards
« on: April 01, 2014, 01:10:29 AM »
While I was looking into getting a few songs for Guitar Hero before the service shut down, I noticed that a few of my SD cards weren't registering with GH:WT. It would tell me that "The device inserted in the SD Card Slot cannot be used". I've been able to properly load channels off them and they all worked fine with other games (including my copy of GH5 which I later found). I even tried formatting them several times. Really curious if anyone knows why all this would happen.

While I was trying to fix it earlier I somehow ended up with a couple of slightly different copies of the files so I had a few scares when those didn't work even after the reformatting.

However, I finally got it to work! Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'll have to be more careful next time I mess around with the card (lol that probably won't be for another couple of years if ever).

P.S. There is an absolutely hilarious amount of wrapped icons on my home menu.

Does that involve reformatting it into something 3DS specific or would any hit I get off googling "Reformat SD card" be able to help me do that?

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS SD card corruption
« on: March 25, 2014, 08:00:39 PM »
I was wanting to use my 3DS SD card for other things so I cut and pasted everything from it onto my computer. After I brought everything back on the card, and put it back in the DS it gave me some sort of message about the data being corrupted. Now, most of the home screen icons tell me that I need to redownload the from the eshop, including Animal Crossing and Streetpass Mii Plaza :(.
I don't remember anything seeming wrong during the process but I might not be remembering it properly. Anyone know if there's any remote chance of me fixing my stuff ? Or have any insight on what I could have done wrong so I can avoid making the same mistake?
Any insight would be great, thanks guys.

While I'm bumping this, I should probably also ask if the DLC puzzles are worth it and if you need to have beaten the games or anything to start downloading them.

Since hearing this news, I've been trying to figure out if there are any games I should be getting to take full advantage of the end of the service.
One question I keep coming back to is Layton. I rented and somewhat enjoyed the first one when it was current and always thought about returning to the series at some point. I remember there being DLC puzzles and I'm wondering if I could download them all if I try to find the first four(?) games for decent prices then play all of them at a later time.

I'm pretty sure this happened to me once after playing a lot of Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
