For it's one, two, six hundred million from the old ball team

Nintendo released their financial results at the close of the Japanese business day earlier today, and some significant events led to a operating loss in the quarter.

The key financial indicators, with US conversions at current market rates:

  • Operating loss: 5.947bn yen ($57.1m)
  • Net profit/loss (including currency fluctuations): 38.299bn profit ($367.7m)
  • Hardware sales: 2.71m 3DS systems, 560,000 Wii U so far this fiscal year
  • Software sales: 19.23m 3DS, 8.3m Wii U
  • Related entity revenue (mostly Pokémon Go revenue): 12bn yen ($115m)
  • Download sales (year to date): 14.7bn yen ($141m)
  • Extraordinary income from sale of 45% of the Seattle Mariners: 62.7bn yen ($602m)

Notably, Nintendo has lowered forecasts for sales by 30m yen, operating income by 15m yen, and net income (with currency) of 35m yen.

Strong sales performers in the quarter included Kirby Planet Robobot selling over a million copies, Pokémon XY reaching 15.64 million combined to pass Pokémon Black and White, and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire passing Heart Gold/Soul Silver with 13.18m units sold. Mario Kart 8 has also crossed the 8 million mark on Wii U.

The release schedule features no Switch information, but Devilish Brain Training is still listed for Europe and Project Giant Robot for all territories. Miitopia also lists a 2016 release date for Japan.

Given that the forecast was 800k for the year I'm actually impressed they sold 70% of their forecast before the holidays, without a price cut.

And why exactly are people suppose to be buying the thing this year?  There hasn't been a price cut and nothing they've released for it is going to appeal to anyone that hasn't bought the system yet.  The fact they're only shipping 800k the entire fiscal year, which includes the holiday season and early 2017 shows Nintendo knows the thing is dead.  Those sales aren't any skin of their back since they're already focusing all efforts on the Switch.

So we can already calculate Wii U total lifetime sales. If they stopped manufacturing and sales end once they run out, that means there won't be more to sell after March right? So it beat Dreamcast, are there any other consoles that did better than Dreamcast it passed? I know it won't come close to Game Cube now. That is sad if you think about it, selling half of what their last worst selling home console sold.
I wonder how it compares to PC Engine.

Yeah, it makes me wonder how many they have left for the holiday season and if they decided to produce any more than the estimate. Though, I guess they don't necessarily want people to buy a Wii U now as it would be more beneficial for those people to wait and buy the NSwitch.

Since the Switch is not backwards compatible there actually is value in buying a Wii U still.  Though I think those on the fence would need a discounted price to do so.

I was talking in terms of Nintendo, so Nintendo would prefer people buy the NSwitch over a Wii U. If they have to choose that is, I'm sure Nintendo would prefer people buy both! ;)

I would wager that next year they'll forecast 200k and that will be the last of it. Maybe then they'll cut the price.
